Marvel Puzzle Quest is a puzzle solving game, obvious by its name that uses Marvel heroes as power-ups in your attempt to get the highest score you can through destroying lines of tiles. Rated 4 out of 5 stars by Touch Arcade, and recognized as USA Today’s “10 Great Games”, Marvel Puzzle Quest invites you to use Marvel’s heroes to score more points and destroy your opponent. Being able to make alliances with friends and challenge others is truly why millions of people have already downloaded this game.
The goal of this game is similar to games like Candy Crush where you’re switching the place of one tile with one to the side of it trying to connect lines of three or more of the same tile in order to destroy it and deal damage to the enemy heroes. Whoever drops the opponent’s heroes first, wins. So one of your goals is to score the most points in the game in order to defeat your opponent. Another goal in this game could be simply to collect all of the heroes in the game so that you can get the choice of all the heroes that Marvel has put out.
After downloading this app, signing up is rather easy. Simply sign up using Facebook or your game center id. By signing up with Facebook, you have an easier ability to play with friends and make alliances with them, which will be discussed later in this review.
In Marvel Puzzle Quest, you have three superheroes who you will match up against three super villains. When the match begins, six colors of gems appear on the board. By combining particular colors of gems, your heroes will gain energy based on their affinity of the color. For example, by matching purple gems, Hawkeye gets energy that, if enough can use his special ability known as “Take Aim” that will give an instant critical strike on the next match. Every match that you get will do damage as long as your superhero has an affinity for it, and based on the amount of affinity your hero has on the color, the more damage that your hero will do to the enemy. The strategical factor is immense in whether you win or not.
Marvel Puzzle Quest revolves around making combos and having a good team balance. Your team is made up of three heroes all with different stats. The low health ones is often very strong in terms of their attack. Each hero has a special ability that has to use ability power (AP) that is gained over time as you score more points through making lines of 3 or more. Combining those lines will increase the amount of AP you get. By using a hero’s special ability, the tiles are often changed in your favor so that combos are made much easier. After combining lines of 3 or more together, your heroes get to attack the enemy heroes and do damage to them.
In the adventure part of this game, you get to face super villains of all different sorts from Loki, Magneto, to Dr. Doom. As you go through the levels up to the super villain, you’ll face all sorts of monsters that will help you get experience points to level up your heroes on the way. By leveling your heroes, you’ll be able to kill stronger enemies, get higher stats for your heroes, such as attack and defense, and be able to compete with a strong performance in PvP. Leveling your heroes in this game is extremely important, considering after you face the beginner villains, the villains begin to get harder and harder to the point where you may have to repeat the beginner quests in order to get enough levels to compete in those harder quests.
In game purchases that are readily available include power-ups during battle or getting a second chance in a duel between you and a super villain. These power-ups are extremely helpful in getting you farther in the story mode, but are also extremely costly. The most popular in-game purchases are Agency Expenses, Bugle Pittance, and Logan’s Loonies.

Try to avoid using in game purchases during the game. They do not help very much in the long run. If you have an unlimited amount of money, sure in-game purchases make the game a lot easier, but if you don’t, in the long run, you’ll fall behind and have to rely on in-game purchases to make any real progress in the game. Those who do not use in-game purchases, rely more on leveling their heroes, which is a stronger strategy in the end.
Save your special abilities for the boss at the end. The boss does more damage to your own heroes and stacking all of your special abilities to the end will kill the boss much more quickly.
Don’t be afraid to use a wiki page to help you out and find out what different characters do and what the weaknesses of the enemy are.
Your enemy boss is often weak against one color gem. Abuse that in order to do increasingly more damage to them.
Start with the harder fights first. You’ll get more points per win as you fight harder people, so if you fight the harder people first, you’ll gain more points early.
Join an alliance for extra rewards in the game. By joining an alliance, you allow yourself to be immersed with players similar to yourself.
In PvP, it’s often about who can gather enough energy to get their special first. The person who gets their special first, gets to dish out the damage first that can often kill one of your characters, not allowing them to do any more damage. When the match first loads up, look at the tiles and determine which tile your team needs most in order to start charging energy towards a special ability.
Look what tiles drop where once you get a combo, if you can score another combo after the tiles drop into place, that’ll grant you bonus score and more energy to your heroes. This is a more advanced tactic/cheat that you can use if you’re used to the game.
Team composition, previously discussed a little bit, Marvel Puzzle Quest (and, well the Puzzle Quest series in general) introduces incentives to match particular colors of gems together. Since the starting tiles are random, chances are you’re not going to be able to charge your favorite hero abilities easily. Thus, it helps to have a backup plan. The best thing you can do is having several ways you can earn early power-moves. By going for more than one color, you’ll be able to charge your hero’s power by using different colors.
The most efficient way is to have heroes that cover all the colors so that each combo that you make will charge your heroes. This has the secondary benefit of consistent damage when matching against other players.
Aim for the glass cannons of the other team. A glass cannon is anyone who does not have much health but has a ton of attack. If you let those glass cannons take a shot at you, they will do a ton of damage. Use all of your resources into getting that hero off the board.
Hero Points are good to stockpile so that you can get more slots for different heroes or you can save up for cover packs that’ll help you get an increased chance of getting a cover.
ISO-8 is sometimes good to stockpile. Sometimes you want to put ISO-8 into some cheap levels or temporarily buffed characters, but otherwise you shouldn’t be leveling up heroes that you aren’t going to use in the near future.
Covers are used to grab a hero that you don’t have. Often you want to stockpile these in order to use during an event where you might need heroes you don’t have.
Pick your battles carefully. As you win more in player vs player games, the harder your opponents will be. Choose the events that are worth winning and provide the most rewards. Don’t fight every battle because some fights are just too tough and it’ll cost too much to lose there. Skipping fights is only a small ISO costs so don’t be too worried about that. In the long run, it’ll be worth it. I guarantee it.
Marvel Puzzle Quest’s graphics are not amazing, but it makes up for it through the gameplay. Marvel Puzzle Quest is extremely fun if you have friends who join you on your journey. Marvel Puzzle Quest takes you through memories of watching Marvel movies and actually being able to pick your team of heroes is also a fun aspect. The alliance idea of the game is a nice and fun idea, but not quite fully up to date as other games like Clash of Clans. What makes this game so popular even now is the PvP aspect of it. This game is similar to other games where you get to pick a team and solve puzzles to do damage, but the idea of battling someone who you don’t know bring a bit of a rush more than other games of this game idea. I won’t lie, this game is rather slow if you aren’t spending some money on it, but it is worth it when you get into it. The game is addicting and provides a nice past-time for yourself.
The difficulty of this game comes into play when people get stuck at a certain point where they’re forced into endless hours of leveling their characters instead of making progress. This stopping point in progress is likely where a lot of people would quit.
The advertisements are not as frequent as other games, which makes it a good quality game that doesn’t have a company willing to sacrifice content for money.
The reddit and wiki page for this game are also very active with good answers to common questions and help and support from a good community.
Common complaints of this game are that when people switch devices, all of their progress is gone. This could be a big turn off for those who are looking to have different devices that they want to use or when switching devices.
Artwork:
I give Marvel Puzzle Quest a 3/10 on the artwork because some heroes look really bad. You can almost tell that almost no effort went into the artwork. The animations of the combos aren’t as satisfying as well.
Music & SFX:
4/10 The SFX aren’t that great as mentioned above in the artwork. The music wasn’t that amazing either. I don’t think this app was made to show off the music or anything like that.
Story & Originality
7/10 The story is unique in of itself just because it’s Marvel showing off all of its heroes in an adventure to fight all of the superheroes Marvel has shown throughout the years. The originality of the game isn’t anything we haven’t seen in other games.
General Gameplay
8/10 The idea of a 3vs3 in terms of puzzle solving in order to do damage is always a good setup and provides an ability to showcase your puzzle-solving skills.
Addictiveness
9/10 One of the more addicting games I’ve played. Active PvP and PvE storyline is enough motivation for me to keep playing.
