Top 10 Local Multiplayer Co-op Games to Play With Friends

Multiplayer video games over the past few years have been developed more towards online gameplay. There’s something lost when playing online compared to gathering a bunch of friends and playing a game within the same room.

Luckily if you wish to play some fun local multiplayer video games today, you don’t have to look too far for some incredibly fun video game titles. We selected ten absolutely astonishing video game titles that make for great co-op local multiplayer gameplay.

As always, let us know if we miss a video game title that deserves to be on this list by leaving us a comment down below.

LittleBigPlanet 3

The LittleBigPlanet series has always been a relaxing puzzle-platformer based video game that’s been a joy to play with friends and family.

The storyline for LittleBigPlanet 3 is centered around three evil Titans and a wacky creator known as Newton, who just so happens to threaten the destruction of the world. If the world stands a chance from being subjected to the cruelty of Newton, Sackboy and his friends must work together in order to stop him and the three evil Titans.

Players will have to work together as certain puzzles will require specific characters to complete, meaning that you and your friends will have to decide just what character to use on the various puzzles before being able to progress further within the game.

Additionally, there is a creative mode where players can create their own unique levels and puzzles for others to complete.

TowerFall Ascension

TowerFall Ascension is a game made in mind for local multiplayer. Inspired from the video game Combat, TowerFall Ascension is a fast pace and combat fierce title that is based around archery.

Players are tossed into maps where they must fire upon each other while collecting various power-ups throughout the map. With a limited number of arrows, players can only continue the fight by going around the arena and collecting past arrows shot. Again, this particular video game is made with the expectations of multiplayer rather than going into the game by your lonesome.

Rayman Legends

Rayman is back with Rayman Legends. This time around Rayman and his friends discover mysterious paintings that have transported them into a new mythical world. In order to get home, Rayman and his company of fellow compadres must jump, run, and slap their way through each world.

What makes this a particular fun game for local multiplayer is that Rayman Legends features a four-player co-op. At any point within the game, three other friends can jump into the campaign seamlessly or there’s even a series of different challenge-based modes. To top it off there are plenty of featured Rayman Origins levels with improved visuals.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

Borderlands is a video game best played with friends and while a majority of the video game titles released were for last generation consoles, you can still enjoy some Borderlands goodness on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

2k Games released Borderlands: The Handsome Collection earlier this year which includes Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!. Each title comes with its accompanying downloadable content along with the ability to transfer your Borderlands 2 save data from past generation consoles to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

While it would have been nice to also include the first Borderlands title within the collection, this is one title that’s a nice pickup if you’re planning some local multiplayer gaming.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Halo is a massively popular video game franchise. First released on the original Xbox and Windows PC, the game series is still going strong to this very day. While we’re waiting for Halo 5 to grace us when it finally hits market shelves later this year, catch up on the Halo lore with Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Enjoy local co-op gameplay or even multiplayer competitive gameplay matches as you did when these particular video games first released as this collection pack includes Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2, Halo 3, and lastly Halo 4. A patch has even made the campaign mode of Halo 3: ODST available.

Diablo III

Diablo III marks the return to the hack-and-slash video game series Diablo. Set twenty years after the events of Diablo II, Deckard Cain, and his niece Leah begin to investigate ancient texts within the Tristram Cathedral when a mysterious star strikes down the area leaving a massive crater.

Your role within the game is to investigate the falling star and unlock its mysteries, but, fortunately, you won’t have to do it alone. Diablo III lets players work together and create their own character from one of six available character classes. If you enjoy action RPG’s, epic lore’s and the massive amount of loot to hunt and collect during battles then Diablo III is a must-have.

Helldivers

Helldivers is a Sony exclusive available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and the PlayStation Vita. Set within the future, a specialized combat unit known as the Helldivers are a team sent out to retrieve technology, fight off enemy alien species, along with conducting any other activity that the government feels is important to mankind freedom.

While the game does feature a single player campaign, the development team focused on making a more enjoyable multiplayer aspect feature. Combat is chaotic as friendly fire does play a factor which will mean players will have to carefully plan out their every move and combat strategy.

Battleblock Theater

From the creators of Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers comes Battlebock Theater. For those of you who are looking for a more humorous title to pick up then, we’d have to suggest Battleblock Theater, which is a competitive fighting based video game title.

The story picks up on a cruise ship known as S.S. Friendship that becomes shipwrecked from a heavy storm. Upon waking up from the wreck, our protagonist finds that cat overlords have imprisoned the entire crew of the S.S. Friendship and has pinned them against each other in a fight to the death, all for their amusement. Upon progressing through the game, players are given additional characters to control and fight with.

Magicka 2

Fans of the original Magicka that released back in 2011 will want to pick up Magicka 2. Magicka 2 is a sequel the first title within the series and based around four wizards along with their guide Vlad as they travel to Midgard and rid the world of evil.

Expect the same Magicka fun you come to love with new robes, staves, weapons and spells galore to manipulate and annihilate the enemies that stand in your path. Similar to Helldivers, a video game we featured earlier on this list, Magicka 2 also features friendly fire to which your maneuvers and strikes against the enemy will have to be precise otherwise you may tag some of your friends during combat.

Castle Crashers

Castle Crashers is a rather older title on our list. This 2D arcade adventure can give friends countless hours of hack-and-slash gaming fun as players defend their kingdom and save the princess.

Originally released back in 2008 for the Xbox 360, the game has recently found itself being remastered for gamers to enjoy once again on the Xbox One. Gather your friends for an incredible medieval co-op video game that has so far continued to impress gamers a whole console generation after it was first released.
