If you’re not really familiar with Marth from Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U (or to a lesser extent, the 3DS) you can get a decent grasp of him with a few walkthroughs; but if you’re looking for kill-tactics and ways to own up on opponents, there are also walkthroughs for that play-style as well.
WobzGames has a basic tutorial you can go through to learn about Marth’s attacks, as well as his “tipping” ability that utilizes the very edge of Marth’s sword to do massive damage. You can check out the video below.
For those who didn’t want the video, Marth’s tip of the sword does way more damage than his close range melee attacks. Fighting at the distance of the tip of Marth’s sword will do maximum damage.
Forward tilt for Marth – especially with the tip of his sword – does massive damage. Down tilt is designed to ledge guard. Marth’s neutral air is also good for the aerial ledge guarding game. You can also use the forward air to force opponents to react or fall.
Marth can start an aerial juggle with a down-throw plus his up-air and up-tilt attacks. If you use Marth’s tipper while aerial juggling with up-air you can get some pretty good kill moves off the up-air.
Marth’s throws are pretty standard-fare – both his forward and back throws are more like setup moves, especially to setup opponents so you can enter ledge-guarding mode.
Marth has a shield-breaking special that can literally break through shields. It’s a great way to take down an opponent’s defense using the neutral smash charge. It can crush through someone’s strategy of constantly shielding.
Now if you’re looking for some serious ways to dish massive damage on a competitive level, Muramishi has a quick minute-long guide showcasing the more advanced tactics for Marth. Check it out below.
If you have proper distance, tipping an opponent with a hopping dive-attack is a great way to start a combo. In fact, a hopping neutral air to down-tilt can send an opponent off the platform in just two hits.
You can also use the diving-hop attack (and if you need help initiating the diving hop, just check it out in a more detailed explanation in the Captain Falcon guide) into an up-air to initiate an aerial combo.
You can also use the diving-hop attack that leads into a grab. From the grab, toss them into the air and then perform another up air to create an air juggle. If they’re above 75%, you can use a tipping up-air or up-smash attack to finish them off.
One of the main focuses of Muramishi’s video is using Marth to setup opponents to fly off the ledge and then go into ledge-guarding mode. Most of Marth’s attacks are two-hit combos and they move opponents away, so if you want to use Marth to ledge guard, he’s actually perfect for this.
Marth is definitely one of the more advanced characters to use. You can’t just hop in and button mash like Diddy Kong or spam combos like Zero Suit Samus. Marth requires time, patience and a heck of a lot of skill.
