AdventureQuest Battlegems is a mobile reworking of Artix’s original PvP game that was available for the Desktop. It was released in March 2014 for iOS 4.5 and up and is currently available on the Apple App store as well as Google Play. Each individual game session requires a unit of energy, you begin with 15 units of energy and as you progress in the Battlegems more and more energy is required to begin a game session. The energy aspect can be a bit frustrating if you enjoy long uninterrupted sessions, however, it can be beneficial to have a forced break from time to time if you find yourself spending too much time in front of the screen.

Battlegems is free to download but if you expire your energy units you can purchase more using real world money. If you purchase the founder package at $9.99 you’ll get unlimited energy as well as some cool perks such as a 30% gold boost throughout the game, a universal key, as well as the DragonKnight Armor set, one of the most advanced armor sets available. Another beneficial cheat, if you encounter a character you can’t defeat, go back in the game and battle a lesser opponent to easily gain points and xp, or you can follow an alternate route and return to your original point.

Review

Thinking myself well beyond my match three days, this game was a pleasant breath of fresh air. The comedy, irony, and sarcasm made it quite the enjoyable pastime. The story line was interesting and the game itself was vibrant and lively.

It’s obvious the developers spared no expense on graphics. The colors are vibrant, colorful, and imbue a sense of lightheartedness present throughout the game.

Music/sound effects 7/10

The music was delightful, albeit a tad reminiscent of many quest based mmorpg’s , nevertheless it added to the overall experience and synchronized well with the motifs and personality of Battlegems.

Story/originality 5/10

As far as the two independent themes of the game are concerned, it wasn’t very original, but combing those themes in a witty, sarcastic, and humorous way was a bold move by the developers. Self-awareness, although an endearing quality, doesn’t detract from the fact that this genre has been done to death. Humor is great for dissipating awkwardness but rather than laughing at themselves the developers could’ve been laughing to the bank had they utilized their creative talents rather than repackage old memes and played out motifs. Nevertheless I’ve never before seen a quest style match three game so kudos for that.

General gameplay 7/10

General gameplay was fun albeit a bit repetitive. Getting to battle friends and coworkers in the PvP mode was probably my favorite aspect of BattleGems. Also, since the game was fairly light and it didn’t overload my hard drive, I experienced very few issues with glitches and crashes.

Addictiveness 8/10

Battlegems was obviously created to appeal to a wide array of audiences, and it’s witty humor combined with its widely popular format both contribute to why the addictiveness metric is probably the strongest one for Battlegems. Although I did find gameplay a bit repetitive, aren’t all addictions repetitive by definition? It’s the need to satisfy the addiction that keeps addicts coming back, and with over 450 quests Battlegems is sure to put a dint in your free time.
