One place where Google Play Store isn’t lacking is enormous endless running games. Temple Run, Jetpack Joyride, Subway Surfers and hundreds of them following the same pattern. These weren’t enough when developers, trying to get themselves into mobile market, started porting their classic titles. Sonic Dash is an example of a successful classic title, Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s not the first time that developers have tried to bring Lara Croft back to life but why another endless runner? While whole App store is flooded with them, why another one instead of porting proper game like Tomb Raider: Anniversary? Developers gave answers to these questions through the game beautifully.

Lara Croft: Relic Run is developed by Simutronics and distributed by Square Enix Ltd. This game is available for Android, Windows Phone and iOS devices. At first glance this game does look like Temple run except that there are three lanes as in Subway Surfers rather than one, otherwise game’s map and feel is based upon historical place, you will swipe your fingers sideways to strafe, swipe up to jump and swipe down to slide, there are obstacle which you need to avoid. Initially, looked nothing new but this game turned out to be a lot more than that, all what was required was survival of few minutes to uncover whole bunch of surprises that will change your mentality towards runners. Let’s check how Lara Croft: Relic Run is different.

The biggest difference that lies between the rest of runners and Relic Run is that this one finally has a story. The game takes off with intro, in which you will read Lara’s diary. The story, as per her diary, is that Lara’s colleague Carter Bell goes missing somewhere in South-East Asia, the only trails which Lara have to track him down are Relics. He also left down a diary indicating how dangerous roads can be. Now Lara’s purpose is to track down these relics to find out what happened to Carter.
Normally all endless runners contains a single randomly generated map, but again Relic Run stands out in this regard. There are three maps to give a unique touch to our exploration, which are Jungle Temple, Desert Ruins and Mountain Pass. You will start of your expedition at Jungle Temple, there are twenty relic to be found in this map. You will require at least fifteen of them to unlock second map, Desert Ruins, or alternatively you can use five hundred gems to unlock it. The last map is yet under development and most probably will be added via an update.

To find the relics you have to fill a bar, which will be visible on top left corner. To fill the bar you have to collect tools and objects used by an archaeologist such as maps, binoculars, magnifiers and other scattered items as you run your way. Once the bar is full, you will find your next relic within the short range but sometimes, due to game’s geometry, it can be tricky to spot the relic. Once you have gathered fifteen of them Desert Ruins will be unlocked with further clues.

Another twist which Relic Run adds is the combat mode. This mode is something which I never imagined will be a part of runners. Normally, in runners, there is someone chasing you. In relic run no one is chasing but it doesn’t mean that you are alone. On your way you will face different enemies for a time and when this happens Lara will pull out her gun and a health bar will appear. Enemies will attack and hurt you, you have to shoot at them, by touching them, and also dodge their attacks simultaneously. To assist you there will be oil barrels which will explode if shot, and if you are low own health you can also shoot health crates. The length of these enemies-facing-tracks increases as you travel deeper into the map.

Will you be surprised if I say that there is a boss too? You have to be!!! because it’s not something that we normally see in a runner. If you have travelled the rails long enough, you will face map’s boss. In Jungle Temple you will face T-Rex dinosaur!! You have to avoid hurdles even more carefully, you can also choose to attack but only if you have upgraded weaponry and if you don’t then you’ll miss the boss after a period. If you are lucky then you might get a chance to ride it too! Isn’t it cool? If you think that’s all then again you’re mistaken. There are bikes and ATVs to give you a decent hell’s ride. Controls doesn’t change but the gameplay speed increases and scenery changes to even better. I think I forgot to mention about the swinging ropes. This game isn’t just about running down a road but will also run and jump parallel to walls using rope. Controls switches over here and sideways will make her jump, while up and down will make her change lanes.

With all these new additions, there are few common things that will always remain by its side. This game has two currencies named gold coins and gems. Most of the things are purchased by gold and another good thing about Relic Run is that getting gold coins isn’t tough, you’ll find plenty of them on your way. Gems are rare but you’ll hardly need them. Like rest of the runners, this one also has a store and a similar one. There are three sections, the first one gives you general upgrades which includes the following

Resurrection Ankh: It’s a single-use item and gives an additional life to Lara, so that she can complete her task.

Kevlar Vest: As its name suggests, it absorbs the damage while you are fighting enemies.

Extra Clip: It gives additional ammo so that you won’t face shortage on longer runs.

Steel Toe Inserts: When Lara stumbles, it helps to stabilize her quickly.

Medipack: It recovers fifty percent of Lara’s health when she is about to go down.

Onyx Turtle Charm: This one too can be used once. It helps Lara by canceling any friendly curse as she makes expedition.

Coin Trails: It increases the frequency of coin’s appearance and more valuable coins appears. There are three levels you can upgrade to.

Coin Magnet: Coins magnets attracts the coins towards Lara, so that she can collect them without hassle of movement. Upgrading this will increase the limited duration of magnet, there are also three possible upgradable levels.

Clue Booster: It makes the appearance of tools and objects, required to fill bar, more frequent but for a limited time. Upgrading this will increases time and again there are three levels to pay for.

Ammo Cache: Upgrading this will increase the ammo that you get after blasting ammo crates.

Powerups: Upgrading this will make the appearance of all powerups more frequent. Again there are three levels you can upgrade to.

Next section is of weapons. There are six different weapons to choose from. All of them are purchased using gold coins (makes me happy). They start from dual pistols till Grenade Launcher. I still wonder, how can she run that long while holding Grenade Launcher? Third section contains four outfits. You already own the first one and can update it using gold coins and for rest three you need gems to buy and upgrade. Every outfit gives unique advantages.

Relic Run is currently sitting at version 3.1.3. It requires a device with at least iOS 7.0, Android 2.3 (gingerbread) and any Windows Phone 8 with at least one gigabyte of ram. On paper, it does looks that many devices can run it but this is a graphic intensive game and requires a decent device. This game also supports online data saving hence can be synced with Google Play Store and Facebook. There are also forty-Eight achievements, unlocking them will give you additional gold coins. It also support leaderboards so that you can compare your score and check your rank against thousands of people around the world. This game also integrates a fun factor, using Facebook you cannot only challenge your friends but also give them a difficult time by sending game curses like distorted vision and these aren’t for free, you have to pay gold coins for them.

This game is free-to-play but also features in-app-purchases. At normal game pace you will not at all need them but if you’re looking for a boost you can pick gold coins, gems and even weaponry via different packages. Lara Croft Relic Run Review

This game is perfect example of how the endless runners should be, and something the developers should have done long time ago. From top till bottom the game is well polished. The user interface of the menu might not seem attractive at first, that doesn’t means that it’s not good, but whole scenario changes as you tap the screen to start the game. The artwork is top notch everything is beautifully detailed, from enemy Lizards till leafs shows that this game was designed to impress. You will admire the slow-motion effect the game uses and even the after falling-from-bike time is something to talk about. The controls are easy and common ones, you will get used to them within no time but the game in itself is difficult to play as compared to other endless we have seen. I don’t know if you have noticed or not but there aren’t any energy bar hence no waiting, there weren’t any ads issues, and also that the gold coins are plenty too which means you don’t have to spend your real currency.

The games who features these positive things, most probably, lacks at gameplay but let me assure you that it’s not the case here. The gameplay is extremely addictive once you get hold of it, whenever I restarted the run I was always surprised because the game always had something new to offer, i.e. new combat mode, wall swinging using rope, ATVs and how can we forget the boss. The shifting and tilting of camera for different obstacles changes the way you look at them thus giving a different feeling. The background music and overall all the sound effects perfectly matches the theme of game and gives you the best of a runners could ever offer.

There are only three issues which I faced. First one is about the difficulty of the game, it’s not your regular Temple Run, and it requires a lot of patience and practice if you want to reach those boss levels. The second issue is that sometimes graphics feels overly done making it difficult to recognize lanes of the road and sometimes you won’t even know when the path changes. Third one is that there were moments when I faced touch response issues and I lost good score. These issues aren’t any overwhelming and you will get used to them within an hour or two. Once you’re good with the controls, game wouldn’t take much time to end as it’s not lengthy.

With all these good things developers have done, especially not enforcing us towards in-app purchases, they’ve won my heart. I always liked Tom Raider series and this Relic Run isn’t any exception. I’ve already become a follower of this game and I’m waiting for the third map to be added. Despite being a free-to-play, this game has all the essentials required and I’ll recommend it to anyone. No doubt Temple Run might be the inventor of this genre but Lara Croft: Relic Run nailed it. You cannot say that rest of the first-person-shooters are copying Wolfenstein 3D because it was the first FPS ever game made! or can you?

Artwork: I’ll give Relic Run an 8.5/10. This is my favorite section and the one word which perfectly define the graphics is “awesome”. Everything is brilliantly detailed. The colors, lightning and everything adds up and gives you the feeling of ‘being lost’. Animations and transition from different modes are sweet and smooth. Even leafs moves when you pass through them. Without any second thought I’ll say Lara Croft: Relic Run has the best graphics that a runner could offer.

Music & SFX: Relic Run scores an 8/10 for music and SFX it has to offer. Just like graphics, in this department too, Relic Run leaves impressive footprints. The music is catchy and varies consistently, doesn’t at all feels repetitive. It perfectly follows the theme of mysterious set up of Relic Run and adds further depth and feel to the game.

Story and Originality: I’ll give this game a 7.5/10 in this section. I had reviewed many endless runners and almost all of them lacked in this region. This game features a proper story of finding a lost colleague which might not appeal to few but again it something new to this genre and believe me that it’s the highest score I’ve given to a game of this genre for story.

General Gameplay: I’ll give Lara Croft: Relic Run a 9/10 for the experience it provides. Finally an endless runner which did something new, rather than just running down the road and strafe to avoid collisions. Every time you will start the game you’ll encounter something which you haven’t done before. Inclusion of Swinging ropes, Combat mode and boss just takes it to whole next level.

Addictiveness: Relic Runs stays behind its average score by getting a 7/10 here. It’s slightly below from its average because of few minor issues that I’ve mentioned previously. Although to encounter the difficulty this game does gives free daily gift which always includes varying number Resurrection Ankh and once you get hold of the game these issues will not bother you; hence I’ll keep this game in my device to kill my subway time.

Overall I’ll give Lara Croft: Relic Run an 8.5/10 because this game deserves it.
