Overview
The Dunwall City Trials is a set of missions separate from the campaign. Head to the main menu and select missions. You can select the DLC missions from here.
The Dunwall City Trials consist of ten different challenges based on four different challenge types. The four different types of challenges are mobility, stealth, action, and puzzle.
Each time you complete a challenge you will receive a score and a rating up to three stars. There are leaderboards in which you can compare your performances with other players.
For each star earned in a challenge you will unlock artwork from the gallery. Furthermore, some challenges contain an expert mode which can be unlocked by receiving at least two stars on that challenge.
It is also important to note that these challenges ARE skill based. Some of them may take multiple attempts to get just right and achieve a high score. The challenges require much trial and error.
If at any point during a challenge you forget how to do something, such as a Drop Assassination, you can refer to the tutorial screen in the pause menu.
When you are ready to start, go to the DLC main menu and go to the Challenge Selection screen. Enter one of the trials.
Mystery Foe
Mystery Foe is a stealth challenge that requires you to collect clues and execute a mystery target in the building. It is recommended to move through the challenge undetected. Once you execute the proper target, the challenge will be completed. However, the challenge will end if you die, if the target escapes, or if you execute an innocent person. It is acceptable to render someone unconscious, but it will not help your points and it will leave a body that is likely to be discovered. A discovered body may cause your target to flee.
In this challenge, you can get a lucky kill and execute the target without knowing who it is, but it is recommended to collect all of the clues first. When you are ready, enter the building and find a way to hide. You can hide on chandeliers and behind curtains. You can also use rat holes and attic trapdoors to bypass enemies easily and enter different rooms. Use rat holes by using your possession ability to possess a rat and move through it.
Your abilities are very important in this mission. Use your blink ability to teleport to hiding places so you can move around without being spotted. Find a good hiding spot, then take a moment to locate all of the clues which will be marked on your hud. Find the first clue and grab it without being seen. You can use your abilities to make this easier by doing things such as stopping time.
When you acquire the first clue, you will notice a notification pop up at the top right of your screen. Almost like a good game of ‘Guess Who,’ a description of the person will be given to you to help you narrow down who your target is. You should be given a clue similar to ‘Your target wears blue clothes’ or ‘Your target is not wearing a hat.’
If at any point you think you know who your target is, you can take a risk and execute them. However, to be sure you are not murdering an innocent person, you should find all of the clues first.
Make your way around the building until you have collected all four of the clues. While doing this, you should grab potions to restore your abilities. When your abilities run low, it is more difficult to be stealthy.
Each clue you find will narrow down who your target may be. When you find the fourth and final clue, a picture of your target will appear on the top right of your hud. Search the building for someone meeting the description you have. Each time you play the challenge the target will be different. Once you find the target, execute them to complete the challenge.
Burglar
Burglar is a stealth challenge. You must sneak into the mansion to steal six different clockwork eggs. You must also collect as many valuables as possible. To get the most points in this challenge, you should go through the entire thing without being spotted. Leave no trace of ever being there.
It is also worth pointing out that there are many secrets and hidden places in the mansion. While sneaking around, you should try to interact with the environment to uncover some of them.
You will start out on a platform that leads to the front gate. At the end of the challenge, you will need to make your way back to this platform. For now, you will need to infiltrate the mansion. You can either sneak through the back door or the front door.
If you are spotted three times during the mission, you will lose. Enter the mansion undetected and start hoarding valuables. Check your hud for waypoints to eggs you need to collect. Head towards one of the waypoints and collect valuables along the way.
Use your dark vision to see through walls. This will allow you to view the line of sight of people in the mansion. Move around the people while you make your way towards the eggs and valuables. You can also use dark vision to easily find valuable items in the mansion, whether they be out in the open or locked in a container.
While you are moving around enemies, try not to render them unconscious or kill them unless absolutely necessary. Part of leaving no trace is not leaving any bodies in the mansion. You can use your powers to easily move around enemies. Remember to utilize your ability to see through walls, teleport, and stop time.
Continue to collect the clockwork eggs. If you are having trouble finding eggs, enable dark vision and move to different levels of the house. You will come across waypoints to more eggs. Soon enough, you should have six eggs. You should also shoot for a goal of 3500 valuables.
When you are done your burglary, you will need to make your way back to your entry point. Exit the mansion without being spotted and head to the platform where you started.
Remember, these challenges are meant to be played more than once. Replay the mission until you have mastered moving around the mansion. Once you are able to move around without being spotted, you should be able to easily burglarize the house and obtain a high score.
Back Alley Brawl
Back Alley Brawl is an action challenge. It is based off of typical wave-based survival gametypes. You must fight through waves of enemies that will grown increasingly more difficult as the challenge goes on.
You do not have infinite ammo or powers in this challenge, which means you need to collect them. You can collect Runes throughout the challenge to obtain new powers such as Devouring Swarm. Between some rounds, there is a golden merchant who will appear. You can hit him or kill him to collect more ammo, potions, or even gear upgrades.
You will start out with default weapons and powers. Use them to defeat the enemies in the first wave. You can also find a tank of Whale Oil which is marked with a green light. You can use the tank to deal explosive damage to enemies by throwing it at them.
Kill the enemies in each wave to rack up points. Try to be quick about killing the enemies because they will fight each other. If an enemy kills another enemy in the wave, you will lose out on points. Try to steal as many kills as possible.
You can also view how many enemies are alive by checking the amount of skulls at the top of the hud. Your kill count and time can be viewed at the top right.
You can get point bonuses by getting kill multipliers or special kills such as fatalities and novelty kills. The rounds should be similar to each other with the exception of more difficult enemies, so find a strategy that works for you.
Continue to rack up kills and collect upgrades until it becomes too difficult for you. Like any wave-based survival gametype, the more you play it the better you will become. Once you die and the challenge ends, play it again to try to beat your high score.
Assassin’s Run
Assassin’s Run is an action challenge. The objective is to make your way through the level while shooting your targets with a crossbow. You will need to avoid neutralizing civilians and kill your enemies as fast as possible. The quicker you complete the challenge, the more points you will receive.
You will start out at the entrance to the first room. You will already have your crossbow equipped, suited with infinite ammo. Even though you have infinite ammo, you will receive more points for making each shot accurate.
Head through the start door and kill the first enemy with the crossbow. There will be a total of three enemies in this room, as indicated by the skulls at the top of the screen. Find the next two enemies and kill them.
The door to the next room will open once all the enemies in the room are dead. If an enemy in the room is still alive, the door will not open. You can find each door by looking for the red light above them. If the red light is off, the door is open. If it is lit, the door is still locked.
Proceed into the next room containing three more enemies. Kill them, but avoid the civilian in the white clothes wearing a mask. When the final enemy is dead, the door directly ahead of you will open. Head into the next room.
Wait at the start of the room and keep an eye on the opening on the other side. Soon, a wave of enemies will rush you. In the midst of the enemies there is a civilian you must avoid. Kill each enemy with an accurate shot before they reach you. For better accuracy, zoom in with the crossbow.
Once the room is clear of enemies, turn to the right of the room and head up the wooden ramp through the doorway. Three doors will open. The left door contains an enemy, the middle a civilian, and the right contains another enemy. Kill the two enemies before they reach you.
Do not head through any doors, but instead take notice to the upper part of the wall to the left of the entrance. There will be a small platform and another doorway. You can either use blink to reach the door, or climb up the objects along the wall.
In the next room, windows will open. The next two enemies must be killed at long range. The first one is holding a hostage, so you must zoom in with your crossbow for accuracy. Shoot him in the head, then look at the stairway to his right. One more enemy will be walking up the stairway. Kill him and proceed into the next room.
The next room only contains two enemies. Quickly shoot them and head into the next doorway. This will be the final room. There will be enemies on the second level of the room. Look up and kill them. It is very likely that the enemies will teleport to the ground floor, so be aware.
Once you kill the last three enemies in this room, a new glowing white doorway will open. Head into the white room to end the challenge. Wait for your score, and either continue or try the challenge again.
Oil Drop
This action challenge is simple, but requires a good amount of accuracy and speed. The objective is to shoot as many falling Whale Oil Tanks as possible with your pistol containing infinite ammo.
You score points by shooting each Whale Oil Tank. You can acquire point bonuses by doing other feats such as having good accuracy, not missing any tanks in a round, or destroying multiple tanks at once.
Before you start the challenge, you should know that there are different types of tanks that will be thrown at you, each having a different color. Purple tanks explode into a cloud of smoke, pink tanks restore a portion of your health, gold tanks slow down time for two seconds, and green tanks enable dark vision for fifteen seconds.
When you start the challenge, you will find yourself in a small area below a set of train tracks. The train will start throwing tanks through the air at you. While they are falling, use your equipped pistol to shoot them out of the air.
Beware of the tank explosions that may harm you if you let the tank hit the ground, or if you wait too long to shoot it. If you lose too much health, you can shoot a pink tank to restore some of it. Once the first round is over, a bonus round will activate. The train will throw multiple tanks at you at once. Once the bonus round is over, the second round will start.
Each round is increasingly difficult. In the second round, two more trains will arrive and start throwing oil tanks at you. Continue to shoot the tanks out of the air with your pistol. Even though you will have to react very quickly, try to use the colored tanks to your advantage.
Once you die, the challenge will end. Continue to the next challenge or retry the challenge until you obtain the score that you want.
Bend Time Massacre
Bend Time Massacre is a puzzle challenge. You will need to break the glass to start the Bend Time. Once Bend Time is activated, you will be given a few seconds to execute as many people as you can. This challenge is round-based. Each new round gives you different situations and resources.
Once Round 1 starts, you will have ten seconds to kill three enemies. Take a moment to find the enemies and think of a strategy. You can use your Dark Vision to spot enemies. When you are ready, break the glass and start massacring. When the time is up, the round will end.
At the end of each round you will see the possible amount of kills, the goal amount of kills, and the amount of kills you had. You will also have the option to continue onto the bonus round. Bonus rounds will give you a specific challenge to complete. If you pass, you will be rewarded a score increase.
Each round is more difficult than the last. In the second round, you will have to kill five enemies within ten seconds. Remember to fully utilize all of your weapons. Assassinate anyone you can. Try to get headshots with the crossbow and the pistol, and use grenades and mines on large groups of people. Even try to use the glass to your advantage. Try to activate Bend Time when many enemies are grouped together.
If you fail one of the rounds, don’t fret. You do not have to restart the challenge. There is no way to fail this challenge. If you don’t kill the goal amount of people during a round, it will simply restart allowing you to try again. This allows you to build strategies for each round.
On the other hand, bonus rounds can be failed. You only get one try, and if you fail, they do not restart. They are purely for bonus points. If you fail a bonus round, you will receive no points and you will advance to the next round. Guides bonus rounds are available below.
The third round gives you fourteen seconds to kill seven enemies. Remember to use explosions on large groups of people. You should also use the environment to your advantage. Look for things such as Whale Oil Tanks which can be used to kill enemies. Round four requires you to kill ten enemies in fourteen seconds. Do this the same way you did the previous round
Round five requires you to kill seven enemies in sixteen seconds. This round contains two different rooms. Use an explosive on the people to the right, then run to the left room and kill as many people as possible.
Round six requires you to kill fifteen enemies in 20 seconds. Scope out the room using Dark Vision and build a strategy. To the left of the start there is an oil tank that can be used. Locate the different rooms in the area and decide where to use your explosives. Run around with your knife to kill any stragglers.
Each time you play the challenge, the bonus rounds may be in a different order. The guides for each round are below.
The first bonus round will challenge you to kill the Elite and save the Art Dealer. Break the glass and use your possession on the Elite. Move him in front of the bullet’s path. Next, possess the Art Dealer and move him to safety. The bonus round will be completed.
The second bonus round requires you to kill three nobles while leaving the guards unharmed. The three nobles are grouped together in the center of the room and the guards are walking around. You only have two seconds to do this. Wait until the guards are far away from the nobles, then break the glass. Use a mine to kill the nobles in an explosion.
The third bonus round challenges you to hit the Art Dealer with four crossbow bolts. Each bolt should shatter a pane of glass. There are windows surrounding the entire room. From outside the room, fire a crossbow bolt at the Art Dealer. Travel around the building and fire a bolt through each window at the dealer. Make sure one of the bolts hits him in the head so he will die.
The fourth bonus round requires you to kill all three Pendleton Brothers within 40 seconds. You must not allow the guards to see their bodies or watch them die. Break the glass and kill the brothers. Hit your projectile to make it move while time is stopped or simply use your knife. Once the brothers are dead, carry them out of site before the time runs out.
The fifth bonus round requires you to kill Overseer Campbell with the Whale Oil Tank within 25 seconds. The battery will be ignited as soon as you break the glass. Break the glass, then run over and break another glass panel near Overseer Campbell. Quickly grab the tank and run towards Campbell. Throw the oil tank at him.
The sixth bonus round requires you to save all 20 enemies from the ignited Whale Oil Tanks within 20 seconds. Use Dark Vision to locate all three tanks. Grab the tanks and throw them off of the balcony before time runs out. Be sure not to hit anything with the tanks so they do not explode.
Kill Chain
Kill Chain is another puzzle challenge. You must pass each round by killing an increasing number of enemies in a chain. To continue the chain, you must kill each enemy within four seconds of each other. In this challenge, planning and executing a plan is vital.
Kill each enemy to score points. The faster you do it, the more points you will receive. If you fail a round, you can simply restart it and try again. This leaves a window for trial and error. Building a strategy is easy when you can try the round over again.
You cannot restart bonus rounds. You only have one try to get them right. I will write a guide for bonus rounds below.
Remember to utilize each of your weapons and powers. You can even use the environment to your advantage. For example, you can kill people using Street Speakers. Be sure to use your Bend Time power. It can be used to pause the chain countdown. Aim for headshots using your crossbow and pistol, and hit large groups of enemies with your explosives. Kill any stragglers with your knife.
Before each round, take a minute to locate each enemy. Decide how you want to kill each one, and in what order. Take notice of the environment and use things such as falling street speakers and oil tanks. Use possession to group enemies together before each round, and easily take them out with explosives.
Repeat the process and build strategies for each round in this challenge. Remember, you can restart the round as many times as you have to. Practice makes perfect. Once you complete all six rounds or are happy with your score, exit the challenge.
Bonfires
Bonfires is a mobility challenge. The objective is to touch as many beams of red light as you can before the time runs out. Each of the red lights appears completely randomly each time you play the challenge.
You will have a set amount of time to collect as many beams as possible, though the countdown will be extended each time you touch a beam. Each beam will give you points, and you can get bonuses by reaching a beam very quickly or by doing difficult jumps.
Before you start, it is important to know that your mana refills quickly. You also do not take any fall damage during this challenge. You may have to do this challenge multiple times to master the jumps in the area.
Once the challenge starts, find the first red beam and use your blink and agility to get there as quickly as possible. Your blink and agility powers should be the only powers you use during this challenge.
During your first run through of this challenge, you should try to memorize where each building is on the map and take notice of where the red beams can spawn. Remember that you do not take fall damage and you can rapidly use your powers. Also, if you fall off of the map you will respawn at the location of the previous beam.
Some routes may be more difficult than others. Since each beam of light is randomly spawned, there are many different paths that you may have to take. Play the challenge until you have mastered the paths. Once you have become familiar with the different jumps and paths, you should have no problem obtaining a score you are happy with. Remember, practice makes perfect when it comes to jumps.
Train Runner
Train Runner is a mobility challenge. The goal is simple enough, you have to reach the finish line as fast as possible. During this challenge, you will be racing a train.
Use your Blink and Agility powers to rush through the challenge as fast as possible. You will start out with full mana, but it will run out as your use your powers.
The faster you reach the finish line, the higher your score will be. You will also receive bonus points for your remaining health and mana. Start the challenge and wait for the countdown.
There are many different paths you can take from the start. Any path can work, but some are faster than others. Finding new paths can cut down on your final time. The path I will explain will allow you to beat the train to the finish, but requires much practice.
Teleport to the top of the first platform and run forward. Find the purple light and teleport to that platform. Move around to your left and blink over the gap. Be careful not to fall into the void. Once you fall into the void, you will have to restart the challenge.
Teleport across the gaps until you reach another stairway next to a couple of buildings. Run to the top of the stairway and climb on top of the gate.
As you reach the top of the gate, the train will start to pass. This part may be extremely tricky, but use your blink to teleport to the top of the train. You can only make this jump from on top of the gate.
Run to the front of the moving train. As you approach the opening metal doors, jump forward and teleport towards the end of the tracks. Do not get hit by the train. Run forward, duck under the barriers and cross the finish line.
Like all of the challenges, this requires practice. Experiment with the map and find the path that works for you. Retry the challenge until you obtain a score you are happy with.
Kill Cascade
Kill Cascade is a mobility mission. You must perform Drop Assassinations on enemies as you make your way to the finish. To perform a drop assassination, you must attack while you are above the enemy, before you hit the ground. Remember, if you forget how to do something you can refer to the in-game tutorial screen.
Each enemy along the path is marked with a beam of light. You must jump to each enemy and perform a drop assassination. You can choose not to perform an assassination, but your progress will not be saved. If you fall into the void, you will respawn at the location of your last drop assassination.
You can score more points by reaching the end faster, and by falling for a longer distance before performing a drop assassination.
Each enemy along the path marked with a beam of light is in a different color. The colors are clues as to how to assassinate them. Enemies marked with a green light can be assassinated by simply sprinting and falling to reach them. Enemies marked with a yellow light require sprint and an agility jump to reach them. Enemies marked with a red light require sprint, an agility jump, and a blink to reach the target.
If you want to increase your score, you may have to deviate from the designated path. Traveling off of the path allows you to reach the end faster, but falling into the void will set you back significantly further.
For example, one of the quickest ways to complete the challenge is to turn left at the first enemy. Blink directly to the second enemy and perform a drop assassination. Jump over the third enemy to the top platform. Directly ahead of you there should be a floating boat. Jump on top of it.
From the boat, jump towards the red beam and perform a drop assassination. Jump to the rocks on the right of the path. Take notice of the building to your left. Get to the top of it, and then use your agility and blink to reach the final beam of light. Drop down all the way to the final target and perform an assassination.
Like any mobility challenge, you should retry the level until you are comfortable with it. If the above path doesn’t work for you, experiment and find something that does. Once you practice your jumps and assassinations, you should have no problem completing the challenge with a high score.
