Ready to play a game that combines the sport of riding a skateboard and the getting through treacherous and dangerous terrain? Created by Zhang Huimei, Skater Boy was created so that players who had a iOS compatibility of 4.3 or higher could play the game with ease. This skating game is available for players to change into any of the world’s most popular languages but players will most likely be able to figure out the game through simple deducing of playing through a couple of rounds of the game. Most devices should have an iOS compatibility of 4.3 or higher unless you have a iPod from a long time ago. So if you don’t have a 4.3 compatibility, you will have to download the 7.0 iOS version that is available through the app store through the internet.
Skater Boy has received 20 reviews. This pretty much means that the game is not very popular and not too many people appreciate the game for its simplistic nature. A game is usually defined by the number of reviews that it has. So this game is considered pretty poor and I will tell you why it is later on. There have no updates to Skater Boy which is kind of concerning considering that the game seems pretty inaccurate in terms of some of the hitboxes and how you lose your lives in the game. This game was made in April 23 of 2013 and hasn’t received any updates. This probably means that the producer has not bothered to improve the game at all and just made the game for some revenue. That aside, Skater Boy is only 14.0MB large so it is a really small game that doesn’t require much space on your device. It is available on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
This pixelated game, Skater Boy, is very similar to Mario except with a different sprite than Mario. Your goal in each of the 30 levels that the game has is to reach the end. You have three lives every single time you start a level. You can lose lives from the numerous dangers that the game has such as a living plant with sharp teeth. It is essentially a problem solving game where you need to figure out how to go past the dangers in the game. The pixelation in this game is very similar to Minecraft so some players appreciate the artwork in this game because they love Minecraft, but honestly, it isn’t very good and it doesn’t seem like much time was put into making the game any good. During Skater Boy, you have the ability to jump so that you can get on platforms or to hop over any obstacles that might be in the game.
The other thing that you can do is go back using the left button on the screen. You might also notice the hearts in your top left corner of your screen. These hearts represent the number of lives that you still have. You start out with three hearts and every time you get attacked by a plant or something else like that, you lose a heart and if you use up all three lives you will die and then you will have to restart the whole level. Then, there is also the number over thirty that is near the top right of the screen. This number represents what level you are at. As you beat each level, you will see that number rise closer and closer to thirty. The closer you are to thirty, the harder the game will get and the more tempted you will be to purchase the in-app purchases that the game offers. One of those in-app purchases include more lives as well as unlimited lives meaning that you can continue trying in the game until you beat it. There is no social aspect to this game which means that you pretty much don’t have any kind of communication with the outside world that you are even playing this game, so it’s pretty understandable why it isn’t very popular. The most popular games use Facebook and Twitter to connect their phones to their computers.

If you are playing with limited lives, then you want to make sure that you are thinking about the course and each puzzle before you attempt it. You don’t want to lose lives early because later on it will get harder and you will most likely lose more hearts whenever you try out the later stages. So really, unless you are playing with unlimited lives, you don’t want to play mindlessly and not think about what you are going against whenever you start the level. If you do die, try to remember the course and how you got past each stage of the level so that you can memorize the course and get past those stages without losing a single life on the way.
The goal of Skater Boy is pretty straight forward being that Skater Boy is really only about getting to the end of the course whatever way you can. The game gives you options to purchase multiple lives so that you can pretty play without thinking about it and just try it any way that you want, but that is the super easy way out. If you want more of a challenge, try and get through all 30 levels simply by going through the game with three lives. As you reach higher levels, they will require more thinking in order to not lose hearts.
If you take a faulty step that will screw up your jump, or you see something that you don’t like, then you can hit the left button on the bottom left of your screen so that you can go back a bit with your skateboard so that you aren’t directly going to be facing the obstacle knowing that you can’t get past it.
If you get frustrated from a level, just make sure that you are playing with a cool head. Get off of the game for a bit so that you can come back to the game with a clear head so that you aren’t going to be too distracted from not being able to beat the game and usually you will be able to solve the level without too much trouble.
The graphics of Skater Boy, in my opinion, are really poor and really bad because the game is super pixelated which some people may like, but in my opinion, it makes the game look so bad. I think that they definitely need to improve with that, but it doesn’t look like that is ever going to happen, seeing as how the producer has never even updated the game. You honestly can’t even tell what the little brown things are. I assume they are just rocks or something like that which have a weird silver strip on them. For a game to become successful, the producer has to consistently make changes to the game for the better so that it is more fun to play and you can share the game with your friends.
Along with that, I think that the game needs more levels. Usual games nowadays have over 100 or 400 levels which is much more than 30 and takes a much longer time to complete than Skater Boy. I think that the producer needs to include more levels so that people can actually get addicted to the game. Speaking of getting addicted to the game, if it had a decent storyline, then I would imagine that having thirty levels is okay because you develop the storyline over those thirty levels, but you don’t even have a storyline to follow. It seems like after the producer made the game, he just shoved in on the app store and left it there to collect a bit of money from the game. If you don’t make any updates to the game, no one is going to play it for very long or even download it considering the poor ratings and the low number of reviews that it has.
Skater Boy could definitely be like another flappy bird, but it doesn’t have any of kind of excitement or something that you can brag about. For example, in flappy bird, you could brag about how many little alleyways you made it through, but in this game, you are just bragging about how many levels you got through, which isn’t as significant as the bragging rights of getting a good number for a high score. There is also no social connection to the game so you can’t share it on facebook or post it on twitter or anything like that. Most games that are successful include a way to contact the outside world about your success in the game. Other than that, what is there to say about this game.
In my opinion, it seems like a cop out of Mario because it uses that plant which you can so easily recognize from Mario except that it came out of that green tube. It seems like it is the game, Mario, except with a different character who is riding a skateboard for no apparent reason. I don’t even see the point of putting a skateboard in this game because it wouldn’t make a significant difference due to the fact that you can just make him run and it wouldn’t make a difference in the game.

Artwork
I would give Skater Boy a 1/10. The artwork in Skater Boy is pretty poor with the game pretty much consisting of large pixels the size that you would expect in Minecraft. I personally didn’t like Minecraft so I might be a bit biased in my opinion, but how can you play a game that has 200 pixels on the screen compared the normal amount of pixels. The rocks or whatever those brown and silver things are, are really hard to identify as you can see and they don’t really provide any kind of fun or excitement to the game, but rather just make you wonder what you are playing. The background and the random plant that is hanging from the sky are also pretty poorly drawn and out of place. There won’t be a skater riding in the mountains where they are pretty much just trying to dodge evil obstacles like a plant that is hanging from the sky.
Music and SFX
I would give Skater Boy a 2/10. The game is mutable. Thank goodness because the music was just a repeating soundtrack that was not associated with the type of game that it was and it didn’t really have anything to do with the game. If you could play your own music, that would be fantastic. There is no appeal in this game whether you are looking at the soundtrack or the sound effects. The sound effects are average but seem a bit overexaggerated.
Story and Originality
I would give Skater Boy a 2/10. The storyline in Skater Boy is non-existent. Considering the background that the game provides, which are some random mountains and clouds, it better not have a storyline. The game’s setting is so odd and out of place that I wouldn’t even know what kind of storyline could come out of a random skater who is trying to avoid plants that hang from the sky and little brown things that you have to jump over. I don’t see where the game could possibly go with a story. The game seems decently original because of how poor the game is and how I don’t see how they could copy it off of someone else and be that bad of a game. That said, I do think that they tried to copy a bit off of Mario and his adventures throughout the land to get to Peach. The plants are pretty much the same with the same artwork and the same kind of polka dot style on the plant. The gameplay is also very similar but it really doesn’t seem like a good game even if it did try and copy off of Mario just because it is lacking so many elements that made Mario so successful.
General Gameplay
I would give Skater Boy a 3/10. The simple controls of Skater Boy make the game kind of a little bit simple and not really adding in any features to increase the fun in the gameplay and to change the gameplay like the fire plants in Mario don’t make it for a great game. Skater Boy definitely had potential to be a good and be the next Flappy Bird, but it doesn’t have anything to motivate players to continue playing. They don’t have anything to help compare players against each other, so you are losing out on the competitive nature of people and the lack of competitiveness makes fewer people play the game and fewer people who want to be really good at the game so that they can brag to other people about their high score or something like that. I think that Skater Boy needs to have some other aspects to the game other than having thirty levels that are pretty similar to each other except a bit harder. They need to have some kind of mini game to make the game a bit more fun and not as repetitive. I also think that if the producer stuck with the game instead of bailing out on it after a little while, it would be a more successful game because it would be more fun for players as well as given enough time to be addicting.
Addictiveness
I would give Skater Boy a 5/10. I guess it could be addicting depending on whether you like these kinds of graphics, but even with that, I don’t really see how addicting it is because of the amount of levels that are in this game. There are a ton of levels in other games to make the game more addicting and more fun to play, but this game doesn’t really have it. It only has thirty levels which honestly aren’t that hard. I don’t think that players can get addicted to Skater Boy considering the number of levels that it has, so if it wants to be more addicting, it should simply add a couple more levels. The game promotes itself to be addicting from the first three levels of the game, but I really don’t see how that is possible considering how easy the first three levels are. There is almost no kind of fun action to play in the game like gun fire in a shooting game.
Overall Rating
Overall, I would give Skater Boy a 2/10 because Skater Boy really lacks any kind of neat artwork that makes the game pleasant to look at as well as any decent gameplay that would make the game more fun.
