Bananas high up on the trees, pleasantly placed tendrils hanging nearby. What would a good monkey do? Of course, take the jump and swing towards the bananas! That is what Benji, in Benji Bananas Adventures is set out to do and you’ve got to help him. Benji Bananas Adventures is published by Fingersoft, whom might be mostly known for their previous Benji Bananas game, or for Hill Climb Racing, but nonetheless they have provided the mobile gaming market with many other games, most of them being a success.
Benji Bananas Adventures is currently rated 3.9/5 stars on the Google Play Store with millions of downloads. On the Apple App Store although with a smaller following than on Android, it’s rated 4/5 stars on it’s most downloaded version.
Now, is the game only about swinging for bananas? Certainly, it’s main focus is that, but it has different game modes, powerups and provides a lot of challenge, which makes it just addicting enough to not want to stop playing for a long time.
In the game we control Benji, our little monkey, who is set out to learn the basics of a monkey’s life. At first Benji has to learn various things from his Daddy. He learns to swing from one tendril to another, without falling into the water and then landing on the other side of the jungle floor. Once he has got the basics, he gets a little hungry, so Daddy shows Benji how to swing the tendrils and get bananas at the same time!
As you progress through the levels, you will sometimes watch small animations, which tell this story and keep advancing it forward. It’s very simple and sweet, but provides some fun background for the game.
Benji Bananas Adventures starts you out on the level selection field, or map, which is part plain, part water and part jungle. It shows you the levels as little circles and once you complete one, you can progress towards the next. There are also little “movie” signs on some of the circles, which let’s you watch the story animations after the levels before it are finished. Levels are marked by three bananas, a green, red and yellow one. These act as the usual “three stars”, so if you complete a level perfectly, you get three bananas, but if you do just well enough, you might only get one or two.
Worth to mention here that the game gives you 10 lives at the start and if you fail a level, you lose one. It takes around 4 minutes to regenerate a life, but you can also watch an ad to instantly recharge some lives. Although if you have at least one life, you can play on.
Once you select a level, you are taken into the main part of the game, where the action happens. Benji starts high up on a cliff, from where he will launch himself towards the jungle tendrils, but only at your command. You can command him to do so by holding your finger on the screen and then releasing it. When Benji is in the air, he will be freefalling until you hold your finger on the screen again and land on a tendril. If you help Benji grab the tendril by the end of it, then he can swing towards the next one. Just hold your finger while you want him to hold the tendril and release it when you’ve got enough momentum to fly towards the next one.
This simple mechanic is the main concept of the game. Using one button you can control Benji without trouble, yet mastering it is way harder than you would think at first. There are a lot of different tricks that can get you a better swing. Still, the developers surely knew that just swinging around would get boring after a while, so they added different variations of game modes to keep you interested.
Benji Bananas Adventures starts you out with the simple swing and reach X meters gamemode. It’s not that hard at first, but once you have to reach very far, you might run into levels that you have to try again multiple times. Especially since the amount of times you can swing during most levels is limited. If you fall into the water, you lose 3 swing attempts.
The second game mode you get introduced to is about collecting bananas. You have a goal of collecting X bananas during the level while swinging around. On these levels you don’t have a meter goal, so you are free to fall into the water once you’ve got enough bananas, that means you’ve cleared the level.
The third gamemode Benji has to conquer is a time attack style mode, where you have a limited time to either reach X meters or gather X bananas.
Then there are some levels which combine variations of the previously mentioned ones, like having to collect X bananas while reaching X meters, all this with limited swings. It might sound simple, but it’s not. Later on in the game, there might be even more game modes that toughen up the challenge.
Now, the challenge in Benji Bananas Adventures comes from the fact that the swing mechanics use good physics simulation, so you can’t just grab the tendrils anywhere and swing forward at full speed. No, you have to grab them by their very end, so you can keep your momentum and swing by fast. If you don’t grab them correctly, then they slow you down and you lose either precious time or will have to grab onto more than needed tendrils, which lowers your allowed number of swings.
To help with your troubles, the game is nice enough to provide you with powerups. Afterall, what would a mobile game be without powerups? All powerups have a level limit, for they only unlock once you reach that specific level on the map. The first powerup you get is called Swing Boost and it adds a boost to Benji everytime he launches himself from a tendril. It’s very useful for cases where you lost some of your momentum, but you want to go faster again. The second powerup you get to know is the Magnet, which as implied by it’s name attracts something. That something is of course bananas, so any banana you fly near is instantly collected. It’s especially useful on levels where you have to collect a lot of them under a specific time limit.
All powerups can be bought for real money at the start of levels in multiples of three. So if you want to buy Magnets, you have to spend $0.99 for three. Don’t worry though, these same powerups can be found during levels as well. Sometimes while swinging around you might notice a bubble with a powerup icon in it. If you collect it, you get the powerup’s effect for the whole level. As for the other powerups that I didn’t mention yet, they are unlocked much later, so go out and progress with the game!
It’s worth to mention that Benji Bananas Adventures has a lot of ads in it. The map sometimes has a static ad at the bottom, while other full screen ads popup in the start of every third or so levels and randomly during level selection. The bright side is that the game allows you to watch an ad to gain extra 3 swings or extra 5 seconds on any level, which sometimes is exactly what you need to finish it.
If you are playing the fun and addictive game Benji Bananas Adventures, then you know that you can really end up spending a lot of time trying to get more time, lives, and swings You can purchase the swings, time, and lives through the app store, but this costs real money, and this can add up quickly.

Benji Bananas Adventures is a game which seems easy at first, but is very challenging, as I mentioned before. It’s not just a saying on my part, there are tricks and tips to the game that you might not even think about and that you could consider cheats. Don’t worry, these are not cheats that can get you in trouble, they are tricks that make your gameplay contain maybe a little less worrying and more joy.
The first thing that you should remember is that you get “Perfect Swing” notifications everytime you grab the very end of a tendril. If you keep swinging like this through multiple tendrils, your “Perfect Swing” meter goes up to X2, X3 and so on. This means that you are going at the fastest possible speed. So always try to aim for the very end when grabbing them. Sometimes there might be a bunch of bananas out of the way that you feel like you want to catch, but remember that if you slow down, you will have less chance at gathering other bananas, because your swings won’t be perfect anymore. Is it worth it to gain 10 bananas, but slow down and miss out on 50 later on?
Now, if you can’t help it but fail the perfect swings, then there is a trick to grabbing a tendril at it’s base and not the end. If you do so, it stops you almost instantly and you lose all momentum. Why would you do it then? For example if you only need 3 more bananas to finish the level and you have some directly below you, you might not be able to reach them with full speed, so stopping entirely and dropping down might get you those bananas and complete the level. This might also be useful when you spot a powerup below you and you can’t reach it otherwise.
On the same way of thinking, sometimes it might be worth it to swing backwards. If you grabbed the tendril a bit late and missed some bananas, you might be able to get them while holding on and letting gravity swing you backwards towards the remaining bananas. This might even help you keep some of your momentum, if you let it swing forward again and then let go.
A cheat tactic that you might consider using is when you are on a level where you have to reach X meters or gather X bananas, but you are running out of allowed swings. You could consider dropping down to the water when barely having any swings left, then watching the ad for 3 extra swings. This makes the game throw you high up again, with 3 new swings gained, so you can continue the level with a boost.
Also remember that on levels where there are no swing limits, you can drop down to the water an unlimited times and not get penalized for it, but get a boost everytime. Well, except on the time attack levels, where I don’t advise doing this as you lose time by falling into the water.
A last one that I would like to mention is probably the hardest to execute trick. You should have good momentum going, then release Benji from the tendril when it’s swinging towards the sky. This makes Benji fly up, without moving forward much, but once he falls down from above, you can grab onto a close tendril and use your falling momentum to turn it into sideways momentum, which will provide you with extreme speed.
I must say I enjoyed Benji Bananas Adventures immensely. I never expected this when I started out with the game, but it got me hooked. There is something very addicting about this game, which is probably how simple and childlike it looks at first, but once you play a few levels you realize it’s a challenge you’ve been looking for since long.
The simple mechanics are easy to understand and I had no real trouble with getting the hang of the swings. Still, there were many levels that I had to restart multiple times, because they were just so hard.
The story itself is very simple, like it could be in a children’s book. Benji and his Daddy are very cute and there are also new characters to get to know later on, like Bella. Although it’s a fun little thing that they added this story, it doesn’t add much to the gameplay itself, because it’s only presented in short animation form. During the levels the story is absent entirely and the game plays as a mixture of the platformer and the endless runner genre, although it’s hard to exactly name it’s style.
I also enjoyed the powerups, but was surprised to see that they ran out very fast once you got them. When they are introduced you get 3 of each and that’s it. After that you either buy more or gather them during levels, which is not always easy. Most of the time powerups seemed to be out of my way and hard to reach, so I had to use some tricky moves to get them, but even like that I couldn’t always do it. If Benji Bananas Adventures would have more options to get powerups, it would be great.
My biggest complaint about the game is the amount of ads present. There are static ads on the map, which is the least annoying and they don’t always appear. The main problem is the full screen ads that pop in during the start of every third or so levels and sometimes even outside of levels. Like they are set to randomly just pop in and take the player out of the experience, which is not nice at all. I tried to look past them, but full screen ads are just extremely annoying. If not for the ads, I would be content with the game, as the gameplay is amazing and fun, with a simple childish story to back it up.
Artwork: I give Benji Bananas Adventures a 7/10 for it’s artwork. The level design is pretty, with nice backgrounds of the jungle, waterfalls and the hills, I liked that a lot. Maybe the artwork could be a bit more higher resolution, but it doesn’t take much away from the experience.
Music & SFX: I give the game’s music a 8/10. The music is silly in the menus and fits a monkey, but very relaxing in the levels. Thanks to the SFX, the levels truly feel like a jungle. There are frogs croaking and birds chirping in the backgrounds, it’s just well done.
Story & Originality: I give the game’s story a 6/10. It’s not very special and not executed in the best way, but it’s a fun little childish story. I wish it would be present more during the levels, other than just the short animations.
General Gameplay: The general gameplay of the game is it’s strongest point, which get’s it a 9/10. It’s just a lot of fun to swing and fly around in the jungle as Benji. The physics are good, the controls are responsive and getting momentum feels like you are really going fast. I loved the gameplay.
Addictiveness: I give it a 7/10 for it’s addictiveness. There were multiple times when I wanted to play a single level, but ended up playing 5 in a row, without getting tired of it. If only the full screen pop in ads wouldn’t be there, I could imagine myself playing much more.
Overall Score: 7/10.
