This company was behind the popular and hit games years ago, Angry Birds, this time they bring to us a vibrant and new summer puzzle game about juice cubes!
Released on October 32, 2013, Juice Cubes was a huge hit to the mobile game market. You are able to play Juice Cubes on both mobile platforms, Android and iOS, it takes around 44mb of space and it is suitable for all ages. In app purchases cost from as low as $1.99 to as high as $112.03 per item, and the current version of this game is 1.25.15, updated on May 3, 2015.
To date, there has been between 10 million to 50 million installs, and more than 268 thousand people have rated Juice Cubes. Juice Cubes has received a 4.1 star rating out of a 5 point star on Google Play Store by over 155 thousands of players. Furthermore, on the iTunes store, it has a 4.5 star rating out of 5 by over 7 thousand people. Even though Juice Cubes is available in English only, the game concept is fairly easy to understand without needing to understand the dialogue. The top in app purchases are all for the premium currency, gold bars. You can get 15 gold bars for $1.99 and as much as 1,300 Gold Bars for $99.99.
Juice Cubes takes place on an island, resembling a beautiful beach. The main objective is to connect three or more juice cubes to clear the level. There are several different types of completing the level’s objective, in the very beginning you will only be asked to connect juice cubes to reach a certain score, for example 1,000 points. As you get further into the game, you will soon be asked to clear the sand behind the juice cubes. Besides scoring a certain amount of points and clearing the sand, you will also be asked to break the ices containing the juice cubes. Juice Cubes offers over 400+ unique levels of puzzle playing, where the main feature is not swiping blocks to connect them, but to draw a line to connect them. This is a great improvement to puzzle games because you can now make many more combinations in a puzzle game. In the older generation of puzzle games, by swiping, the average amount of combinations you can get could would be around 5 to 6. But in this new puzzle game, you are able to connect as much as 10 juice cubes together. It feels very much like tic tac toe!
Upon installing, Juice Cubes you will be asked if you would like to play as a guest or connected to your Facebook. If you connect it to your Facebook, you can experience the leaderboard rankings, sync the game with your friend, and also be the first to receive updates from Rovio Stars Ltd. If you get bored of playing Juice Cubes on your phone, or you ran out of battery, you can switch to your laptop to immediately continue playing. Another good thing about connecting to your Facebook account is that you are able to receive and send lives to your friends. This will speed things up if you are impatient waiting for your lives to refresh. Once you reach level 40 in Juice Cubes, you will need your friends help to send map pieces. If you don’t want to, you can purchase them for $1.99 each.
Juice Cubes displays a very vibrant and summer feel in this game. All the colors are bright and cheerful, making one really want to play this game. Along with the graphics, they also have special fruit combos when you connect 4 or more fruits together! Together, they will help you advance through your level quicker and create special effects that you have never seen before. Some of the special fruits are the “dynamite fruit” and the “fruit bomb”. The dynamite fruit will damage a whole column of fruit once you break it, while the fruit bomb will eliminate a whole area of the fruit grid when matched with a color. Rovio Stars Ltd also offers a premium in game currency, using gold bars. You can either purchase these gold bars in the shop or by earning them via game.
Juice Cubes is a tropical-themed puzzle game from the creators of Angry Birds where you will need to use a lot of gold bars, moves, and lives in order to complete the game. You can purchase gold bars in the app store since this is the premium currency, but this does cost real money, and we all know that doing so can get really expensive.

In Juice Cubes, you are able to connect any of the juice cubes together in anyway. There are several game tips for Juice Cubes. Always try to connect a string of 4 to 7 fruits and they will create a explosive fruit. On the other hand, strings of 8 and more fruits will create the powerful fruit sandwich. In a string of 4 and more fruits, the special fruit you get will always be the last one in the string. You should look at the overall grid before connecting all these fruits!
When you connect a string of 4 to 7 fruits, how you end your string will determine your bomb type. There are three ways of connecting your fruits: horizontally, vertically, and diagonally. When you connect a string of fruits diagonally, the bomb will clear all the immediate adjacent fruit when it is activated. If you end the string of fruits horizontally, the bomb will clear the entire row.
Furthermore, if you end the string of Juice Cubes vertically, the bomb will clear the entire column. If you want to use the fruit sandwich bomb, take note that you should make a string of fruits of the most fruits on the board. This is because when you make a fruit sandwich, it will automatically clear all the same fruit on the screen. Lastly, the final tip would be to connect all the special bombs. Since these special bombs originally all have their own special features, if you combine them together, you will get a bigger effect in the game board.
Rovio Stars Ltd features a very cute and new game of puzzle challenges in Juice Cubes. You are immediately drawn in by the beautiful and clear art when you download this game. The game features different islands, with each different goals and objectives. The artwork in Juice Cubes are vibrant and screams summer, all the fruits are bright colors of green, red, orange, and brown! Plus, all the fruits have faces on them. This seems like a game where Candy Crush meets Fruit Ninja. Candy Crush can be said to be one of the most popular puzzle games of all time, featuring over 500 million downloads, Rovio Stars Ltd tries to overcome the high expectations players now have of puzzle games. Like all games, Juice Cubes has both pro’s and con’s, I will go over both sections in the next paragraph.
I would like to say that the pro’s in Juice Cubes is the artwork, innovative and new puzzle game style, as well as the game concept. In, Juice Cubes, the first thing you notice is the art style. In the game title, you will notice the beach sand along with the creative and unique font. Juice Cubes stays true to its style throughout the game, it keeps the simplistic artwork of the fruits, and also always incorporates the beach, sand, and ocean in its game.
The second pro of Juice Cubes is the innovative puzzle game style. Previous generations of puzzle games only allowed you to play by swiping and switching the different block patterns. In this new generation of puzzle games, you do not need to do that anymore! Simply put your finger on the screen, and connect them! It’s similar to connect the dots, but with a lot more special effects, sound effects, and animations! I would say this makes things easier for a lot of people, because the possibility of connecting a lot of blocks are endless. Also, this ensures that people don’t need as much moves as they do in the previous old generations of puzzle games.
The last pro in Juice Cubes is the game concept. Juice Cubes tries its best to bring the game market a new game. They attract players with the bright and cheerful graphics. The simple gameplay makes it easy for anyone who wants to play, plus many people can get lost in the tropical theme of Juice Cubes!
After we got done with the pros of Juice Cubes, it’s time for the cons. To be honest, there are only several cons. These cons consists of: map pieces, premium currency, and variation in gameplay. Firstly, in Juice Cubes you travel on the map to clear your objectives. However, as soon as you reach level 40 or so, you will be forced to either bug your Facebook friends to send you map pieces, or purchase them yourself for $1.99 a piece. I really wish they included an option similar to Candy Crush, where the tickets you can get without Facebook and you have to wait several days for it. Although Facebook is one of the largest social platforms in today’s society, there is still a small population that does not have Facebook. This is a huge con for them, as well as this is basically forcing players to purchase expensive in app purchases.
Secondly, the premium currency and power ups from the store, does not offer a lot of opportunities for players to earn free gold bars. Gold bars are used to buy a lot of premium power ups, but they are quite expensive. Also, Juice Cubes does not allow you to try the power ups before you get them. In previous games, such as Candy Crush, they introduce to you the power ups and gives you 5 free to play with. Without knowing how useful the powers ups in Juice Cubes, one is reluctant to purchase any for such an expensive price.
Lastly, the variation in Juice Cubes isn’t that high. The game’s objectives and goals are similar and they don’t change much throughout the gameplay, it gets quite boring.
Artwork: 8/10 for Juice Cubes artwork. I really like the theme of this game, it gives a very refreshing feeling. Also, like I said before, I feel like Juice Cubes is trying to compete with Candy Crush by King. Candy Crush uses candies, while Juice Cubes uses fruits. The refreshing art style of Juice Cubes is also shown throughout the gameplay, with the art of the fruits being cute (they have faces), and there color palette for this game matches one another as well. Rovio Stars Ltd uses the color palette of sea blue, sand color, red, green, orange, and more, to constantly bring their players to a paradise island!
Music & SFX: 6/10 for the music. I did not particularly like the music for Juice Cubes because it doesn’t feel as catchy as it should. After several levels of this game, I got quite annoyed with it and wanted to turn it off. That being said, it’s not a particularly bad background music, it’s just not everyone’s cup of tea. The sound effects for Juice Cubes was just like it was for any other games, it delivered its purpose.
Story & Originality: 7/10 for Juice Cubes story and originality. The reason I gave Juice Cubes a rating of 7 stars was because I felt that many ideas came from two game inspirations: Candy Crush and Fruit Ninja. But in today’s market, it is hard to say who “copied” who since oftentimes, it just depends on the game’s other factors, such as artwork and music, to gain more popularity. The storyline for Juice Cubes was fairly simple, while the originality I felt it was lacking.
General Gameplay: 8/10 for the general gameplay. Juice Cubes gameplay was very smooth, and I really enjoyed how I could connect my game to Facebook for computer access. What I didn’t like was how it forces you to purchase map pieces or annoy your friends. Many times, a lot of people only access Facebook for checking the news, so spamming your friends with requests to this game could annoy them.
Addictiveness: 6/10 for Juice Cubes addictiveness. While although Juice Cubes displays the new and innovative style of puzzle games, it lacks in its variety of game objectives and goals. Rovio Stars Ltd could’ve also done a better job at lowering the prices for the premium currency, and allowing players to see what the premium special items does and how to use it before showing it to players. For this reason, I gave Juice Cubes a rating of 6/10.
The overall rating for Juice Cubes is a 7.5/10. Juice Cubes displays a lot of good potential to be one of the best puzzle games in the market, if they fix something’s in the game, they would overcome the popularity of Candy Crush as well. While they lack in variety during gameplay, I think that they did an excellent job in the graphics and also attempting to make the game more fun!
