You can unlock secret stages as you collect more pots of gold. When you are in the world select screen, scroll six spaces to the right and you will find the secret levels. Each 30 pots of gold that you collect unlocks one secret level. There are a total of 10 secret levels in the game.
Sometimes, you will be able to backtrack right at the beginning of the level. When you begin a level, see if you can go back at all. Often there are bonuses back at the beginning, including pots of gold and extra lives.
You may know that your leprechaun can scale walls in order to get to out of reach places. This ability also extends to platforms that are floating in mid air. Try to scale platforms in order to get to out of reach places, or to places that you may have passed by in the beginning. This is a great way to earn pots of gold and keys that you might have missed.
Don’t jump on any enemies that have spikes on their backs or that pop out of the pipes. Jumping on them will cause you to lose a hit point. Instead, throw pinecones at them, because you can defeat any enemy using pinecones.
Hit the rainbow colored blocks any time that you see them. The rainbow blocks are far more likely to contain valuable goods, such as extra lives or extra hit points.
Your hit point meter, which shows up in the upper left corner of the screen as clovers, normally only shows a maximum of three hit points. However, if you already have three hit points, and you collect another clover, you will actually have four hit points, and the hat on your leprechaun’s head will change into a helmet with horns on it. This doesn’t signify any special powers. This only shows that you have four hit points.
Your score carries over from stage to stage as long as you don’t lose all of your lives. For the highest score possible, try to speed run through every stage without losing all of your lives. You can also replay stages over and over in order to rack up insanely high scores.
