Those of you that have either read or seen The Lord of the Rings know how the Battle for Helm’s Deep ends. Yep, the good guys win! So when Turbine announced that they would be adding the epic encounter to the free-to-play roleplaying game, we knew that there was no way players could lose the fight.
Instead, the team behind LotRO decided that the community would have to work really hard to be rewarded with extra special prizes. Here's how the Epic Battles reward system in The Lord of the Rings Online works: The more you participate, the more you get. Simple as that.Do you choose to save the horses or would you rather search the fortress for deadly traps? You could always try to group up with other players to make sure you have time for both, but be careful not to take on too much. It’s not a question of winning or losing, but doing everything you can to stop Saruman's army from attacking.
Each task within Helm’s Deep has a progress bar that fills up as you play through certain steps. Your influence on these quests is measured as merit and there are usually various objectives to every mission. That guarantees that different promotions - Engineers, Officers and Vanguards - have equal chances at getting shiny rewards. At the end of each battle, you gain a medal for your performance that's either bronze, silver, gold or platinum.
If you are unsure about what it is you have to do, just look at the Quest Tracker at the side of your screen. That will give you all the information you need: the medal you are currently trying to unlock, your progress, all possible ways to gain merit and the percentage of what is left to do.
