Loy is nothing similar to other virtual pets, except for its siblings Moy and Joy. As unique looking as Loy is, the gameplay should not scare anyone away, as it uses a well known virtual pet games formula. Once you are at the main screen, you will be asked to name your pet, or leave it as it is. When you have chosen the name, you will get sent out to take care of your newly hatched Loy.
Probably the first thing you will need to do is to make sure Loy’s needs are fulfilled. These needs are happiness, hunger and sleep. As time passes by, these needs meters will all start to go down. You can access each of these in different rooms of Loy’s house, changing scenery whenever you want to cater to a different need.
Happiness is dealt with in the living room, where it can be restored by playing various minigames with Loy. There are 10 different minigames to play, including collecting falling Loys into buckets, chopping trees, skateboarding, match-3 with blobs or using an umbrella to slowly descent from the sky in the rain. These are just a few examples of the minigames, but no matter which one you play, they always award you coins, depending on how far your got into the current game.
Other than playing games in Loy – Virtual Pet Game, you can also purchase trophies in this room, which will appear behind Loy as decoration. You can even activate the talk-back function in this room, which will make the little blob repeat anything said into the phone.
The second need, hunger can be taken care of in the kitchen, where you can purchase different ingredients for recipes, then cook the food for Loy. Feeding it to him restores the hunger meter and makes him happier. You can also use the globe button in this same room to check out random Loys from around the world, owned by other players. You can even like these pets using the like button, making other players happy.
To fulfill the last need, you have to go to the bedroom and make Loy sleep using the lightbulb button. This will slowly restore the sleep meter, without requiring any interaction. You also have the option to go to the forest from this room, using a separate button. On the forest screen you can buy a bird house and upgrade it multiple times to add trees, decorations and birds to it. It’s much like a fish tank, but with birds. Tapping on your birds sometimes also awards a small amount of coins.
All this talk about coins, but what are coins used for in Loy – Virtual Pet Game? There are a huge amount of different customization options for buy for your Loy, including googly eyes in different colors, changing the blob’s color, hairs and hats, glasses and eyebrows, different kind of accessories and complete clothes. Other than buying these items for Loy, you can also customize the house with wallpapers, floor tiles and decorations like a globe or a telescope.
Most of the purchasable items are level limited though, so you will have to level up your Loy to buy some of the stuff. Leveling is done by playing the minigames, so the more you play the faster Loy levels up. Gaining levels don’t only unlock new clothing and items, but also makes your pet grow in size.
The game doesn’t have any kind of microtransactions, but ads tend to appear at times, especially when going from one screen to another, like from a minigame to the main screen.
Loy is a pet who doesn’t ask for much, but basic care, although giving it some nice clothes and decorating its house is still a nice idea, isn’t it? Coins are not always easy to gather, especially when you need thousands, so cheats might be an answer to that. Whether you are looking for cheats or tips, I’m here to show you some!
One of the easiest ways to gather coins in Loy – Virtual Pet Game is by playing minigames. Some of these games can take a long time to reach a part where you get an acceptable amount of coins, so why not play the fastest and easiest one? Second on the games list, the shade sorting one can be done under 10 seconds and awards you 150 coins for finishing it. All you need to do is to place all the shades of colors in the correct order, starting from light to dark. You can do this any number of times for easy coins.
If you are bored of the shade sorting, try any of the other available minigames like the skateboarding, wood chopping or match-3 with blobs. The match-3 is definitely worth to play, as it’s not only fun, but also awards a huge amount of coins under 2 minutes. If you play fast enough, you can get 1000 coins for each attempt.
Lastly, remember that Loy is only a virtual pet, so nothing wrong will happen if you leave it for a few days. Disabling notifications might also help, because otherwise Loy will ask you to play with it every few hours.
To be honest, I was never impressed by virtual pet games, but Loy turns out to be cute enough that I actually smiled at this game a few times. Not sure which aspect of the game got that reaction out of me, but it’s good sign.
When I started the game I was met with the familiar arrangement of buttons around the screen. Other virtual pet games, especially Moy and Joy also use this system, with a few differences.
On the main screen I was met with my pet, who is a cute little colored blob. Loy reacted to my taps and moving my finger around the screen, while whistling and making some weird noises, but it didn’t do much else. I decided to see what his needs are, which got me to the minigames thanks to his happiness meter.
There are less minigames in Loy – Virtual Pet Game than in some of the developer’s other games, like Moy, but most of the ones were still fun. My favorite was probably the wood chopping one, which features rock music and fast gameplay. It’s safe to say that minigames are the best features of Frojo Apps’ pet simulators.
I also checked out the other needs of my pet, but both hunger and sleep didn’t really require any attention on my part, other than buying some ingredients for food and pressing a button to send Loy to sleep. Clothing and other customization items were also not too exciting, although while looking at other players’ pets, I admit there can be some interesting styling options.
Weirdly enough, in the first few hours after having this game, my pet already got 23 likes from players around the world, which was interesting to see. While I only customized my Loy with very few items, some people still found it to be cute.
Overall, this is a fine pet simulator, but it’s not one I could keep playing for long. The amount of coins and levels required to purchase better items is a lot, and I’m not sure I would like to grind my way through minigames for them. Even though it might not last long, if you want something to pass the time with for a short time, then try out Loy – Virtual Pet Game!
Ratings:
Artwork: I give the artwork of Loy – Virtual Pet Game an 8/10. Loy uses the same artwork as Frojo Apps’ other games, which is presented in a happy, cartoonish and clean style. This fits the theme and the gameplay well enough, so no complaints there.
Music & SFX: The music and SFX of the game deserves a 7/10. While the same ‘easy to get bored of’ music is repeated in the menus, the minigames all have varied music. These are mostly enjoyable, with distinct styles. The SFX are most well done in the minigames as well, while Loy’s weird sounds and whistling on the main screen can become annoying over long periods of time.
Story & Originality: For its originality, the game gets a 6/10. Another virtual pet game with similar promises as others. The game’s presentation is good enough to not get a lower rating, but I wouldn’t call it exceptional or inventional in any way.
General Gameplay: The general gameplay of Loy – Virtual Pet Game gets a 7/10. The pet care part of the gameplay is simple and anyone can do it, but at the same time it’s not too fun either, it feels more like work. The minigames save the title though, as they provide the much needed joy, which is lacking from the main part of the game. Customizing your Loy with clothes and items can be a goal and might be fun, but coins are very tiresome to gather and most items are expensive.
Addictiveness: As for addictiveness, I give the game a 5/10. Honestly, the minigames are the only thing that the game has going for it in the long run. Even those can be bored of after a while though, especially when considering the grind you need to do to buy any of the better looking clothing items. If you are up for repeating the same minigames over and over again, then you might play this game for long, but otherwise I can only imagine it being a short, passing thing.
Overall Score: 6/10.
