Pokemon X & Y Guide: How To Catch The Legendaries

We’d all like to collect the Legendaries, but we’ll curb any optimism straight away – without trading you won’t have all the available Legendaries in Pokemon X and Y.

You’ll be able to collect Xerneas in Pokemon X, Yvetal in Pokemon Y and both versions will have access to Zygarde.

Catching Xerneas Or Yveltal In Pokemon X & Y

These are version specific and, as a result, you will only be able to get one or the other depending on the version you have.

They appear as part of the game and will appear in the same room inside Team Flare’s lab. This is your only chance to capture either of these Pokemon in the game, so make sure you save beforehand and avoid killing it.

Xerneas is a Fairy-type Legendary so it is weak to Poison and Steel and takes half damage from Fighting, Bug and Dark Type attacks. It is immune to Dragon.

Yveltal is a Dark/Flying-type Legendary so it is weak to Electric, Ice, Rock and Fairy and takes half damage from Grass, Ghost and Dark-type attacks. It is immune to Ground and Psychic.

If you want to get the other Legendary Pokemon then you will need to trade for it, either with a friend or on the Global Trade Network.

Catching Zygarde & Mewtwo In Pokemon X & Y

Zygarde is available for both versions of Pokemon and isn’t version specific. Zygarde can be found in the Terminus Cave, where he will be found at the end of the cave.

Mewtwo will appear in the Unknown Cave, which can only be accessed after defeating the Elite Four and can be found near the Pokemon Village.

Use Surf to ride the river nearby and locate the Unknown Cave. Here Mewtwo will be inside, waiting to be encountered.

All you need to do is locate them inside their caves, battle them and toss a Pokeball at them.

Zygarde is a Dragon/Ground-type Pokemon and is very weak to Ice-type attacks and weak to Dragon and Fairy-type attacks. It takes half damage from Fire, Poison and Rock and is immune to Electric.

Mewtwo is the same Mewtwo previously seen in the other Pokemon games, but can be Mega Evolved to either Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y, depending on which version of the game you have.

To Mega Evolve you need to upgrade your Mega Ring and then visit the Unknown Cave between 8PM and 9PM to find the Mewtwoite needed to Mega Evolve.

Catching Zapdos, Articudo and Moltres in Pokemon X & Y

The only other Legendaries you can collect in Pokemon X and Y that aren’t the ones associated with the latest game are the Legendary birds.

Depending on which starter Pokemon you picked – Froakie, Chespin or Fennekin – will affect the Legendary bird that appears. The order is this:

  • Pick Froakie and Moltres will appear.
  • Pick Chespin and Articuno will appear.
  • Pick Fennekin and Zapdos will appear.

After defeating the Elite Four your Legendary bird will appear and will roam the world for you to hunt down.

You must use your Pokedex to track the Legendary bird – it will pinpoint which route it is currently on – and will randomly appear when walking around in the grass.

When it does appear it will have it’s own entry animation, so you will know instantly when the Legendary Pokemon has arrived.

You must do this 10 times since it will automatically flee each time. After this has been done the Legendary bird will then appear in the Sea Spirit’s Den where it can be encountered without it escaping.

The remaining two Legendary bird Pokemon won’t be available to you in this game, however you will be able to trade for them.

Getting Other Legendaries In Pokemon X & Y

As already mentioned, you won’t be able to catch any other Legendaries in Pokemon X and Y, which means your only way of collecting them will be through trades with other Pokemon Trainers.

Here’s a tip though: in the cafes across Kalos you’ll be given an option to upgrade your seating, for a fee, to a better tier.

Pay 5,000 Pokedollar to upgrade your seating to the best and there will be an NPC in the next area who will show you a Legendary Pokemon – or at the very least pseudo-Legendaries like Dragonite – which will add it to your Pokedex.

Though this doesn’t mean you can collect the Legendary, it will unlock it for searching on the Global Trade System, accessed from the button at the top of the touch screen.

There’s no guarantee that you will be able to trade for one of these new Pokemon, but you should find someone looking for a new Pokemon in trade for one of these Legendaries.

Note that each of these characters will show you one Pokemon each day, and the more you spend the more likely you are to be shown something not already in your Pokedex.

Alternatively, Pokemon X and Y has included a feature in the GTS (Global Trade System) that allows you to search for specific Pokemon.

If you know the name of the Pokemon you’re after, search the GTS and scroll all the way to the bottom of the alphabet to find the option ‘What Pokemon?’ – type the name in the next screen and click enter and, if there is a possible trade to be made, it will appear on the next GTS screen.
