• You can’t die in this game. However, your movement speed will be dramatically decreased.

• In order to get meat and animal resources you must hunt them with swords or spears.

• Trees are a limited resource. If you want to have them continuously, make sure you plant fruits or cones from time to time.

• Make sure you constantly replenish your Food bar. Be careful though – eating too many chilies will damage your blockhead.

• After you fill a chest you can remove it from the ground and place it in your inventory so you can have a chest full of stuff on you at any time.

• As you learn from the tutorial, I must remind you that if you place a fire or a torch near a wood construction it will burn. So don’t do that.

• When you encounter an ocean, use a boat. It is faster than swimming and it can be carried in your inventory at all time.

• When you are mining make sure you have enough torches and lanterns with you. Your blockhead hates the darkness and can become unhappy very quickly.

• When you are cutting trees start from the top to the bottom. That way you will get more branches and various resources.

• Like in real life, touching a Cactus hurts. The damage is little but there is some damage so be aware of that.

• Get a bed as soon as possible. Sleeping in it will provide more energy so you can be active for a longer period of time.

• Be careful when exploring at night. You will encounter not-so-friendly creatures such as Dropbears.

• In order to realize if you are using the right tool for a job you can keep an eye on the color of the square. If it is white you are doing it with your bare hands. If the square is red, you are using a wrong tool. If the square is green, you are doing a good job.

The Blockheads Review

The Blockheads is one of the games that you think you know anything about (because you played similar games) but somehow manages to surprise you. Don’t get me wrong, the game looks like any sandbox out there but it’s at the same different. You switch to another perspective (from 3D to 2D) but in a weird way that suits the game. And I can go on with every aspect of the game and get to the same result – same but different.

The greatest thing the game has is the fact that it is multiplayer and you can join sandboxes that belong to other people. That is fun and ensures tons of things to do (good and naughty as well – it would be a shame if I would place a fire near someone’s wood house). Also, I really like the fact that in Blockheads you can choose your gender and from a lot of different appearances – it gives the game an authentic touch. The idea of the portal that is “responsible” for everything is a bit weird but the fact that it can spawn additional blockheads is great. You can also upgrade it and create others if you have enough time gems. Moreover, I think that the fact that you need to eat, sleep and feel conformable in order to survive and be more efficient is great. This means that The Blockheads is more than an endless sandbox game because of the survival elements and that is more than awesome in my opinion.

There are a few things I don’t like about the game too. First of all, a game of this complexity should have an option of saving in cloud. It is mandatory because I don’t want to lose all my progress by mistake or some kind of error. Secondly, I would have loved the idea of a more customizable house (more types of walls or chandeliers for example). I know that I ask for much but I really don’t think that would have been a problem – but maybe at the next patch. In the end, I think that it would have helped the game if the developers would have think more thoroughly the camera idea. At the moment you can take pictures and share them but you can do that using the device’s screenshoot mode. Something with selfies or special filters would have been awesome.

Overall, The Blockheads is a great game with the potential of become the greatest. The only condition is to keep updating it and listen to the suggestions of their fans.

Ratings:

Artwork: The Blockheads gets 8 out of 10 for its artwork. I am aware that the visuals of the game are old and pixelated but that’s the game’s theme and here we are talking about the artwork not the graphics. Visually speaking, the game looks bad and anything but modern. However, the fact that you have a fully customizable world on a mobile game is amazing. The player can fully interact with the environment and I think that is awesome. You have different geographic segments in-game and even weather. Everything is oriented around blocks and you can do wonders with blocks. The character design is hilarious, the fauna is funny and the flora is weird in a good way.  The few animations that are in the game are also looking rather funny than great.  

Music & SFX: I give the game a rating of 6 out of 10 at this segment. One of the reasons I don’t consider The Blockheads the best game of its genre (and love Terraria) is because it lacks music in-game. There is a music option in the settings but I have never heard a song for the time I’ve played (with the exception of the great teaser from the menus). However, the sound effects are saving the game because they are very good. I was surprised by the variety and their quality – the sound is loud, clear and distinctive. I really think that the developers should focused more on music.

Story/Originality: The Blockheads gets 6 out of 10 at this section. Don’t get me wrong, I really like the game but I must be objective. The reason that The Blockheads exists is because of Minecraft and let’s say Terraria (PC games that are available on mobile devices too). The theme, the graphics, the content all belong to another game and no matter how good this one is, it will always be tagged as a copy. Unfortunately, there isn’t a story or enough additional content (you have some though and that is good) to consider The Blockheads an authentic game. If you don’t mind (I don’t) that this game looks like others you will probably have a great experience with it.

General Gameplay: I give the game a rating of 9 out of 10 for its gameplay. The Blockheads has one of the most comprehensive tutorials for a mobile device I’ve ever seen because you learn the basics of crafting, surviving and exploring.  Even though it may become overwhelming, the beauty of this type of games is the fact that there isn’t anything good or wrong. There are certainly useful guides and strategies to follow if you want to ease your life but you can go head first in the game and hope for the best. For the time I’ve played I did not encounter any freezes or crashes – just some minor almost imperceptible bugs.

Addictiveness: The Blockheads gets 10 out of 10 at this section. If you are a fan of this construction games you will certainly spend a lot of time in the game. It is simple yet complex to the infinity. You can basically do whatever you want in this game – exploration, construction, fighting and even hunting. If you are not a fan of the game I still think that you should give it a try. There is a reason why that in an era where technology takes hold of everything and extreme realistic graphics are available for everyone, a game like Minecraft is the most popular game  between kids – and fortunately (or not? – I don’t know, there is too much pressure on me) The Blockheads resemblance it and it’s even better in some departments.

Overall, The Blockheads gets a rating of 7.8 out of 10. It may not be the only adventure game on the market but it is too good not to be worth mentioning.
