What if I told you that gaining ultimate control over a whole world is possible? What if you got to take part in the world of Block Story? Helpful allies, creatures of fantasy, colorful landscapes and a roleplaying experience await you! Destroy blocks and build your dream house or hideout, complete quests and aim for glory!

Block Story is a roleplaying game set in a block based world, created by the developer Mindblocks. Their only games are Block Story and its premium version, so the dev’s ability to create an unforgettable experience will be judged entirely in this title.

Block Story has a 4.2/5 stars rating on the Google Play Store, while the Apple App Store‘s lite version only has 4/5 stars. Some players are disappointed, but overall most seem to be liking the game on both systems. Today we will take a look at it first hand, so you can make a smart decision on whether or not it’s worth your time.

Block Story might seem very similar to Minecraft on first sight, and you are not wrong to think that. The design is definitely borrowed from there, except that only the world is made up of blocks, characters and enemies are fully detailed and not block based.

So what does the game offer anyway, other than its blocky design? Its gameplay is spread over three different game modes, which I will cover, starting with the Story mode. Story mode is the main focus of this title, where most of the action happens. In this mode you have a randomly generated world made just for you, where you have to level up, survive monster attacks, complete quests, then build your own empire.

The Story places you in your new world, where you are met by The Wizard. This powerful character is your guide to the basics of the game and will help you survive until you finish the first few quests for him. You will have to learn how to move, jump and attack using the on screen stick and buttons. In addition you will also have to learn to destroy blocks and craft basic items such as torches or weapons. There will also be a short time flying option unlocked during the tutorial, which is very helpful.

Once you got the basics of Block Story, you will still get new quests, but they will be more and more challenging. For this reason your character will need to level up to be able to take down more powerful enemies, such as a T-Rex or even dragons. Leveling is very simple, you just have to complete quests, destroy blocks, kill enemies and basically interact with the world to gain experience. At each level up, you also get points to spend on stat boosts such as faster move speed, faster block mining, extra bow or sword damage.

When you reach a high enough level, you will be able to gather artifacts that summon dragons and other creatures, which you can even ride using a saddle. Artifacts have endless potential, but highly magical weapons such as lightning swords and mystical staves are also a possibility to any high level character.

If the basic Story mode is not challenging enough for you, then consider playing Hardcore mode, which is the same as the Story mode, except enemies are twice as strong, your possible respawns are limited and you lose your character progress on death. The normal Story mode is very mild compared to this, as you can respawn an infinite amount of times without losing any items or progress.

The third way to play Block Story is Creative mode, in which you don’t have to fear enemies and care about leveling, instead you are free to build anything you want. You also have endless flying, so it’s easier to reach whatever you are building at the moment. Let your mind go wild and construct anything you want! Keep in mind that this mode is locked by default and you need to pay $1.99 to unlock it.

The game also has a shop where you can spend mined gold ore or the premium currency of diamonds. Diamonds can get you things such a car, fuel, goblin pickaxe or even a teleport stick. They can also be used to purchase stat boosts, or reset your previously gained stat points. Diamonds are available for purchase in packs of a minimum 100 diamonds for $0.99, or $44.99 for the maximum amount of 9000 diamonds.

There are also numerous achievements, some of which award ingame items for completion, and some which give out diamonds. You can also decide to watch ads to get some more diamonds for free. Watching ads with consent is one thing though, as the game loves to have video or banner ads pop in at random times.

Cheats & Tips for Block Story

To be successful at Block Story you either have to play for a long time and gather everything you can find, or use cheats to get stuff faster. Spending diamonds in the shop to get a goblin pickaxe or a car very early in the game can make a big difference, but getting those pesky diamonds is not easy without cheats! So listen on and let me tell you some tips and tricks!

The first thing you should probably try regarding the diamonds is to complete achievements. Most Player achievements award you with diamonds and are very easy to complete. You also start out with 500 diamonds without doing anything, so until those run out, you should be set.

Regarding the Story mode, your best bet to survive the experience is to keep close to The Wizard for as long as you can, especially since he will follow you around until you complete some quests for him. He is a level 70 character, who can kill almost anything instantly. It’s a good idea to abuse this fact to not die early on.

As for another tip, when the night comes, you might want to find shelter, so enemies won’t kill you in the dark. For your first night, just destroy some soft blocks and build a home out of those, or dig a hole in the ground and patch in the entrance with blocks.

Also don’t forget the Creative mode of Block Story, as if you are not interested in the RPG elements of the game, this mode is for you, but you have to unlock it by spending $1.99. You can build anything in the normal mode as well, if you really don’t want to pay, but it’s harder to do without the possibility of endless flying.

As a last tip, if you have troubles surviving in Hardcore mode, you have the option to watch an ad when dying to not lose your items upon death. This is cheating, but if you really don’t want to lose your hard earned weapons and other rare items, then it’s a very useful trick.

Block Story Review

Where to even start with this review? I honestly don’t know if I should praise the game for its few good ideas, or start immediately with how terrible my playthrough was.

Block Story no doubt has some good ideas, such as the option to fly even in the story mode. Flying is limited for a short amount of time though, so it’s not too powerful, but still useful. Another good idea is the quest system, so it always keeps you busy with on screen instructions and gives aim to the experience, instead of being cluelessly lost in the world.

That’s basically all the positives I can mention. Most of the game is so bad, that I must shift my comments towards that. As for the visuals, the game looks exactly like most Minecraft copies, without anything charming about it. Characters and enemies also look very out of place in this blocky world, with their bland fantasy designs.

Now, I could get past the unimaginative and boring art of the game, but the gameplay is even worse. The main problem starts with the controls. The on screen stick to control your movement is just so unresponsive that it’s very sad. I found myself being stuck often after trying to move my character in a direction for too long, as the stick just disappeared after a while and stopped working. Most other buttons can also take 2-3 taps to register what I want to do. Changing the control scheme to the D-Pad helped somewhat, but then the inventory at the bottom of the screen covered half the D-Pad controls. This is extremely annoying and terrible design.

After trying my best to adjust to the controls, I finally started questing and killing some spiders. I must say Block Story’s combat is just as bad as its most other features. Enemies are easy to hit at first, but once you landed a hit and they start running, then good luck ever hitting them again. Controls are so dodgy and characters move with such lag that it’s just a struggle to do anything. I’m sad, but I haven’t gotten far in the story because of these issues.

I still tried out the building aspect as well, even though I felt really disappointed already. Destroying blocks takes a very long time without a pick, and even with a basic pick it takes so long that you will fall asleep before you are able to build a solid house. I’m not sure why they had to make it this hard to enjoy at least this side of the game.

My final judgement is that Block Story feels like a grind that doesn’t even pay off in the end, but keeps on being a pointless struggle. Maybe the later parts of the game can be fun with the dragon riding and similar stuff, but I just can’t imagine fighting my way through there with these terrible controls and the laggy gameplay. The worlds are also really small and similar to eachother, even though they are randomly generated.

If you want a block based game where you can fight monsters and build things, then go and get Minecraft, as it does things a thousand times better than this copycat disappointment.

Ratings

Artwork: The artwork of Block Story deserves a 4/10. This game could be shown as the epitome of uninspired design. They just took the popular blocky style, put some unfitting fantasy characters and monsters in it, then sprinkled it with dinosaurs. Really, a shame.

Music & SFX: The music and SFX in the game gets a 6/10. Music is very rarely played in the game, but it’s good enough when you actually get to experience it. The SFX deserves the some praise though, as the weather and nature sounds are really good. Combat, character, enemy and block destruction sounds on the other thand are very mediocre.

Story & Originality: Regarding the story and originality in this title, I give it a 3/10. This game is so unoriginal that it’s really sad. All possible fantasy tropes are there in the story quests, just as in the environments and the enemy types. Most quests are also limited to killing various enemies, which is gets boring after a while.

General Gameplay: I give the general gameplay of Block Story a 3/10. I’m really sad that I have to rate a game this low, but I won’t lie: this game is terrible copy attempt at Minecraft, made to attract its playerbase. Anyone with a sane outlook can realize in the first 10 minutes that the developers didn’t really try hard to make something unique or even good. Clunky controls, laggy movement, small worlds and bland environments are what this game is all about.

Addictiveness: The addictiveness of the game gets a very low 2/10. I can’t imagine myself ever coming back to this game, even if it gets updates. It’s so far down the rabbit hole of bad that it’s almost impossible to crawl out of it. The only way I can imagine anyone wishing to play this game day after day is if they feel masochistic or just don’t know better. Do yourself a favor and avoid this.

Overall Score: 3/10.
