Before I downloaded and started playing DragonVale, I had no idea about what the game could be, other than Dragons of course. The developers of DragonVale have implemented multiple game concepts together, combined them and made a game out of it. It is nice to see that you need to take care of dragons, breed them and help them grow. The graphics of DragonVale are decent, but I can easily tell that the developers spend some time on designing all the different buildings, dragons and objects of the game. There is only one soundtrack and multiple sound effects in DragonVale, which are of decent quality, just like the graphics of the game. At the beginning of the gameplay, there is a nicely build tutorial, which teaches new players how to properly play the game and what their goals are.
After that, the gameplay becomes pretty straightforward, but thankfully, there are many quests and goals that you need to complete. A very positive aspect about DragonVale is that you can visit the Islands of your friends and other people around the world, help them out and gain experience points and gold coins. You can also send and receive messages and gifts, which is very nice because you can work together and help each other out.
Even though DragonVale is a pretty decent game, it also has a few negative aspects. For starters, the game is littered with advertisements, pop-up advertisements to be more specific. The pop-up advertisements tend to show up exactly when you are supposed to tap on your screen, which makes me feel like the developers did this on purpose. The developers try to trick people into tapping on the advertisements, on accident, so that they can generate an income for themselves. The worst part about the advertisements in DragonVale, is that if you accidently do tap on one of them, your game will minimalize and your browser will start up. You will be taken to the website of the advertiser, which is not only very annoying, but also very obstructive. The developers of DragonVale should either look into placing their advertisements differently and in a less obstructive way, or simply remove them altogether.
The second negative aspect about DragonVale is that the gameplay becomes very slow-paced, after you have played the game for a while. Taking actions already starts off taking an hour at the beginning, and it increases, the more you progress through the game. Of course, you can instantly complete actions by spending gems, which is the premium currency of the game. It is very difficult to obtain premium gems by playing the game, which means that you either need to purchase them in the in-game store or you have to be patient and wait out every single action that you take. The developers need to understand that not every player can afford to spend money on a free-to-play game. Loyal players should be awarded, instead of punished, and that is exactly what the developers of DragonVale are doing right now. Players of DragonVale that spend a lot of hours on the game, should be able to gems easier.

Artwork: I give DragonVale an 8/10 for its artwork. The graphics and animations in DragonVale are pretty decent, especially considering that DragonVale is a mobile game. There are a lot of mobile games with similar graphics and game mechanics, but that doesn’t take away that the developers of DragonVale have done a decent job with their games’ visuals. I really like the fact that the developers were able to fit the user interface with the overall theme of the game. It is very nice that you can zoom in and zoom out of the world map. The aspect I like the most about the artwork of DragonVale, is its animations. I love the fact that, when you zoom into the world map, you see people walking around and your dragons flying around. This makes the game feel alive and it enhances the gameplay, making it feel like you really rule over the island.
Music & SFX: I give DragonVale a 7/10 for its music and SFX. There is only one soundtrack in DragonVale, which repeats itself in the background. The quality of the soundtrack is pretty decent and easy on the ears, which doesn’t bother you when you are playing the game. I like the fact that the game has many sound effects, from menu button SFX to leveling up SFX. The soundtrack and sound effects are combined nicely, and fit the overall graphics of the game. Having more soundtracks would have been better, for different stages of the game perhaps.
Story & Originality: I give DragonVale a 7/10 for its story and originality. There are many games on the app stores that have similar gameplay, game mechanics and game concepts just like DragonVale. This makes it feel like the developers did not implement any kind of original ideas into their game, but this is false. For example, you can breed dragons in DragonVale, and this is a feature that I haven’t seen in any other game yet. You also need to produce treats for your dragons and level them up, which is very nice. There is a very short story at the beginning of the gameplay, telling you that you now own an Island, and that it is your job to take care of it.
General Gameplay: I give DragonVale a 7/10 for general gameplay. The gameplay in DragonVale starts with a tutorial, teaching you the basics of the game and helps you get the hang of it. After the tutorial ends, the gameplay becomes pretty straightforward, but still entertaining to play due to all of its features. I like the fact that the controls are responsive and that the user interface is clear, which really helps to navigate easier through the menus and in-game store. DragonVale is not a game that I would personally play, but I can imagine that the gameplay is attractive to people who enjoy dragon simulations and city-builder games.
Addictiveness: I give DragonVale a 6/10 for addictiveness. If you enjoy playing simulation/city-builder games, than DragonVale might be just the game for you. This game features dragons, which you can breed and take care off. The gameplay itself can be pretty addictive, but the reason I only rate it a six out of ten, is due to the fact that the gameplay is very slow-paced. The only way to make the game more addictive and enjoyable, is by using gems to speed things up within the gameplay. Gems are almost impossible to obtain without paying for them, which leads me to believe that the developers did this on purpose. They want to force people to spend money on DragonVale, especially the players who are impatient. This is a big no-go for me.
