Boonie Planet, one of the many in the Boonie franchise by MovieStarPlanet Apps, has you create and customize your own family of Boonies and use them to fight other enemies. It is currently available on the App Store, Google Play Store, and online if you wish to play on a laptop or desktop. Although the game is free, there are in-app purchases you can buy, but you can joy the game just fine without them.
The game starts immediately with you creating your own Boonie avatar. You can customize your Boonie’s hair, fur, eyes, and facial features. There are roughly 5 or 6 choices for each and about 12 colors to choose for each item. After that, if you are a returning Boonie player, you can simply log-in and pick up where you left off. If it is your first time playing, you must create an account. It’s a simple username and password system, so there is no hassle to enter and email and follow a confirmation link. Then you can start actually playing. Get it on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store now.
At the menu, there are 5 sections to explore. The first is the Family section, where you create the first Boonie to add to your family. There will be three choices of eggs, and you choose one to hatch. It really does not matter which one you end up choosing, since the attacks for each are the same. After choosing, you can name and customize your new Boonie at the Family section. The second section is the Captain section, where you can edit you original avatar with clothes or other unlocks. The third section, the Shop, is where you can buy clothes and other cosmetics for you Boonie. You can either use coins (new users start with 100) or crystals. Coins are earned in game, but crystals are only obtained by buying them with real money. Although crystals can help you unlock items faster then usual, if you spend enough time in game, you can easily get coins. The fourth section is the chat section, where you can go to the Forest or City to chat online with other Boonies. There is not much else to do there, but can be a way to connect with other players and discuss the game.
The fifth and final section is the main game of Boonie Planet, the Game section. You go from level to level using your Boonies to fight enemies. The fighting style is turn based attack, similar to Pokemon, except there are only two attack options: standard attack and your special attack. The basic attack is exactly what it sounds like, it deals damage to the enemy. The Special attack deals more damage, but needs time to recharge before using it. Each Boonie’s attacks are exactly the same, except for the item of the special attack (for me it was either a cheese attack or a cake attack). The lack of varying attacks makes the main aspect of the game seem repetitive and boring. You press the basic attack button, deal damage, take damage from the enemy’s attack, then repeat. You will occasionally get your special attack, but other than that the fights are nothing but a way to earn coins. You can also fight other NPC Boonies and add them to your Family, but there is really no other reason to play than earning coins. Although this is a game aimed at children, I would expect some more strategy when creating a strategy-fighting game.

If you do decide to carry on with the game, there are a couple ways to earn coins. The main game rewards a great amount of coins. Although it is repetitive, it’s a great way to earn coins, unlock clothes, and gain Boonies for you Family. You can also breeze through the maps pretty quickly, so this will probably your main way to gain coins. There is also the Care option in the Family section that has you give treats and toys to your Boonies, and in exchange you get coins. There is not too many coins to be earned through this method, but every little bit matters.
Another way to get items quickly is by using crystals. If you really want an item from the shop, and you want it now, you can use real money to purchase crystals. Most items cost about 5 or 10 crystals, and you can easily buy a pack of 40 crystals for $3.99. That rounds out to about $1 for a clothing item. Honestly, this seems to very little reward for the money you are spending, but if you really need an item, that option is there.
There are also VIP packs you can buy that grant you crystals, coins, and other bonuses. These packs range from VIP, to Elite VIP, to Star VIP. Each category also has different sized packs to purchase, organized by how long each pack should last. The minimum is a 1 week pack, with the maximum being a 1 year pack. These are also not really worth the money you are putting in (especially the 1 year packs that cost around $50). This is a fast way to get items and unlocks to customize your Boonies, but is not as effective as just earning coins for free.
Overall, Boonie Planet is a fun family friendly game with a very fun customization aspect. There are some pretty great items and clothes to you unlock to really make your Boonies stand out. You can also have several Boonies, which makes for more customizing opportunities and even matching outfits. You can also chat with other players and show off your unlocks, all the while discussing the game and anything else you want. That being said, the main aspect of the game is lacking, boring, and feels lazy on the designer’s side. It’s repetitive and doesn’t seem as if it belongs in the game at all. If you do decide to get this game, think of it as just an easy way to get coins to buy things.

Artwork:
I would give Boonie Planet a 10/10 on the artwork.
The artwork for boonie planet is excellent. Now it looks like Boonies are the pets from Movie Star Planet so obviously there is going to be some resemblance and there would be a bit of the visual representation already set up for them. It is pretty cool that they were brought to life and the fact that you can actually play as them is also very cool. The customization is a fairly cool feature as well, as it shows how much different your Boonie can look from all the other Boonies even though the game looks incredibly simple. Also no matter what combination you use to customize your Boonie, no matter how hard you try to make it look bad it will never look bad! This is also great because it shows that the game developers care about how their community makes their Boonies and want them to never look bad.
Music and Sound effects:
I would give Boonie Planet a 10/10 for the music and the sound effects.
The music and sound effects compliment this game quite nicely. The style of music contributes effectively with the style and pace of the game. The sound effects also give the same effect to the game and contributes to it more than you would expect from sound effects in a mobile games. Sometimes the sound effects will only compliment the game, but these sound effects add another level of immersion to the experience.
Story and Originality:
I would give Boonie Planet an 8/10 for the story line and for the originality. The storyline is a 9/10 as it is an interesting concept for the story, but this is only a 6/10 for the originality. There are many games that have the idea of buying and raising your own cute little furry things on a setting. The only reason that this game recieves such the decently high score of 6, is because of the unique fighting style that the game incorporates. I have never seen a game that has fighting in such a unique way, let alone having multiple furries in your capabilities. The fact that you gain more to train and play with by fighting is even uniquer.
General Game play:
I would give Boonie Planet a 9/10 for the game play.
The first part of the game play is a bit of a put off to the game. When I download a game I want all of the files to be there and ready to play. I don’t want to haveto wait for the game to have to “download graphics” as soon I go to start the game. If the game has been downloaded I expect that the correct game files required to play the game will have been downloaded when I clicked the install app button. The character customization was a nice touch as it gave you that nice personal touch to your little Boonie. As mentioned previously, the fact that pretty much no matter how you customized your character it was impossible to make it look bad.
As someone who doesn’t thrive making their own characters this is a great feature as you don’t really feel like you can make mistakes while making the character. The colour palette on the character customization was also a nice and creative touch which gave just even more of that little customization touch. When you get to the main game screen it’s cool to see the different houses and how they’re built along with what different stuff there is in the game. The egg portion of the game was also cool as it gave even more to the customization of the game, which is a huge part in the game play and probably one of the biggest selling points of it.
The challenge game is pretty interesting as it is sort of like fighting an enemy, except for the fact that instead of trying to battle with it to the death, you are trying to love it (and tickling it) which is a battle of both parties involved. It certainly caters to the target audience which may not neccesarily want the battle scenes but this way still gives a bit of a battle scene but in the cute little Boonie way. The money popping out of the opponent is also an interesting touch to add to it and it certainly makes the user touch the screen a bit more, and become a bit more involved with those scenes. It’s also cool that some of the Boonies that you beat (in the intense fighting scenes) you can actually take them and rename them to become part of your own team. It’s also cool that you can almost immediately take your renamed Boonie into “battle” with other boonies in the challenge field.
Something else that is cool about the fight scenes is that you can actually throw fruit at the other character and it’s still a happy thing and the fact that your opponent can throw stuff like cookies at you. It makes you wonder about how many items that can actually be thrown at others and if the items will change when you get to the later stages in the game. The “death” scenes are also well done in the fact that your team doesn’t actually die and it just takes a bit of time for their health to regen in order to beat the person that they just lost to. When you get up to more and more Boonies on your team it can begin to feel a bit like pokemon except a more simplified version of it.
Something else that is interesting is the fact that there is the gems at the end of some battles, which when you collect it it shows you that there are 6 in total and when you unlock all 6 of them they will allow you to challenge the boss that was unlocked, which will undoubtedly be a difficult fight. The microtransactions are also interesting in the game as it gives you the option to buy more chests for the specific amounts of the currency which is going to guarantee give you a gem which is part of the 6 piece puzzle for the next boss. At the start of the game, it feels like this game is all about the weird fighting mood even though it might not necessarily be about that, it could quite potentially be a turn off for the target audience of the younger pre-teen girls.
Something that is kind of annoying about this game though, is the fact that even though my device that I was playing on was listed as available to run the game, it would consistently crash when I would attempt to play for any period of time. While playing this game I realized that is had no advertisments that woukd shw up while I was playing the game. While this is nice that there is nothing intruding it is also sort of bad idea for the company as they miss out on that extra free revenue. If they wanted to put in ads they could put them in after the fight scenes so that it is only an extra two presses on the screen to get past the ads. It is nice to know that the company will still be making money off of this game because of the microtransactions in the game which can be quite popular.
Addictiveness:
I would give Boonie Planet a 10/10 on addictiveness.
As this game requires little to no time to play and requires no upkeep (long time commitment) it can be a quite good game to become addicted to. If you are waiting for a friend or for a taxi this would be an ideal game to play as it requires < 5 minutes to play and you can complete tasks within the game in a small amount of time which is prefect for today’s world. Also with the micro transactions you can play for incredibly long without putting down as you can just speed your characters health back to full when needed with a little extra purchase.
Overall rating:
Overall, I would give Boonie Planet an 8/10.
It is an incredibly fun game which can be quite excellent if you manage to get yourself into the mindset the game. The biggest challenge that this game will face is that it would really need to set itself apart from the other games like this. Now it does sort of do that when introducing the unique fighting experience, but that is only a minimal aspect. The biggest thing that this game has going for it is the fact that it was made by a quite reputable which is the same one that made the popular Movie Star Planet. Overall this game could just use a little more in the way of originality and having everything downloaded after you download it. The best thing about it though is the incredibly furry animals that you just want to hug and cuddle because they look so darn cute!
