What’s new in FIFA 16?

Women’s teams

For the first time in any footballing game, you play as women! Following the success (well compared the men’s England team anyway) of the Lionesses in the women’s world cup in Canada, FIFA 16 finally gives players the ability to play as 12 national teams. You can use the teams in quick match and custom tournament mode. You can’t play against the fellas with them though!

The 12 teams are:

Germany

USA

France

Sweden

England

Brazil

Canada
Australia

Spain
China
Italy

Mexico

Defence Overhaul

In FIFA 16 your defence team will act more as a unit, which means that if you’re playing as a defender you have more freedom to move around the pitch – it doesn’t have to be you challenging every oncoming striker. There are also a whole host of changes to movement mechanics that mean that defenders are able to track players and nullify the threat from oncoming attacks. The other big change to defending techniques in new tackling. In FIFA 16 you can you control the length of your slide tackle to make sure you always keep up with the action, and you can now fake tackle to add a whole new level of skill to play.

Midfield Madness

In FIFA 16 the midfield is the centre and focus of the action. There’s new features around the midfield, with the AI players now much more adept at closing down the areas which attacking players are most likely to head towards. And if you’re the one pressing the attack then you’ll find that your teammates will look for open field to make passes. You can also make low passes even more deadly in the midfield in the new game, with new powerful “ground passes” so you can get the ball in quick to people even further into the enemy territory – Don’t get offside though!

Attacking Arsenal

The biggest new attacking element is the new “no touch dribbling” feature, which will allow players to make much more sophisticated moves when they have the ball, allowing them to fake out their opponents with fake moves and little taps, which will generally allow the attacking players to be much more agile. Crossing the ball into the box has also received some touch-ups, with successful crosses finding that key players with much more accuracy than before. The final feature is new shooting moves – there’s now a bigger variety so you can use different parts of the player’s feet to place the ball just where you want it in the net behind the goalie!
