You won’t have to spend a long time in Destiny before you pick up a new weapon, only to find that it has something special about it, a Weapon Mod that can make one of a number of interesting stat and performance changes to your gun.
The descriptions that you’re given for Weapon Mods in game are typically pretty vague, and if you’re sat there with two identical weapons, but each with a different Mod attached, it can be a little difficult to figure out which one will serve you best, either in the PvP Crucible area or when you’re taking on the weekly challenge somewhere in the Destiny Universe.
So what are these Weapon Mods, what do they mean, and which should you go with for your Guardian?
Accelerated Coils (Fusion Rifle only)
+50 Charge Time
Gives you a huge boost to Charge Time, meaning that you can get your shots off much faster when using a Fusion Rifle. Expect this one to prove more than useful in the Crucible, where how fast you can get a shot off being the difference between winning and losing a match.
Armor Piercing Rounds
Causes rounds to penetrate targets
Makes your bullets punch right through enemies, meaning that if you’re taking on a clustered group of enemies, say in a narrow hallway, you’ll be able to take all of them down at once! Not so handy in PvP, where you’re less likely to run into conveniently lined up enemies.
Cascade
Sets reload speed to 150% of base
Cascade only kicks in after getting a melee kill, after which you’ll reload your gun much faster. Bound to be very useful up against the likes of the Hive, where you’ll frequently find yourself in close quarters without much time to reload.
Clown Cartridge
Every reload has a 25% chance of a 20% magazine bonus
Clown Cartridge will only show up on guns with a small magazine to begin with, but will allow you to occasionally get a boost to your magazine size on reload, which should let you get a few extra shots off. Again, this could be the difference between life and death, if you’re lucky enough that is!
Cluster Bomb (Rocket Launcher only)
Rocket detonation spawns cluster bombs
Giving your rockets a massive boost to the explosive power of each shot, upon impact your rocket releases four cluster bomblets that deal 50 damage each to those caught up in the blast. Make use of this in the Crucible and you’ll truly lock down an area.
Shot Package (Shotgun only)
Narrows pellet spread while in ADS
Each shot you take with Shot Package applied will have a reduced spread radius, concentrating damage to a smaller area. If you’re an accurate shot this pretty much guarantees you a one-shot kill in PvP, but if you’re just a little bit off target you’ll be out of luck.
Counterbalance
Stabilizes recoil
Gives a 9% boost to a weapons stability stat, reducing recoil after a shot. When on a machinegun it’s sure to be a deadly combination.
Note: On Legendary-quality weapons this will only appear on machineguns.
Crowd Control
Bonus damage for a short time after a kill
For three seconds after you get a kill, your damage will receive a 15% damage bonus. This won’t do a lot of good in 1v1 situations, but when you’re trying to clear out some cover this could start a chain of multi-kills that let you capture an area with dominance.
Custom Optics
+0.5x zoom
Only available on scout and sniper rifles at Legendary quality, this mod will give you that little bit extra zoom.
Make sure to combine this with your choice of scope in order to get just the right level of zoom that you were looking for, or quite possibly the longest-range weapon in the game!
Damage Types
Arc, Kinetic, Solar, Void
You’ll notice this as the little emblem that sometimes appears on a weapons info pop-up.
Doesn’t matter at all in PvP, but against other enemies using an element against an enemy shield of the same type will inflict bonus damage. Choose the wrong element on Mythic difficulty though, and you’ll get a 50% penalty to damage dealt, so make sure your using the right element for the mission!
Shoot to Loot
Shoot ammo to pick it up
This one is pretty fun, and if you’re caught behind cover and running low on ammo can be a lifesaver, allowing you to pick up an ammo cache by shooting it with your weapon. You’re unlikely to find a ton of use for it in PvP, aside from the occasional long-range camp, but stealing a heavy ammo pickup from the enemy team using this always feels good!
Double Down
Boosts ammo available when you spawn
Letting you spawn with just a little bit more ammo to spare, Double Down can be hugely useful when playing on higher difficulties. And if you’re playing on PvP this can let you stick to your preferred weapon for a few extra kills when you’re on a hot streak.
Enhanced Battery
+100 Magazine, -30 Reload
Gives you the maximum possible magazine size on any Fusion Rifle, although that’s at the price of your reload speed, which takes a massive hit. If you’re the type that likes to get in up close and fire off a bunch of shots before retreating to cover, then this is for you.
