Once the game has started, your car will move forward and speed up on it’s own, without any imput from you. This will continue during the whole race, so you only have to care about turning left and right and sometimes using the brake.

As you progress on the randomly generated race track, you will see the beautiful scenery of the tropical island. You start out on the beach, with beautiful sunshine, sea and mountains on the sides of the track. As you move forward, you will find your way into new areas like caves, the docks, the swamp, the volcano area and even the snowy mountains. Most of these new areas only appear after you have reached a specific distance on the racetrack, so the volcano and snowy areas are very hard to reach for example.

There will be a lot of objects near the road and sometimes in the way as well, including grass shacks, tiki statues, barrels, surfboards, various trees and plants, and live creatures like seagulls, giant crabs, lava monsters and even the yeti!

Most of the time you will want to avoid hitting these objects, even while everything is destructible on the map. You can crash even the huge trees and grass shacks at fast speeds, but running into anything will slow you down, which causes you to lose time. If you run out of time, your car will immediately slow down, until it stops entirely, which is the end of the race. Reaching checkpoints will award you more time, so you can go on.

Is this all Beach Buggy Blitz offers? No, not entirely. You can also customize the game for the cost of gold coins, which can be collected on the racetrack. You can customize various things, starting with your car. There are multiple new cars to purchase in the game with the coins, including rally cars and monster trucks. You can also upgrade each owned car individually, which causes them to perform better and faster. Other than car customization, you also have the option to buy new drivers, but they are all just cosmetic and doesn’t change the gameplay like an upgraded car does.

Probably the most important things you can spend gold on are the powerups though, which you have to unlock by purchasing the first level of each, they will only start appearing during the races after that. These powerups include things like Boost, a powerup that provides you with a short burst of extra speed. Lastly, there is the Checkpoint upgrade, probably one of the most useful upgrades, which gives you +1 second extra time for each checkpoint reached, along with the basic 15 seconds bonus.
All of these powerups and the Checkpoint upgrade can also be leveled up, while each level up costs more and more gold, but they add new bonuses to each. For example the Shield powerup’s level 2 will earn you gold for each object you destroy while it’s active.

The game also allows the player to gather gold by watching ads at the end of each race. You will be shown a little TV icon, where you can choose to watch them. Each ad gives you 200 gold coins and considering the fact that each powerup costs 200 at the first level, it’s a pretty nice amount, especially since you can watch multiple ads in a row. Other than free gold, Beach Buggy Blitz also allows you to watch an ad at the start of races to get +10 seconds starting time.

The second best tip is that you should be very careful of hitting objects on and around the road. They can slow you down to a snail’s pace, if you keep running into everything. You can even get stuck behind a rock, so if that happens use the little reset button on the right side of the screen. This puts you back on the road.

Also remember that there is a brake button on both sides of the bottom of the screen, which you can use to slow down a bit when going very fast and have to pass a huge turn. If you keep going at full speed, you might crash into something and lose speed.

Beach Buggy Blitz was a game which I didn’t really think much of at first, but as I got more and more into it, started race after race, I really got to like it. There is something addicting about the whole build of this game. I always felt like I want to get even further than I did on my last race, because I wanted to experience all the possible areas, like the volcano. Sadly I couldn’t get as far, I’m not even sure how far I need to go to get there, but maybe one day!

When I started out, the controls seemed easy even at first sight, but keep in mind that I choose to use the tap controls instead of tilting. My first race didn’t last long, but along with the tutorials, it helped me understand what the game is about. The game even showed me how to upgrade things and told me how important that is. It’s truly a nice tutorial the developers got going here.

Soon after my first few races, I started buying powerups and upgrading my car, which really makes a big difference. Suddenly I could easily reach new areas like the swamp and docks, while being able to keep my speed up during most of the race. Even while I did well on most races, there was still a lot of challenge thanks to the unpredictable, random layouts of the map.

As for the cost of upgrades and new cars, drivers, it’s mostly fair, considering you can get 200 gold for each ad you watch. I used this opportunity a lot, since each ad only lasted 30 seconds, which is not a terrible trade for 200 gold. I basically watched one ad for each powerup’s first level, as they cost 200 each. Higher levels of them will be harder to buy this way, but I still found this to be a fair business model, especially since there were no obstructing and annoying ads anywhere else in the game. I also liked the fact that I could get +10 seconds for each race for watching a short ad, especially since it’s a choice, you are not forced to do so.

Overall I enjoyed Beach Buggy Blitz a lot. It’s a game that I can imagine myself playing again and can recommend to everyone to try out!

Artwork: I give the artwork of Beach Buggy Blitz a 8/10. The game looks good and the overall aesthetic is well done. The little details all around the game’s roads are also pretty well thought out.

Music & SFX: The music gets a 8/10 as well. I have actually enjoyed the music in this game a lot and it made me more pumped during the races. It’s a good choice both in the menu and during the race. The SFX is also great, especially the sounds of destruction your car can cause.

Story & Originality: The story deserves a 7/10. While the game doesn’t actually feature a real story, the whole idea of exploring the tropical island, while trying to get as far as possible in a race is original enough for me to like.

General Gameplay: I give the general gameplay a 8/10. It’s very fun and challenging at the same time. You have to be careful not to hit objects and meanwhile keep your speed at the highest possible limit to be successful. The overall look of the game and the upgrades, powerups also greatly help the enjoyment.

Addictiveness: The game’s addictiveness gets a 9/10. It’s a very addicting game for sure. You can always try to beat your highscore and get even further, or just try to explore every possible area type in the game. The unlockable characters, cars and the purchasable upgrades also make you go back to this game time after time.
