Trial Xtreme 4 Review

On the surface, Trial Xtreme 4 looks like another shallow driving game, or at least it did to me. The generic app icon, combined with a description that uses the word extreme about seven times too many didn’t give me the best impressions. But boy did those screenshots look nice, and I’m glad I gave it a shot.

I’m just going to say it, I had a great time with the game. Trial Xtreme 4 really surprised me with just how solid the gameplay is. The levels in Trial Xtreme 4 have clearly had a lot of work put into them, which is great because you’ll be replaying all of them at least a couple of times to get that three star rating at the end. The first time I played Trial Xtreme 4 was after my girlfriend had played for about an hour. She got frustrated and handed me the iPad with a “try and beat this level”, and boy did I try. And try. Before I knew it, an hour had gone by and I had only gone through a sliver of the content on offer. I was hooked.

Now I don’t want this review to completely gush over the game, even though it definitely could. The sound effects in Trial Xtreme 4 aren’t bad quality sounds I guess, but listening to the same motor revving noise over and over gets tedious, and with no in game music to distract, I found that it got on my nerves quickly.

Another letdown would be the out of races content, like customizing and upgrading. In Trial Xtreme 4, a bike’s performance is rated out of three categories: speed, acceleration and jump. The five upgradable bike parts (engine, wheels, front fork, back fork and body) can only be upgraded from base level one, up to level five. It all just seems a little too simple and linear. I’m surprised they even put the options in to upgrade, considering how much of a chore it is, but I guess putting in more content doesn’t hurt.

Besides these couple points, I’m finding it hard to fault Trial Xtreme 4. It has solid gameplay, it’s well polished, the artwork has a clear consistent theme throughout the game, the menus are easily to navigate, and this all comes without the usual freemium nonsense of hiding game content behind paywalls or forcing you to grind your way to the top. But the bottom line here is Trial Xtreme 4 is just plain fun. Download it, play it, have a blast. I know I did.

Ratings

Artwork: I give Trial Xtreme 4 a 10/10 for Artwork. Other mobile developers should take a look at Trial Xtreme 4 to give them a better idea of what a consistent art style looks like. The menus are sublime, the 3D models look great, nothing much to fault here.

Music and SFX: I give Trial Xtreme 4 a 6/10 for Music and SFX. The menu music is fine, and I like the various sound effects as you navigate through Trial Xtreme 4, but would it have killed them to put in some in game music? Or at least turn down that damn engine.

Story and Originality: I give Trial Xtreme 4 an 8/10 for Story and Originality. The story in Trial Xtreme 4 is a little on the light end, but there’s a truck full of originality. No other driving games on mobile come close to this kind of polish.

General Gameplay: I give Trial Xtreme 4 a 9/10 for General Gameplay. With a series that’s been around this long, you can be sure that the developers have gotten this formula down pat. Trial Xtreme 4 is simple to get into and hard to master, a winning combination.

Addictiveness: I give Trial Xtreme 4 a 9/10 for Addictiveness. There’s just so much content in Trial Xtreme 4 to explore, I had a tough time putting it down that’s for sure. Very addictive game, and the hourly game notifications sure don’t help!
Overall, I give Trial Xtreme 4 a 9/10.
