Upon my immediate surprise of finding a game using Doraemon’s face as the game icon, I was drawn by it. I love Japan culture and games, so I was very excited to play it. My reason for this train of thought is because, oftentimes, game makers just buy the “face” of the icon just because they are popular and has a lot of fanbase. In other words, their game product lacks character and they think that they can earn a lot of money with investing and producing so little ideas. Therefore, my hopes weren’t as high as it should’ve been. Boy was I wrong.

Firstly, Doraemon is cute no matter how you look at it. If the mangaka is right about this, in the near future maybe 40 years from now, there will be robotic cats, and time traveling. How cool would that be? Doraemon Gadget Rush also features the possibilities of Aliens, maybe we will finally discover whether their existence is true or not. Nevertheless, Doraemon Gadget Rush was truly a good game that lived up to Doraemon’s name. Although it is a simple puzzle game, it featured a lot of interesting elements to keep players playing. I really enjoyed the fever mode, because many puzzle games only allow special bonuses after you completed the level goal and or have time left. In Doraemon Gadget Rush, as soon as you fill up the bar for fever mode, you get to experience immediate game score bonuses. This is really good factor because not many games do this.

Besides being immensely involved with Doraemon Gadget Rush, I was also deeply super happy about the game graphics and animation. Oftentimes, when developers buy the license of an icon or figure, they tend to change things up a lot. Sometimes, even to the point where they aren’t recognizable. Animoca stayed true to Doraemon fans, and kept its original appearance. They also featured Doraemon’s friends into the game, while Doraemon is super lovable and lovely; many people are fans of Doraemon’s friends, so it allured all fanbases to Doraemon Gadget Rush. I also think that by introducing this game overseas, it really expanded the Doraemon fanbase further. Many people after seeing the cute Doraemon will be tempted to own backpacks, watches, notebooks, erasers and more of this franchise. It is a good way to introduce Japanese culture without using a lot of money to advertise.

Any game based on or is using an RPG system made a really good choice. This is because they are basing one small mobile device game, into two different game genres: puzzle and RPG. Doraemon Gadget Rush expanded its audience and if in the future they decided to make games for handheld consoles or PC, they will already have fans. The general system of the game interface was easy to use and straight to the point. One will not be confused about how to play Doraemon Gadget Rush because it isn’t complicated at all. That being said, the actual gameplay does require a bit of brain work because you have to think about which characters to use, paired along with the gadgets. These factors made Doraemon Gadget Rush much more interesting than any other puzzle games.

Artwork: 10/10 for Doraemon Gadget Rush’s artwork. This game stayed true to its original character, Doraemon, with its art style. The game artwork wasn’t designed by the original mangaka, so the gadgets and other game interface artwork was all done by another person. This person keeps Doraemon’s style, and also didn’t try to ‘improve’ it in any way.

Music & SFX: 8/10 for music and SFX of Doraemon Gadget Rush. While I didn’t particularly like the music in this game, I did enjoy the SFX while I reached the fever mode during each level. I really liked the exaggerated sounds, and how even without looking, Doraemon Gadget Rush is running smoothly and not lagging or crashing.

Story & Originality: 9/10 for story and originality. Doraemon Gadget Rush story was original and it wasn’t featured on any other episode in its cartoon. I think that it was very smart to use Aliens, gadgets, and his friends in this game to attract a wide variety of audience.

General Gameplay: 8/10 for Doraemon Gadget Rush gameplay. The general gameplay ran smoothly, but sometimes when you play too long, you will notice some slight lag in the music and even in the animation as well. Since this lag is so small, you probably won’t even notice it unless you are using headphones.

Addictiveness: 7/10 for addictiveness. Truth to be told, Doraemon Gadget Rush could only be addicting to the fans in the fan base of Doraemon. Why? Because like many other puzzle games, as you advance through each level you get use to the game format and how it “thinks.” Meaning, you will notice the pattern of the blocks and what is the next challenge you need to complete. If Doraemon Gadget Rush added more features to this game, I think more people will play and enjoy it more.
