In response to Ceapy's question, "The dilemma I’m running into at the moment is should I use troop health and defense (since it applies to all troops) gems? Or should I put a specific troop type attack gem and one health/defense gem into each equip? My third gem slot for each [item] is taken up by spring gems (troop attack and march speed) so I prioritized that over all other."
The right gems to select depends on what style of play you want use, ie: tile hitter, rallier, 1v1, castle hitter, pure defensive, trap user, etc. (haha I just made all those names up, but I'm sure you guys understand). So, first you must choose a style or two that you want play and choose gems to support that style.
When I first started playing the game, I chose purely defensive gems (trap attack, troop defense, and troop attack). I was building tons of traps because I had a bunch of spare resources, and I wasn't getting attacked much in the top alliance.
BUT, as I grew in power, a few things started happening that caused me to change gem selection:
Therefore, in all the new gear that I crafted I began placing troop attack, troop defense, and cavalry attack gems. I only embed gems that are level 2, 4, or 6 because that way I'm able to maximize the capability of gem removers.
In regards to you ceapy, I think those "march speed + troop attack" gems are awesome for tile hits.
Hope that helps you decide which gems to embed!

p.s. I recently changed my name because my hero got captured. I was hoping the captor wouldn't recognize me and thus not execute my hero. I was wrong, my hero is dead now. LOL.
