Best Fiends is an adventurous role playing Match-Three puzzler game developed by Seriously Digital Entertainment limited. Match three category has millions of followers and enormous number of games too, which makes the overall competition tough. Although there is nothing left which can surprise us but we shouldn’t keep the hopes down and let’s see if Best Fiends provides us with anything new and creates its place among the top match-three puzzlers or is just overshadowed by many previous titles like Puzzle Quests.

Initial impression of the games was fabulous mainly due to the gorgeous artwork of spinning menu and unique step-by-step narration of story. Map of Minutia is divided into four parts. Game starts off from Green Glades which is the home of bugs, then you’ll cross a land of never ending winter called Frozen Hills just to reach ancient wasteland known as Endless desert, and after that you will reach your final destination, the fortress of Slugs, named as Mount Boom.
Best Fiends has all the elements that one expects from a good puzzler. Like almost every match-three game, there are five colors each representing a different element, for example, green represents leaves, red represents fruit berries, blue represents water, and so-on. Joining at least three similar tiles/objects will feed that thing to the bug associated with that color, if you have any, and that bug will attack Slugs.
The difference that I’ve seen in this game is that if you don’t have an associated bug, joining tiles will still deal a damage but it wouldn’t be much effective as compared to attack with an associated bug. Another difference is that there isn’t any weakness or strength system, effectiveness of all elements are equal against those Slugs.
The size of the grid is 7×7 which is larger than what we normally see in RPG puzzler. There are goals for every level, for example, feeding aforementioned numbers of leaves or any other element, killing a required numbers of Slugs. The game isn’t easy as it seems and the difficulty rises with a constant gradient as levels are cleared. There is a limit on number of moves that you can make to reach your goals. That’s not all, you’ll be facing different obstacles which are dependent upon the regions you’re in, for example, tree stumps and grass in Green Glades or ice brick and rocks in Frozen Hills. Few of these are permanent while other aren’t and requires to be broken before tiles can pass through them or you can join the present tiles, and to break them you’ll have to eliminate any adjacent element. Other than these obstacles you’ll also find things like diamonds, keys and bombs, and each of these serves a specific purpose which will be explained later on.
As previously mentioned, there are bugs related to every element. For all elements except mushroom, purple color, there are four bugs while mushrooms has five. Every bugs is different and possess a unique special skill, for example, the attacking power of Brittle is one hundred-fifty on level five and converter block is the special skill which converts surrounding blocks into its own color, and attacking power of Temper is two hundred twenty-five on level four and can blow up five blocks in a row as special skill. Just like in card games, every bug can be evolved and the maximum level that they can attain is twenty. Upgrading increases their attacking power and effectiveness of their special skill, and after every five levels their look evolves too. Of course evolution isn’t free and requires Meteormites. Yellow and blue are the two type of Meteormites that you’ll earn, yellow ones will be abundant and are required for first few levels of evolution while for the higher level evolutions blue ones are required, and if you don’t have them then you can always use the in-game currency to purchase these Meteormites.
There are two in-game currencies namely diamonds and gold bricks. Diamonds aren’t that rare when compared to gold bricks, and the usage of both is different too. Diamonds can be used to purchase Meteormites and Keys, while Gold Bricks are used to purchase extra moves to finish off a level and energy, yes you heard it! Energy!! Best Fiends is plagued by energy system which might be a major let down for many users. The game starts off with twenty energy bars. Initially every stage consumes one of them but later on the consumption increases and Ten minutes are required for a single refill.
Whenever you’ll select a stage to play, a slot will prompt up. Here you can change your bugs, check their attacking power, review goals and moves required. As previously explained the basic purpose is to make the longest possible chain, greater the chain, the more damage you’ll do. To use the special skill of a bug you’ll have to fill a respective circular bar first and that bar appears whenever you select a respective tile. Once that bar is filled, one of the top tiles will be converted into a special tile and you’ll have to utilize that tile in your chain to activate special skill. Every Slug too has its rated health and special skills, for example, shuffling up grid or change any tile into a tooth. The health of Slugs increases along with stages to give you a tough time.
Once a stage is cleared you will get extra Meteormites for the remaining moves, a couple of keys to open up boxes, diamonds and in some cases Gold bricks too. When all the statistical calculation completes, depending on number of keys, you will open up any from nine boxes, which will be replaced by new boxes if all consumed. These boxes can give you one of many things, which includes a varying number of different Meteormites, a new bug, extending energy bar, energy recharges, diamonds and loads of more. The developers tried to be a bit generous here by giving you all the stuff that you’ll collect during game and a box as a reward for effort even if you aren’t able to complete the stage.
The first thing a user encounter after running Best Fiends is a note indicating that it’s a freemium game hence few things can only be purchased using real currency. Everything within the boundaries of this game, directly or indirectly, can be purchased by diamonds and gold brick, and these in turn can be purchased using real currency. To purchase any of these two in-game currencies just press on the respective icon on the top right corner of the main menu and you find five packages for both of them.
Let’s start with the diamonds first. The cheapest and most humble package costs $1.99 and gives two hundred-fifty diamonds. Second package will set you back by $4.99 and gives seven hundred-fifty diamonds in return. Third package is the most popular of all, having good diamonds to price ratio and moderate price of $9.99 and gives eighteen hundred diamonds. The second last package gives forty-five hundred diamonds for $19.99 and the last package named Mountain of Diamonds will create a hole in your pocket by demanding $39.99 for equally whooping ten thousand diamonds.
Gold bricks were limited during gameplay and same is the case for in-app purchases, they aren’t abundant here too. Starting with the smallest pack which is of eleven bricks and is for $0.99. The most popular pack of gold bricks costs $3.99 and fills up your counter by fifty-five bricks. Third package will give you one hundred-twenty gold bricks for $8.99. Fourth package gives two hundred fifty gold bricks and costs $17.99. The last and most expensive package, also holding the best value, costs $34.99 and gives five hundred-fifty gold bricks in return.
This review was based upon version 2.0.0 of Best Fiends and Sony’s Xperia Z1 compact was used to review it. Developers haven’t mentioned the minimum Android version requirement but should work on devices with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and above. Apple devices at least should be on iOS 7.0 to run this game. This game isn’t much graphics intensive but will require a decent processor so mid range devices should give you a smooth experience.
Best Fiends has option for cloud saving and can be synced with Google Play Games, which means you can access your game data across several devices at once. That’s not all, you will be able to access leaderboards to check and compare your rank not only with friends but with players from rest of the world. There are just five achievements against Best Fiends on Google Play Games that can give a total of twenty-five hundred XP which isn’t at all attractive and all five achievements are for finding five different colored bugs.
For a game that doesn’t requires an internet connection to play and features in-app purchases and energy system, two things are confirmed that there has to be a modified version of game which should give access to all in-app purchase related things and the device time changing trick should work to recharge energy, and fortunately both of these things are present for Best Fiends.
Search for the modified version of this game using Google, our crime partner, and copy it into your device, after that remove the previous version of Best Fiends. Before installing the modified version, make sure that you’ve checked “install from unknown sources” from your device’s security settings. Once installed, let it download remaining data from server and then you can enjoy almost unlimited energy, diamonds and gold bricks.
As installing this modified version will reset your progress, because of those unlimited stuff, and if you don’t want to lose your progress then you can try a trick to recharge your energy for uninterrupted gameplay. All you have to do is follow these steps, and set the time device to few hours ahead.

The developer has made sure that this game can rightly be called a balanced all-rounder. The artworks is top notch right from the beginning, the spinning world of Minutia right before the menu took me by surprise and I was like “What the….WoWW???” because it was the first time that I was watching something like this. The creatures and map are beautifully designed and detailed especially for a game which isn’t even of one hundred Megabytes. Everything is colorful and attractive, you’ll see bugs showing off different moves while attacking Slugs or dancing after finishing a stage.
The UI is beautifully designed. There are tons of elements but all of them are organized properly making otherwise could’ve been a complex game look simple. The tutorial makes the game is easy to learn and also tells everything that you’ll need to now to get a proper hold of this game.
The sound department might not be better than the artwork but isn’t much below either. Music is composed by same person who did for despicable me. The background music is cute, intuitive and doesn’t at all feels repetitive. Every single move has a unique corresponding sound which adds a fun factor to the overall gameplay.
There are just three things that I didn’t like about this game. The first one is that the “almost never ending” stages gives the feeling of game being an endless. The second one is about the probability of getting bugs which is too low and this issue, indirectly, forces the users towards in-app purchases; to buy diamonds and then use those diamonds to get more keys to open up locks, and the last one is the energy system which is hated by every single human on earth. Other than these issues game is completely enjoyable and I’ll definitely recommend it to Match-three lovers.
Ratings:
Artwork: I’ll give Best Fiends a deserving 8.5/10 for its artwork. The artwork is amazing, colorful, animation are smooth and, as previously mentioned, too good for a game with that miniature size. The most lovable thing about the artwork is the unique spinning design of the map in menu. Everything about the artwork will pull you towards the game.
Music & SFX: Best Fiends get another 8.5/10 for its music and SFX. As I’ve already mentioned, the background music is beautifully composed and is pleasant to ears as it can be. I would have loved a bit different music and a narrative voice behind the story cut scenes but that isn’t much of an issue.
Story & Originality: I’ll give Best Fiends a 7/10 for its story and originality. Although the main story is yet another “let’s save the world”. But the touch of bugs and insect is something which I haven’t seen earlier. All the remaining things, for example, evolving and elements, are something that we have been watching for ages hence Best Fiends represents nothing new here.
General Gameplay: I’ll give Best Fiends an 8/10 here. Although the gameplay isn’t unique but the balanced mixture really makes the game stand out from rest of match-three. If developer can increasing the chances of unlocking new bugs then I’ll increase this rating.
Addictiveness: Best Fiends gets another 8/10 for keeping the users in the game. Even during writing this review I spent twice as much time on playing this game as I do normally. The game does get challenging but who doesn’t like challenges? Even without IAPs, if you know the tricks, every single stage is clearable.
Overall I’ll give Best Fiends 8.5/10.
