Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage Walkthrough [Guide]

It’s time to take out your hammers and sharpen your swords with Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage from Rovio, the same team that gave you the very popular Angry Birds series of games to mobile and PC. In Icebreaker, players will portray the role of a young apprentice cutting master tasked with freeing his Viking brothers from many traps, and there are also a lot of dangers amiss for your Viking brethren. Each stage is set as a difficult puzzle, where oftentimes there is only one solution in solving the problem. It will take a lot of skill and foresight to move forward in the game, and this guide will help you in getting through most of the problems that you will face.

Gameplay
Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage is a physics based puzzle game much akin to the popular game Cut the Rope. Players must swipe at objects that can be cut such as ice blocks and ropes in order to guide Vikings towards any of the one or two longboats. If Vikings are enclosed in ice and it reaches the boat, then your character will then break the Viking free. However, large sized blocks cannot be smashed, so players must cut them up further so that they can be broken apart.

Players must be able to use the environment to their advantage, as some blocks can slide across the ground, and objects such as those attached to a pivot can knock objects as well as Vikings towards a different location. However, caution must be taken as there are areas that Vikings must not touch, such as spikes or trolls.

Coins
Coins are objects that can be collected within the game. There are a specified amount of coins contained within each level, and it is desired that players collect as much as possible as a certain quantity is required in order to unlock further stages. In order to collect coins, players must have Vikings touch them, or have treasure chests that contain even more coins get into the boat where the player will open them.

Powerups
There are also powerups that players can use in order to gain a definite advantage especially in more difficult puzzles. Although each level can be solved even without powerups, purchasing them will make clearing the level much easier. Powerups include the ability to move Vikings from one place to another, attracting coins and chests towards Vikings, and speeding up slide motions by tilting your device. Use powerups wisely, however, as these would require in-app purchases to access.

Tips and Tricks
Look for items with shapes that complement each other. This might mean that they can fit together, and you must try to find ways to get one piece towards the other. This is often used to slide blocks, Vikings, or other items towards the intended destination. Also, look for items with pivots on them, as they are almost always used towards solving the puzzle.

Players can knock trolls off screen, or they can also be led towards the longboat where your character would smash them. This will remove the danger that they present from play. You can also use ice to cover up spikes, and players will not have to worry about blocks smashing to bits when they fall as this will not happen.

Some puzzles will require players to cut larger pieces of blocks, and they can then cut smaller pieces to make them move towards a different position. Likewise, players can also use momentum by knocking on objects tied to ropes, and they can then cut on the rope so that the object in question can drop to the desired location. Timing is essential during these instances, and don’t be afraid to experiment as you can replay a level an infinite number of times.

Some objects, like chains, cannot be cut. With this, look towards cutting on the ice surrounding the chain to make it drop, or look towards a solution where the chain can knock on other objects, allowing them to change trajectory. Always analyze on how objects within the puzzle would interact with each other, and it would be much better to look around and break the puzzle into smaller pieces, and then try out your plan in order to see if it would work.

Lastly, make sure that you replay levels where you have not yet acquired all coins. Coins are required in order to unlock other levels, so make sure that you are able to get everything before you proceed, or at least come back to them if you still see yourself lacking in coins. Powerups are not a recommended purchase, as all stages can be cleared and all coins can be collected without using them, but if you have cash to spare and if you are stuck in a particular stage, then by all means, do not hesitate to spend on powerups to give you that much needed assist.
