During a battle, you will see the characters in your fellowship standing on one side and the enemy team on the other side. You cannot really do anything during a battle, but hope that your characters are stronger than the enemy. Characters have star ratings, and the more stars they have, the better they are. At the beginning, enemies will usually have one or two stars, making them very weak and easy to take down. Before a battle starts, you will see the total amount of health points of both your fellowship and the enemy group, and both ranks. These stats will allow you to decide if you want to battle the enemies or you want to retreat.
There are two very important aspects in Lord of the Rings: Legends. The first one is called Stamina and the second one is called Energy. Stamina is used to progress through quests and each step you take consumes a set amount. Your stamina will replenish itself by one unit every minute. Energy is used to engage in battles during your quests. The amount of Energy that gets consumed equals the total Energy cost of all the Heroes, currently active in your fellowship. Your energy replenishes itself by one unit every minute. You will need both Stamina and Energy in order to be able to play Lord of the Rings: Legends.
Playing Lord of the Rings: Legends does not require you to log in with any form of social media accounts. You will be able to change your name, by going on your profile. You will also be able to change the realm you are currently in. Realms are servers of Lord of the Rings: Legends, and there are a total of forty-eight of them. If you wish to play with your friends, you can switch to each other’s realms. At your profile screen, you will also be able to see several statistics such as; the amount of Boss Wins, Longest Streak, Unique Heroes Collected and your Fellowship Rank.
The developers of Lord of the Rings: Legends have implemented a reward system, which will send you rewards to your inventory when you play the game. The rewards that you receive will progressively get better, the more you log in and collect them. You will not only receive boosters, but also characters. A positive aspect about Lord of the Rings: Legends is that it is based off of The Lord of the Rings, which a lot of people really like, including myself.
The developers have implemented a lot of characters and areas, which are also included in the movies. The graphics and soundtracks are pretty decent and it is very nice that you can play the game with your friends or other players around the world. There is a nice chat feature in the game, which you can use to send messages to other players. The developers of Lord of the Rings: Legends have done a lot of things pretty well, but unfortunately there are also several negative aspects about the game.
For starters, the game is littered with advertisements. The advertisements come in the form of banners and pop-ups, which are very annoying and obstructive. It is understandable that developers of free-to-play games implement ads into their games, because they need to generate an income for themselves. The problem is that pop-up advertisements in Lord of the Rings: Legends show up exactly when you are about to tap on the screen. This makes it feel like the developers did that on purpose, so you accidently tap on the ad. The annoying part about this is that it will minimalize your game and open up your browser, which is very obstructive to the gameplay of the game.
The second negative aspect about Lord of the Rings: Legends is the fact that the developers have decided to implement an energy and stamina bar into the game. For each level that you play, you will lose a certain amount of Stamina and Energy, which means that when both of your bars are empty, you cannot play anymore. Both the Energy and Stamina bar replenishes themselves with one unit per minute, but this means that you need to wait up to two hours to have full bars and be able to play again. Such limitations are a turn off in my opinion and developers should try to avoid implementing them.
Artwork: I give Lord of the Rings: Legends a 7/10 for its artwork. The graphics in Lord of the Rings: Legends are pretty decent for a mobile game, but I feel like the developers really slacked when it comes to the animations during the gameplay. It is nice to see that there are many different areas which you can explore, but the battles really lack the animations that it needs to make it exciting, in my opinion. During battles, your characters and the enemy characters are nothing but stills of actual characters of the movies. They do not move or swing their swords, in fact, the only kind of animations you will see is the amount of damage you do to your enemies. If the developers spend more time enhancing the graphics and animations of Lord of the Rings: Legends, it would be a much better game and more enjoyable and entertaining to play.
Music & SFX: I give Lord of the Rings: Legends a 7/10 for its music and SFX. There are several different soundtracks and sound effects in Lord of the Rings: Legends, giving the gameplay a livelier feeling than without. The soundtracks sound similar to the music which you would hear in the Lord of the Rings movies, which is a nice touch. There are also several sound effects in the game, which are easy on the ears and will keep players from getting bored easily. Unfortunately, the sound quality of both the soundtracks and the sound effects were pretty low, making me think that the developers just rushed with the music and SFX.
Story & Originality: I give Lord of the Rings: Legends a 7/10 for its story and originality. There are a lot of Lord of the Rings games out on the app stores, and even though that Lord of the Rings: Legends is pretty original it its gameplay, I have seen the same game mechanics being used over and over again. Game developer Kabam has a thing of its premium currency called Mithril and they always use the same game mechanics for all of their games. This makes the gameplay pretty boring and cannot use many of the games features without purchasing Mithril with real money. Fortunately, there is a story in the gameplay, which makes the gameplay a bit more enjoyable and entertaining.
General Gameplay: I give Lord of the Rings: Legends an 8/10 for general gameplay. There is a nicely build tutorial at the beginning of Lord of the Rings: Legends, which teaches you how to properly play and get a grip of the game. After the tutorial ends, the gameplay becomes pretty straightforward but luckily the world map is huge with a lot of areas for you and your fellowship to explore. There are also other game modes which you can play and the game is multiplayer, which can lead to many hours of entertaining gameplay.
Addictiveness: I give Lord of the Rings: Legends a 6/10 for addictiveness. The developers of Lord of the Rings: Legends decided to implement an Energy and Stamina system, which both really limit the amount of play time you can have in one sitting. You need both Energy and Stamina to explore areas and battle against groups of enemies. This means that you will have to wait for your Energy and Stamina bar to replenish itself, before you are able to play some more Lord of the Rings: Legends. In my opinion, developers should never implement such limitations into their games because they can be a real turn off for many players and lowers the addictiveness.
All things considered, I give Lord of the Rings: Legends a 7/10.
