Detailed Ace Fishing: Wild Catch Review

It took a good ten minutes after installing Ace Fishing: Wild Catch to actually get into the game, which I guess doesn’t seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but a long initial boot time like that just shouldn’t be in AAA mobile releases like Ace Fishing: Wild Catch. And after downloading all the extra components needed (why they weren’t in the initial download is beyond me), I was greeted with not one but two separate pop up ads, one after another. I guess my point about all of this is, Ace Fishing: Wild Catch and I didn’t get off to a good start.

Thankfully, Ace Fishing: Wild Catch saves it with the gameplay. Beginning the tutorial, I was immediately blown away by the graphics, the waves being the most realistic looking I’ve ever seen on touch devices, and hell they’re even better than some console games out there. Totally unexpected right? A fishing game with top of the line graphics. The fish are beautifully rendered with over hundreds of species available, and each fish with differing lengths and weights. After successfully catching a fish, it pops out of the ocean in slow motion, and that’s where you can really appreciate the 3D models. As you watch your catch dangle from the line, water droplets appear on the screen which not only look amazing, but really add to the immersion of Ace Fishing: Wild Catch, and immersion is almost everything in simulation games.

The sound effects are top notch. It’s a nice atmospheric touch to be able to hear the waves breaking and crashing against your boat, seagulls squawking away in the distance as you send your line out. The main menu music, however, leaves a lot to be desired. It’s a high pitched, piano driven piece that sounds like someone imitating Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road theme, but failing to capture any of the interesting melody. Plus, it’s only about 45 seconds long stuck on repeat. No thank you.

I have to throw some criticism to Ace Fishing: Wild Catch’s freemium model; their Monthly Event Package system is absolutely atrocious. Each month there are three different packages (not sure how different they get) that you can buy from the in game store, containing Gold, Item Reset Tickets and Cash. Sure, that’s pretty stock standard for freemium games, but the problems here are firstly, that the main menu proudly proclaims how many “bonus chances” you have to buy the packages (“only five times a month!”), secondly, it pops up every time you select Lets Go Fishing, and thirdly, the prices start at $37.99 (AUD) and go right up to $129.99. That’s ridiculous money to drop on this game, not only are the packages overpriced for what they contain, Ace Fishing Wild Catch tries to pass them off as some sort of one of a kind special deal. It’s money grabbing at its hardest.

If you’re looking for a fun, new mobile fishing simulator I would happily recommend Ace Fishing: Wild Catch to you. It’s got the core gameplay down perfect, it just needs a little more polish in other areas to really shine through. Definitely a solid choice.

Artwork: I give Ace Fishing: Wild Catch a 10/10 for Artwork. I’m not kidding when I say this is one of, if not the best looking mobile game out there, and it’s just so unexpected to come from a fishing simulator. Very impressive.

Music & SFX: I give Ace Fishing: Wild Catch a 9/10 for Music & SFX. Although I previously mentioned the weak music, I feel like the high quality sound effects make up for the cheap sounding menu music. Fishing doesn’t feel like fishing unless you can hear the waves rolling around, and it’s just so high quality it makes me think the developers simply held up a microphone at the beach.

Story & Originality: I give Ace Fishing: Wild Catch a 5/10 for Story & Originality. This is a fishing game, what did you expect? Plot? Originality? Don’t worry, it doesn’t detract from the game.

General Gameplay: I give Ace Fishing: Wild Catch a 9/10 for General Gameplay. The intuitive controls and simplistic fishing system complement each other really well, and there’s enough content here to keep anyone entertained for hours on end.

Addictiveness: I give Ace Fishing: Wild Catch a 9/10 for Addictiveness. The player energy limit is what makes this game addictive. Keeping on top of your energy levels translates into playing short bursts throughout the day, and it becomes hard to ignore the “Your Energy is full. Let’s go fishing!” notification.
