When you think of a wet nurse what comes to mind? A young woman willing to help so that a baby can grow? A mother figure who is providing life? Perhaps a huge, six armed, very tall, sword-wielding, demon-like nightmare? Did that last one seem out of place? Well it shouldn’t because that’s exactly what you’re up against in Bloodborne when you meet Mergo’s Wet Nurse. Oh, and in case your wondering, nurturing you is the last thing she has on her mind.
Mergo’s Wet Nurse is a Great One, meaning she’s sort of like a deity in the world of Bloodborne, and resembles the huge beings seen throughout the game such as Amygdala. The only major differences are that she’s shorter, is fully dressed, and wields several powerful swords. This makes her one of the toughest fights in Bloodborne if you don’t know what you’re doing.
Mergo’s Wet Nurse is tough, but that doesn’t mean she’s unbeatable. First thing to know is that she has two phases that she goes in and out of. She is weak against arcane, so Bolt Paper, Tonitrus, Tiny Tonitrus, and Empty Phantasm Shell will prove to be quite useful. In fact Phantasm Shell combined with a very powerful weapon, such as Ludwig’s Holy Blade, will probably be your best move when facing Mergo’s Wet Nurse. A weapon such as that one provides much more reach than Tonitrus which is beneficial considering that getting close to this boss is a shaky endeavor. Oh, also make sure to bring a hefty supply of Blood Vials and any other healing item you may have gotten your hands on. Once you’re ready, head to her domain.
As soon as the fight begins, you will see that Mergo’s Wet Nurse is not afraid to use every single arm she has in order to take you down. She attacks quickly and powerfully, but you can use that to your advantage. Since she tends to use slow and powerful strikes for the most part, she often has a decent window of opportunity for you to do some damage. This doesn’t mean to stick by her side though. Most of her attacks cover a wide range and can hit a hunter from pretty much any direction. Of all of these moves, there are two that you should really keep an eye out for.
The first is when Mergo’s Wet Nurse starts spinning. This is followed by an extremely powerful upwards attack. It can easily remove half or more of your health depending on your vitality so when she starts to twirl, get away quickly. The second is when she crosses all of her arms in front of her chest. When Mergo’s Wet Nurse does this, it means she’s going to do a wide slash attack that starts from the center and spreads outwards until all of her arms are spread. This one is pretty dangerous because if you dodge incorrectly you will still be caught in the devastating blow. So just keep a fairly big distance between you and her once she does this.
Now that you have the two biggest offenders logged into your memory bank, you’re ready to attack. A hunter trying to damage Mergo’s Wet Nurse should always try to position themselves to her side. This makes it easier and quicker to get behind her when she goes to attack. After she swings, get in there, deliver 2-3 hits than immediately distance yourself from the boss. Do Not get greedy whatsoever, even her small attacks do insane amounts of damage, and she is very quick when it comes time for her to counter.
After you relieve Mergo’s Wet Nurse of about 20% of her HP, she will go into her second phase. This is when she summons darkness to fill up the entire fighting area along with a clone of herself that constantly teleports around you. Now the clone can actually be killed in a single hit, but it’s not advised since it really isn’t worth the risk. The darkness lasts for around sixty seconds, and you can easily avoid damage throughout its entirety. Just run around the arena (sticking to the edge) until the phase ends, and make sure not to be locked on to anything so that your movements are easier. Both the darkness and the clone will disappear. Mergo’s Wet Nurse will activate this ability every time you eliminate the same chunk of health, so expect it when she’s at 80%, 60%, 40%, and 20% health.
Once things return to normal go back to your previous attack strategy. Wait for Mergo’s Wet Nurse to do her big attacks then move in for the assault. Activate arcane whenever possible in order to move the fight along. This is a long Boss fight when compared to others in Bloodborne so don’t be alarmed if it seems that the fight is dragging on. It’s better to take this fight slow in order to guarantee victory. Also being calm during the darkness phases is of the utmost importance. Adrenaline, and impatience can kill you.
After a long, well fought battle you claim victory and defeat the nightmare that is Mergo’s Wet Nurse. Upon completion you will earn One Third of Umbilical Cord which is a very important item for all of you completionists out there.
