The release of Destiny 2.0 reinvigorated the life of the game when it was released last week. Thanks to all new features and changes to the existing game, gamers can truly experience Destiny the way it should have been when it first came out.
Among many of the significant changes it offers are improvements to the bounty system, faction system, user interface, a higher level cap, alterations to existing Exotic weapons, punishments for players who idle or go AFK during Strikes, the ability to skip cutscenes, and an all new Ghost voiced by Nolan North.
With the release of the 2.0 update and the game's first Year Two expansion pack, The Taken King, Destiny veterans who've been out of the game for awhile now will want to keep a few things in mind when getting back into the game ahead of trying out the new expansion content.
With that in mind, we've prepared this guide to get you back into Destiny when you pick up the expansion.
If you've only played Destiny without any of the expansions, then your Guardians are probably lagging way behind everyone else. To get a jump start on The Taken King, be sure to use the one-time character boost on any one of your Guardians, or even a fresh character.
The boost, called the Spark of Light in your inventory, will bump your selected Guardian to level 25 and allow you to instantly access the expansion's content.
If you already have Guardians above level 25, then save it for a new character on a class you haven't yet played.
In Destiny prior to the 2.0 update, players could simply equip Faction gear to earn reputation with their associated Faction. This is no longer the case.
You can now pledge your allegiance to a Faction, and you'll want to do that before you do anything else, especially in the Crucible. Once you pledge, you'll earn both Faction and Crucible/Vanguard reputation at the same time.
If you're reading this before The Taken King is out, you'll want to edge your reputation (meaning building up your rep just short of the next level) and stop there.
Once The Taken King hits, gain those levels and you'll receive packages with all new gear from the expansion.
This tip will not be applicable post-release of The Taken King.
The new expansion will render most of your current gear obsolete. However, this doesn't mean you should dismantle them for parts. The Taken King introduces a new Exotic Blueprint system that allows you to access any Exotic you've ever found, so you'll want to hold onto these items for now. These items will be accessible across your account.
As mentioned, some gear will be getting Year Two upgrades, including these:
With the release of expansion, you'll no longer be earning Vanguard Marks and Crucible Marks separately. They've both been folded into a new form of currency called Legendary Marks. All of your pre-existing marks will be converted automatically into the new currency.
You can spend Legendary Marks at the Cryptarch for Legendary Engrams.
The Gunsmith offers a new reputation system that allows players to purchase Armsday Orders, letting them buy legendary weapons to be delivered in a weekly event every Tuesday called Armsday.
To earn a reputation with the Gunsmith, players can use what Bungie calls field test weapons that the Gunsmith will loan out to players.
Don't waste your Motes of Light or any of your existing planetary materials like Spinmetal and Relic Iron on current Exotics. You'll want to keep a surplus of them to upgrade Exotics in The Taken King, which still require these ingredients.
If you played Destiny way back in the day and are just coming back now, you'll notice an absence of things like Ascendant materials, which are no longer in use. Don't worry about those.
Decode all your existing Legendary Engrams. There's no point in holding onto them because they will not give you Year Two gear. You'll want to do this anyway if you want to complete your collection of Year One exotics.
According to the developers, Xur will sell Legacy Engrams that decode into Year One exotics once The Taken King comes out. That'll be particularly useful for any collectors who want a full list of Exotic Blueprints.
The overhaul of the game's interface comes with some massive improvements to the vault and the addition of a new system of collections.
Vault space has been massively expanded, allowing you to store a lot more items. Weapon space has been doubled, and there is more than double the space for armor.
A new system of collections has been added, allowing you to store emblems, armor shaders, and ships.
As previously mentioned, the game's Exotics will now be sorted in a new Exotic Blueprints collection page, where you can buy copies of weapons and armor you previously found on any character in your account.
Destiny is going to be around for a long while to come, so don't burn yourself out by playing dozens of hours of The Taken King all at once if you aren't up to it. What's the rush? Have fun with the game at your own pace.
