Stickman Soccer 2014 is a sports game released by Djinnworks GmbH, an Austrian company which is known for other games such as Stickman Cliff Diving, Rope’n’Fly 3 – Dusk Till Dawn and Stickman Tennis. The game is available on both leading platforms and it has a rating of 4.2 out of 5 on Google Play and 4 and a half stars from a maximum of 5 on Apple’s App Store. Moreover the game has been downloaded for more than 10 million times in 2016 on both platforms and it can run without any problems on iOS 5.1.1 or later or on an Android version of 2.3 and up.
Being a soccer game, it is obviously that you will play with a nation of your choice (there are more than a few available) and, naturally, your objective is to win the match by scoring as many goals as possible. You will find out that Stickman Soccer 2014 is a game that provides some different modes from which you can choose from – for example you can play a penalty shootout game, a quick game or you can try your luck and play in the American Cup, the Europe Cup and so on. I must mention that the soccer championships are locked at first but there are some ways to unlock them: using real money or watching some videos.
Unfortunately there is no currency in Stickman Soccer 2014 and this implies that it is impossible to make any microtransactions whatsoever. Despite this, there are some good news for those who want to show their support to the developers – you can become a pro player in exchange of $1.99. This feature basically makes your account “premium” and you are able to play a fully unlocked game with no ads.
Stickman Soccer 2014 does require a mandatory Sign-Up with the Google Play Services account (at least for the Android users) and after doing so you can also Sign-In with different social accounts such as Facebook, Google+ or Twitter. I strongly believe that this is a good idea because it will save your game progress and ensure no data is lost in case of changing devices or for some reason you uninstall and the decide to reinstall the application at a later date.

Even though it is not that popular in the United States, soccer is the world most watched and appreciated sport. There are billions of money invested in it and in the afferent merchandise. While in the PC & Console zone, there are only two major companies that fight each year for the supremacy, when you talk about mobile games there are dozens if not hundreds of soccer games. Stickman Soccer 2014 fortunately is one of the decent ones.
What I like the most about Stickman Soccer 2014 is the fact that the game is a mix up of Stickmen and one of my favorite sports of all time. The idea is something new and I find it really interesting. The game is casual enough to be played by all ages and that’s a great thing too. In addition to this, the gameplay is not the best I’ve seen but it does its job. I also like the fact that you can play 4, 6, 8 or even 12 minutes per half. You can easily calculate the time needed for winning a competition (we need to stay positive) and see if it is worth it to use one of your three “play the competition without watching videos” passes you have after you watch the videos.
There are also some things I don’t like about Stickman Soccer 2014. First of all, I am really confused by the “watch videos so you can play different tournaments” idea. On one hand, it can be a really nice feature because you can play all the game’s content without paying any money at all. On the other hand, you are basically demanded to watch videos from time to time or you will be overwhelmed by ads or you will not be able to access any “cool stuff”. I still believe that having “exclusive content” only for the premium users and letting other tournaments free for anybody is a more friendly idea.
Secondly, I really don’t like the fact that the referee is not on the field (weird, I know) and the fact that the game seems to struggle when a goal is scored – the screen turns black and you start from the middle. A more elegant way of handling the transition would have been appreciated. Finally, I think that at the moment, the game lacks any ways of keeping the player focused – you don’t have to worry about not being able to play a tournament or losing all your money/credits/whatever – you just watch some videos and you will be fine. It should be more challenging in my opinion.
Overall, Stickman Soccer 2014 is a game I would most likely recommend for 2016. It is casual, it is fun and it can be used for passing time with no problems at all. It lacks a lot of things but it compensates with the originality.
Ratings
Artwork: Stickman Soccer 2014 gets a rating of 7 out of 10 for its artwork. Don’t get me wrong, I love Stickmen, everybody does but this is not an excuse for a rather bad-looking game. The “environment” is basically just the same soccer field where a bunch of same-looking stickmen models (wearing different colors) are playing. The animations are hilarious but at the same time really weird – the way they move, jump or cross with the ball is anything but realistic. I would have expected more especially when you use stickmen because they don’t have high graphical requirements. At least the developers got the theme right – it would have been hard not to do so.
Music & SFX: The game gets a rating of 10 out of 10 at this section. You read it right, don’t need to do it again, Stickman Soccer 2014 gets the maximum rating here. It has an awesome and entertaining menu song that creates a “World Cup-like” atmosphere and the sound effects are matched perfectly. The crowd is interactive, the players are lively and the referee (even though you don’t see him) announce his presence with a strong whistle. You can’t wish more from a sports-themed game.
Story/Originality: Stickman Soccer 2014 gets a rating of 9 out of 10 for its originality. As you probably have already guessed, the game doesn’t have any story and it shouldn’t have. You can’t start a career or found a new club because the game is “nationals-exclusive”. It is true that because of this, Stickman Soccer 2014 is different from the other dozens of soccer games on the market. What really makes the game original is the using of stickmen. I always say that “this type of game is the last, they can’t put stickmen in others” and apparently I am wrong for once. The game has a lot of flaws but you just can’t deny its authenticity. The developers deserve a shout-out.
General Gameplay: The game gets a rating of 7 out of 10 at this section. Whether you choose to “manually” run or let the players run by themselves, you will have a hard time getting used with the movement from Stickman Soccer 2014. As I mentioned in the artwork section, the animations are both odd and funny at the same time but this also disrupts the gameplay a bit. You will not once find that the players tend to not listen to you and become unresponsive. Other than this rather major problem, there isn’t much to complain about – the game is pretty straight forward and it doesn’t have any complicated features – who scores the most goals, wins. For the time I’ve played I haven’t encountered any bugs, freezes or rashes.
Addictiveness: Stickman Soccer 2014 gets a rating of 7 out of 10. Because the game doesn’t have a currency, there is no point of having any daily rewards or collectibles. You can’t play in a multiplayer game but at least you have leaderboards. It is a challenging game with more than a few difficulties but in my opinion that’s not enough. You will probably spend some time trying to win each cup and trying to get better at the game but eventually you will get bored. And unfortunately there is nothing you can do after. The key to sports games is the “replayability” (yeah, I know, this term doesn’t exist, but still…it suits) and Stickman Soccer 2014 doesn’t have it.
Overall, Stickman Soccer 2014 gets a rating of 8 out of 10. Having a modest gameplay and an average artwork but being saved by the really good music and the fact that it is really fun, the game can still make a breakthrough and become really popular.
