Gameplay is fairly straightforward, cats or dogs of varying breeds and needing varying treatments are dropped off on your counter top by their owners. There are four possible activities that could be done to this animal, either grooming, veterinary healing, bathing, or dressing the pet up.
At first an instruction will be given to you y the owner, e.g. wash this pet, once you’re done with the first activity you will either have to put the pet in the kennel or perform some other activity on the pet. Once you are done simply place the animal in the kennel and the owner will immediately come to pick them up, at this stage you will be reimbursed for your services, based on the speed with which you completed the activities you may also be rewarded with a tip bonus.
There are two currencies in My Virtual Pet Shop, coins and star. You earn coins by doing your job and you use them to purchase upgrades and other resources. Stars are much harder to come by, you get them by completing objectives or you can purchase them from the in app store. When you purchase an item usually there is a wait time, stars eliminate the wait time they can also be used to get you cool upgrades to speed up your work time and earn you bonuses.
Purchasing anything in My Virtual Pet Shop from the in app store will get rid of advertisements, premium digital content essentially helps you advance quickly in the game, acting as a sort of cheat code in their right.
When you first start out there are tons of chances to get free stars so I wouldn’t jump into buying them just yet, unless you really want to go through quickly. Typically at the end of the day you will earn two stars anyways, I would recommend saving these until you really need them later on. On the same note, don’t spend too much money on upgrades just yet, the returns will e minimal at best, before anything else buy extras of each furniture item you have. Get more haircut chairs, vet benches, and bathtubs as these will greatly increase the speed with which you can process pets.
Multitasking is the name of the game in My Virtual Pet Shop, the better you are at getting things done while you’re waiting on something else to process, the quicker you’ll be able to finish with each pet and subsequently get paid. You only get but so much time in one work day, make the most of it, never let a pet just sit in one spot doing nothing, if it’s done with everything quickly move it to the kennel. Try to always be active, any downtime is just wasted money.
To get adequately paid you have to make sure your pets are in a good mood before you return them to their owners. The longer it takes you to get a pet from one location to another, the worse its mood will be, when a pet reaches its absolute worst mood you will not get paid. There are two cheats to take advantage of here, treats and candles. Treats will return your pet to a good mood as if nothing had ever happened, candles will slow down the rate of mood change, when it burns out the pet returns to their original mood. However, these do need to be bought at the beginning and they are quite expensive so only use them if you need them, they will carry over to the next day if you don’t use them.
One of the biggest challenges you will face are mini games. These are short tasks you must complete, mini games do not stop the clock so will still be penalized if another animal is waiting. Because of this begin mini games immediately after placing another animal in a station, this way you’re buying yourself time, if you begin a mini game and another animal is already waiting then you will be penalized heavily for this. One way to get around this is to use cheats such as treats and candles, however if you rely on these too much it will get expensive in the long run.
I really enjoyed playing My Virtual Pet Shop, it’s truly a joy for all ages, very addicting, fun and entertaining. There’s a never a point in My Virtual Pet Shop where you’re bored, you’re always in the process of doing something, moving a pet, getting a new one, etc. The pace is pretty slow at first though but eventually it does pick up to the point where you can easily get overwhelmed if you mess up.
The upgrading and “new item” system was a great way to add some dimensions to the gameplay, incorporating that strategic aspect is what I think makes My Virtual Pet Shop great for adults as well as children. Still, it is very much directed at children and you can sense it while you play, if my kid were playing this I would be concerned with the in app purchases as there are frequent advertisements and attempts to get you to buy premium content.
The animation is very simple, which is good in some respects as it doesn’t overload my device, however I was really expecting more. I don’t have an issue with two dimensional games if there is at least some effort towards a decent amount of animation to make it seem cartoon like, this wasn’t the case in My Virtual Pet Shop. The characters, and the pets, usually had one or two faces or emotions they make, characters slide in and out rather than walking, and all of the pets were essentially slight alterations to two basic templates, a lot more could have been done.
Colors were nice and the music was well, lively, and light although a bit repetitive I found it appropriate for the medium. Lastly, the cost of upgrading and purchasing new items was relatively high, taking quite a bit of time before you could maximize profits. Otherwise a pleasant game.
Ratings
Picture 5/10
A lot more could’ve been done in terms of the picture and graphics.
Sound/ Special Effects 5/10
Sounds were cutesy yet generic and repetitive.
General Gameplay 6/10
Gameplay was straightforward, simple, and fun, however upgrades were too costly and there should be more ways of upgrading once all items are obtained.
Story/ Originality 4/10
This isn’t the first pet shop simulator.
Addictiveness 8/10
Although it’s lacking in many of the technical features at the end of the day this is a fun game that you will enjoy whether you’re a kid or an adult it’ll have you coming back time and time again. If the developers had spent more time on some of the details I could easily see this skyrocketing to the top of the charts.
