Races in the game differ from usual ones, as there is no finish line. Your goal is to destroy as many cars on the road as possible, while collecting their coins and advancing the leaderboards with your score. Controls are very simple in the game, as holding your finger on the screen will constantly fire the equipped weapon on your car, while moving left or right is done by moving your finger in that direction.
Using this easy system, you will have to make the best out of each race. Whenever you see a car, don’t hestitate to shoot, as they are all enemies. Blowing up any vehicle will cause it to throw some coins, which you can pick up from the road and it will be added to your bank account.
As you get further on the road, the game will become faster and will send more cars your way, along with obstacles and even missiles. Different, more powerful car types will appear as you progress, which are much harder to kill than the basic enemies. Some of the 10 special enemy vehicles include the coin truck, the explosive truck, spiked cars, helicopters and even tanks.
Of course racing and destroying the same enemies wouldn’t be too exciting for a long time, so for this reason Road Riot has social features as well. After you reach certain rankings on the leaderboards, players who are occupying those ranks will appear in your game as boss cars, which if you destroy will award you with bounty rewards, and you will take their place on the weekly leaderboards. For a more friendly interaction, you can also invite friends using the Tango system and send gifts to them.
Your car will also need upgrades, as mentioned before. Head on into the garage, where you can check out the different statistics of your current car. The Main Weapon and Armor stats can be upgraded for coins, which will not only make them more powerful, but will also be indicated by visual changes on your car. There is also a Side Weapon and Turrets stat, which can only be upgraded with gems, the premium currency. Each of the 4 stats can be upgraded 15 times, making them more powerful each time.
New cars can also be purchased in the garage, but only when you reach certain levels like 10 or 20, using the experience you gain from races. These new cars use different weapons than the machine gun on your beginner vehicle. Some of them have built in turrets, magnets, missiles or even lasers.
To keep players interested in the long run, Road Riot has Daily Challenges, Missions and achievements, along with the thrill of being top rated on the leaderboards. Daily Challenges are usually very simple and require you to collect stars during levels by destroying helicopters, and award you with coins for the most part. Missions on the other hand award gems, but require you to complete three different random objectives, like destroying 50 enemies, upgrading your car’s weapon two times and getting a multiplier of 2x.
If you feel like you want some gem only features unlocked, then you must spend real money in the form of in-app purchases. Gems can be bought in various packs, the cheapest being 75 gems for $1.99 and the most expensive being 7,500 gems for $99.99. You can also exchange these gems for coins and keys, both of which can also be earned by watching optional ads.
Road Riot is an easy game at first, but if you want to get somewhere on the leaderboards, then you must upgrade your car for success. The side effect of this is the appearance of more powerful enemies, and those might make you wish for some cheats. Fortunately the game has multiple included cheats.
If you find your car exploding often, and therefore limiting your progress, then consider using one of the included cheats, the “Save Me” function. This allows you to pay 1 gem to resurrect your car immediately, while also destroying all enemies close-by. The cost of this resurrect goes up each time you use it on the same run, so be wary of that!
Another great option to cheat the game is to buy headstarts and powerups at the beginning of a race. These also cost gems, but can get you much further than you could get on your own, without cheats.
A third way to get an advantage is to buy the gem only upgrades for your cars, like the Turrets or the Side Weapons. These not only make your races easier, but also help your fingers relax thanks to the automatic turrets.
Of course, these gem needs have to be sustained somehow as well, so don’t forget to complete Daily Challenges and Missions. These both can provide you with much needed gems, although missions are the sure way to go, as Daily Challenges only award gems on each 5th day.
As a last tip, keep in mind that if you run out of keys or coins, you can always watch an ad to get 1 key or 100 coins. Both of these can be repeated any number of times, essentially giving you an endless fountain of keys and coins!
Road Riot no doubt is touching one of the most popular game genres on mobile phones, the racing car games. It doesn’t only let you race as much as your heart desires, but also allows some very addicting destruction!
The general design of the game got me to like it immediately from the first race I took part in. The controls are very responsive and easy to use, yet depending on reaction times and the current speed of a race, the game can be very challenging.
I also really liked how the leaderboards function is entwined with the gameplay itself. Other players from the ranks appearing as boss cars with bounties on their heads is a really cool touch, that not a lot of other racing games use. It was always a great moment when one of these cars appeared, as that meant I beaten someone else’s record and advanced on the ranks. Just after playing for a day, I already got to the 31th place on the weekly leaderboards, which is surprising, but a good feeling at the same time.
As for upgrades and new cars, I sadly couldn’t unlock a new car yet, as leveling takes a while, but the upgrade system is well done. I especially liked how the look of my car changed slightly every time I upgraded something.
In the end, Road Riot is a solid combat racing game, with Daily Challenges, Missions, achievements and leaderboards to keep players busy for a long time. Definitely a worthy pickup, if you like the genre!

Artwork: I give the artwork of Road Riot a 7/10. The game looks cartoonish and a little silly, with its simple effects, but it’s not much of a negative thing. It’s either a hit or miss, whether someone likes this style. I’m on the edge personally, but it’s definitely worthy of a positive rating.
Music & SFX: The music and SFX of the game gets a 6/10. Neither the music or the SFX are the strongest merit of the game, that’s for sure. Both are pretty mediocre, although the SFX can be action filled at times with all the explosions and machine gun sounds.
Story & Originality: As for originality, the game deserves a 6/10 as well. Road Riot is not an innovator in any way, it uses mostly the same tropes of other combat racing games, but at least the presentation is good enough, instead of feeling forced. Sadly, I can’t rate it higher though.
General Gameplay: The gameplay of Road Riot gets an 8/10 from me. While the game has nice features like upgrades and new cars to purchase, Daily Challenges and Missions, the best part is definitely the racing. The gameplay is exciting, full of action and it’s fast paced enough that you can’t look away, or a crash is imminent. Beating other player’s scores on the leaderboards is also a great motivation to play, especially with the bounty mechanic. The game also doesn’t force you to spend money, everything can be beaten if you are good enough.
Addictiveness: Regarding the addictiveness of the game, it definitely gets a 9/10. There is always something to look for in this title. Be it the leaderboards, the achievements, the various challenges and mission or the new cars, everyone will find something exciting! Even after a long time, the game will invite you back for some destruction and competition!
