We have seen Ash Ketchum’s wrestle to become the best Pokémon trainer, we know about Taichi Yagami and his partner Agumon’s struggle to save the world. Now it’s time to meet a new hero, Eli Shane, who wants to become the greatest Slugslinger that Slugterra will ever see. I know these terms, Slugterra and Slugslinger, might be alien to you as it was for me. Slugterra: Slug it Out! is based upon an animated series called Slugterra. Download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
Slugterra and Pokémon have a lot in common. Both of them have frictional creatures, a kid who doesn’t know much about his father and wants to become the best trainer, or Slugslinger in Eli Shane’s case, and of course let’s not forget ‘something’ used to capture or shoot those creatures, Pokémon’s Pokéballs or Blasters in Slugterra. The difference between two is almost nonexistent, Slugterra might appeal more just because of the fact maybe we have witnessed the presence of Pokémon for a long time?
Most of animated series adaptations for games that we have seen are based upon turn based strategy but Slugterra: Slug it Out! takes strategic match-three puzzle as its main way to get you through Eli Shane’s story and it isn’t turn based. Before I start writing further, I’ve to say that I’m in love with this game, played it continuously for four days and absolutely loved the mechanics. Slugterra: Slug it Out! isn’t your regular match-three game and I believe it’s the best one that mobile market has to offer!!! Just go through this review and you’ll find yourself extremely agreeing with me. This amazing game is brought to us by Nerd Corps Entertainment and is available for Android and iOS users only, and unfortunately Windows Mobile users will miss another stunning game.

Slugterra is an underground world and the home ground of Cave Trolls and small magical creatures called Slugs. If these Slugs are thrown using Blasters at high speed they can transform into more powerful version of themselves. The main antagonist of Slugterra is Dr. Blakk, who wants to gain control all over Slugterra. He’s a powerful Slugslinger with a special Blaster and has corrupted his Slugs into darker and more powerful form using dark science of Ghouling. Dr. Blakk was already once defeated by Will Shane, father of Eli Shane, but after the disappearance of Will Shane now it’s up to Eli Shane to bring the things back to order by defeating Dr. Blakk.
The game has two modes. The Story mode and it will take you step by step through the original story of Slugterra. You’ll meet different people and Cave Trolls, make your Shane Gang, and defend Slugterra. The Story Mode has a total of thirteen chapters. Except the first Training chapter, every chapter has almost ten normal duel rounds and one bonus round. The Challenge Mode requires an internet connection to work and four slugs are required to take a part in challenges. You’ll have twenty-four hours to complete these challenges and will be replaced by new one after that time resulting in loss of progress in previous ones. For a normal stage you can achieve a maximum rating of three stars. One star is just for clearing the stage while the remaining two stars are for clearing the stage within a specified time limit.
The game starts with beautifully made zooming and panning pictures instead of movies. You’ll encounter them along all the game and I felt it was a nice touch as it saves space and does the job too. After that you’ll be greeted by a time-consuming tutorial and without which I would have been banging my head with the wall. The first Cave Troll that you’ll meet is Kord Zane, who is a huge bluish, Johnny bravo shaped Slugslinger and he will guide you through the basics of the game mechanics, which initially will resemble normal a match-three game.
Before we proceed towards game’s mechanics, let’s get through few more basic terms.
Blasters are part of the Slugslinger’s basic gear needed for slinging Slugs. Blasters are used to shoot Slugs with high force so that they reach velocity required for transformation. In Slugterra: Slug it Out!, there are just a total of twenty normal and five Ghoul Slugs, which aren’t even half of the total slugs. There are three fusion shot available, these shots transforms two Slugs into a single more powerful slug.
At a time you’ll have up to six types of tiles arranged in a grid whose maximum size will reach 7×5 when you’ll have four Slugs. Two of the six belongs to Blaster and health, which are fixed, while the remaining four will vary according to your selected Slugs. You can move the tiles in horizontal and vertical axis only, moving diagonally isn’t allowed, and it doesn’t matter if the tiles matches or not, you still can move them on your free will.
Matching blaster tiles will make Eli Shane shoot a blaster, and matching health tiles will heal him. As I’ve previously mentioned the remaining tiles will be dependent upon your choice of slugs. Consider Eli Shane’s first Slug named Burpy, an infurnus fire based Slug with fire symbol tiles. Matching these fire tiles will fill a portion of Burpy’s transformation bar, and once it’s full you can tap on it to activate transformation which will deal a greater damage and/or activate the special ability of Slug.
Now it’s time for my favorite part. There are three levels of transformation for every slug, first transformation is the basic and you will have to unlock remaining two transformations by upgrading your Slug. You’ll have to fill up all three pieces of bar to reach the highest level of transformation. The catch here is that a same level transformed slug can stop another slug of same level but gets destroyed in the process, while a higher level slug will kill a lower level slug and continues the attack.
You’ll have to match minimum of three tiles to get the desired effect and the effectiveness adds up if more than three tiles are pulled together. Four tiles doubles the effect, five tiles triples, and the resultant increases in this order. There are slugs that can freeze your character, decreasing its shooting speed, slow poison it, even hides few of your tiles and a lot more. Once your character freezes, few tiles will change into a tiles with hammer symbol, and you’ll have to join these to free yourself. This game isn’t turn based hence you have to be quick in matching these tiles. The quicker you’ll be, the earlier you’ll finish off the round.
There are more than fifty unlockable characters. You can choose to play as any of them, and they are available in store. If you’ll take a look at store, you’ll come across boosters which are more like powerups and can give you a temporary edge against your opponent but there is a limitation that you can load one booster per round. The four boosters and their functions are as following
Blaster Damage – This booster costs two hundred fifty coins and increases the power of blaster shots resulting in more damage.
Blaster Speed – Using this booster will increase the attacking speed of both of your blaster and Slugs shots, and costs two hundred fifty coins.
Slug Auto-Charger – This can come in handy if your opponent is quick and you aren’t able to match opponent’s attacking speed. This causes Slugs to recharge automatically. The price of this booster is five hundred coins.
Slug Pre-Igniter – This is the most expensive booster and using this means that you’ll enter your match with Slugs fully charged which means your opponent shouldn’t even stand a chance. This booster costs one thousand coins.
The only currency of this game is coins which are rare and you’ll have to do a lot of struggle to get these. These coins are required to purchase Slugs, upgrade them, unlock character and buy those temporary boosters. All the time you’ll have just enough coins to purchase a single Slug and upgrade it, you cannot even think about getting another one which makes it more like a gamble.
One method to get coins is to finish rounds with all three stars, more stars means more coins and after that you can always repeat previous rounds. If you’re looking for a jump and don’t have any issue on spending few bucks from your pocket then you should take a look at the in-app purchase section of the game. There are four packages available to choose from. The cheapest package cost just $1.99 and gives five thousand coins in return. The second package named coin bag costs $2.99 and doubles the number of coins that you’ll get which are ten thousand. Coin sack, which is the third package, gives twenty five thousand coins for $4.99 and I believe these should be enough for everyone, and if still it isn’t then you can always spend $9.99 which will get you one hundred thousand coins.
This review is based upon 2.1.1 version of Slugterra: Slug it Out! and required Android users to be on Android 2.3 (gingerbread) and iOS users on iOS 6.0. I found out a small bug in this release that is you’ll not be able to use any of the pause menu’s buttons, if you pause and minimize the game, but i was able to get back in the game by tapping randomly on screen couple of times. iOS version of this game is apparently different than Android’s because there isn’t any multiplayer mode in android version while there is in iOS.
Slugterra: Slug it Out! can be synced with Google Play Games for cloud storage which means that you’ll not lose any of your game data if you uninstall your game, and you can access your game data from several devices. This game also has twenty four achievements to its name in Google Play Game and can give you a maximum of thirty six thousand XP. These achievements includes likes of using a specific combination of slugs against an opponent, and winning a fight without being hit directly.
The very thing that can stop the users from finishing off this game in the least possible time is the rarity of coins within the limits of game but this rarity can be overcome by using in-app purchases or going the illegal way of using a modified apk. There is a modified version of this game available which will give you unlimited coins to start with. All you have to do is follow these step to get it
You still have to play the story mode to unlock things before you can purchase them as this version will just give you unlimited coins. I also have a tip for you which always helped me to have an edge over my opponent and that tip is:
Let’s start with the gameplay, and as I’ve previously mentioned that it’s the best strategic match-three puzzler that I have played yet!!! Normally I don’t like match-threes because they feels so girlish but this is different, you have to be quick, you have to know which slugs to choose, when to launch them and at what evolution level to counter your enemy’s measures. It is a proper strategic game. The addictiveness of this game can be measured from the fact that it wasted a lot of my time as it took four times as much time that I normally spend on playing a game before I write the review, it was partially because of the fact that there isn’t any stamina system to stop a user from playing it for hours!!
The only issue that I have with this game is that the coins aren’t enough, you’ll never have much of them to do experiments or try different Slugs to find out which one will fill up your needs to cope with the increasing difficulty of game. Normally developer leaves other methods, for example, watching videos and installing apps, to let users earn the premium currency but there isn’t any such thing in Slugterra: Slug it Out!
The UI of the game is simple yet beautiful, everything is within the range of access and can easily be used by both hands to speed up the matching process. All the animations, for example, matching tiles and launching Slugs, are gorgeous and fluid. The overall artwork is incredible and beautifully designed. I loved the idea of panning pictures instead of movies and all the characters are exactly the way the cartoons are. The sound department is lacking just a bit. I’m not saying that it’s bad, the background music is decent so do the rest of the sound effects are but they aren’t upto the level of rest of the things. I would have loved voice narration behind the panning pictures and whenever there is any dialogization.
Overall, this game has really made me a fan of Slugterra and I’m definitely gonna watch complete cartoon series too. If you’re looking to kill hours, literally hours and like match-three games then you should give this game a try.
Ratings
Artwork: I’ll give Slugterra: Slug it Out! an 8.5/10 here. The artwork is beautiful just like the cartoons are. I love the evolved forms of Slugs. The only thing that feels repetitive is the same expressions of the character when you win or lose a round.
Music & SFX: It feels a bit weak here and gets a 7.5/10. The music is fast paced and gives battle like feeling but it sometimes can be harsh to the ears. A bit more soft background music and voice narration behind those pictures would have took this department to the height too.
Story & Originality: I’ll give Slugterra: Slug it Out! a 7.5/10 here. Background story isn’t something that is required to play the game but it does adds a factor of interest. The Story of Slugterra resembles way too much with Pokémon hence loses a bit of score here but it still better than what you see in rest of the match-three puzzlers
General Gameplay: Slugterra Slug it Out! gets a 9/10 here. It’s the highest score that I’ve ever gave to a match-three puzzler. Although the basics are still the same that you’ll see in rest of the puzzlers but stuff which makes it stand out from rest of them is fast pace, less levels, no stamina system and different game mechanics.
Addictiveness: I’ll give this game an 8.5/10 for addictiveness. This game is extremely addictive and I’ll not recommend it to people who don’t have much free time as this game can waste their time by taking hours and they wouldn’t even know what hit them.
Overall I’ll give Slugterra: Slug it Out! an 8.5/10.
