Managing a virtual bakery is not as hard as you might expect at first, but difficulties might still arise at times. In Bakery Story 2, you will not only have to make sure that customers are satisfied with your desserts, but also take care of the finances of the bakery, and decorate the building to lure in even more people hungry for sweets!
Let’s cover the most interesting part first, which is the creation of various sweet desserts, that will be served to the first customers of your newly opened bakery! Even the most basic bakery starts with two ovens, where the magic will happen. To create one of the few basic recipes, you will have to tap on an oven and choose the dessert you wish to create. After doing so, you will be notified of the required ingredients, which you also have to manually purchase in the General Store next door.
After the ingredients are ready, you just have to press the Bake button, and the process starts. You will be notified of how long the baking process will take, then you can take the finished product and serve it. But to do so, you will also need counters to place it on. For each different type of dessert, one counter is needed, as one dessert will always take up a full counter. If the dessert is placed, customers will constantly keep coming in the door and take some of it, then pay after they ate it at one of the tables. Be careful though, if you don’t have enough tables, customers will just walk out, while being annoyed!
That said, you will obviously need to pay attention to multiple aspects of serving customers in Bakery Story 2. First you have to make sure you have enough ovens to create all the different desserts. Non-basic recipes will also require better ovens, or stoves to create. Then you have to buy the ingredients from the General Store, or later on from the Fruit Stand, Bake n’ Brew or the Exotic Bazaar. You also have to make sure your bakery has enough space for counters, tables and chairs. Combining all these different things might be different at first, but it only takes a short time to learn!
The game has a quests system as well, to aid you in the right direction of managing the bakery. Quests are usually given by the two workers of the bakery, or the owners of the stores. They might ask you to bake specific desserts, such a Sugar Cookies, Welcome Tarts, Muffins or Strawberry Cakes. At other times the quest will request you to expand the bakery by purchasing a small extension in exchange for the gold earned by sales. Some quests will also have story bits about the two workers of the bakery, or the store owners. Finishing most quests will award coins and experience, so you can level up and get access to more types of recipes and unlockables.
Now, things move fast in Bakery Story 2, and you will have to buy multiple types of extensions: extra storage space for ingredients, extensions to the stores and new equipment to increase work speed. That is not counting the constant need to expand the building to make space for all this. Some of these upgrades will not only cost coins, but various parts and special recommendation letters as well.
To get these parts, such as shelf extensions, you will have to complete To-Go Orders, which are unlocked after reaching level 7. After a successful order completed by baking three types of desserts, you will get a reward part. Recommendation letters are different though, and they are given out by a regular customer, called Liam. He will come in at random times, and if you tap on him while he eats, he will give you a recommendation letter.
After getting familiar with the mechanics of managing Bakery Story 2, you will probably want to make the place feel and look unique as well. To do this, there are several customization and decoration options, such as plantlife, lamps, windows, floor tiles and wall tiles. As you level up, you will unlock more of these items, making it possible to turn the basic bakery into one of your dreams!
The game includes Facebook integration as well, meaning that you can invite and play together with your friends, or even send and receive Quick Serves, which can be used to immediately complete a dessert. Logging into Facebook will also give you 20 free diamonds, which is added to the 10 that every player gets for free in the beginning. From then on you will be able to visit your friends’ bakeries as well, watch their progress and comment on their design decisions!
Of course, Bakery Story 2 can’t leave out the in-app purchases either, as you can spend real money to buy gems. The cheapest pack of 40 gems goes for $2.29, and the biggest package of 1400 gems costs $59.99, although prices may vary based on region. Gems can also be exchanged for coins, at a rate of 20 gems for 2000 coins.
To get the most out of the Bakery Story 2 experience, you will definitely need gems sooner or later. Early on you might be able to do well without them, but later quests can be pretty hard to complete if you lack the premium currency. For this reason, you might wish to use gem cheats, and fortunately I can give you a few hints on how to do that! In case you don’t want to use cheats, but are only interested in tips, then don’t go anywhere either, as I have a few of those ready too!
While gems cannot be earned in the game for free, except for the basic bonus from the Facebook login, coins are much simpler to gather! Firstly, you should maximize the efficiency of your bakery by placing as many tables and chair as possible, so more customers can eat and pay at the same time. Then bake desserts that last a long time, such as Strawberry Lemon Bar or Cupcakes, so a they last through a long line of customers. Once this is done, you can even leave the game for a few hours, if you wish, the bakery will gain coins constantly, even if you are offline. When you launch Bakery Story 2 again, you will find 500 to 1000 extra coins!
Another thing you will want to keep in mind is to pay attention to quests at all times. It might not always be so exciting to follow the order of quests, but they give you coins and experience more than anything else. There might also be times when you can finish multiple quests at the same time, if they ask for the same desserts to be made.
Lastly, as you progress in the game, there will be more stores and features unlocked, such as the To-Go Orders, which reward you with parts needed for extensions, or the Bake n’ Brew store, where you can get chocolate and coffee. You should always keep in mind not to advance too fast when you unlock new things, as spending too much of your coins in places where it’s not needed yet can really hinder your progress. Try to expand stores that you use the most, and only expand new ones once they are often required in quests.
My imaginary red lights have started flashing soon after I entered Bakery Story 2 and started my journey as an owner of a newly opened bakery. Why is that so? Let me tell you my reasoning below.
The first reason why I felt like something will be up about this game was the fact that the whole interface felt copied directly from so many other games that I played before. All of these bakery, restaurant and salon games use these exact same design choices in their menus, and usually in their business strategy as well.
While the first 30 minutes I spent in the game were acceptable and somewhat entertaining, the game soon turned into an endlessly repeating loop: I had to bake desserts requested by the questgivers, then get more tables, chairs and counters. Soon the place started to become too small to house all of my items and the customers as well, so I had to make a choice: either place ovens and stoves in places that doesn’t make sense aesthetically, or spend over 5000 coins and wait a day to expand a big enough part of the bakery. Then bake some more desserts and the cycle continues.
Sadly, each expansion of the building was somewhat misleading, as they only expanded a single line worth of space in the building, where only a potted plant can fit, instead of unlocking any significant space. Then it also takes an extremely long time for these expansions to finish, since I didn’t want to waste gems on them. Expanding the ingredients storage is also slow, as you can either spend gems to instantly do it, or have to wait until specific quests pop up.
Most things start to take too long after passing around level 7 or 8, and the game turns into something that you should only check on once or twice a day, or spend a lot of gems to keep playing at a perfect pace. Since gems can’t be earned in any way for free in the game, except for a one time bonus of 20 gems, this last option is not ideal.
That being said, I can see the potential in the game for someone that might have not played anything similar before, but if you did, then you will probably get tired of Bakery Story 2 pretty fast in 2016.
Ratings
Artwork: I give the artwork of Bakery Story 2 an 6/10. This is a kind of pretty game for the most part, but to be honest, the character designs turned out to be a little weird, in my opinion. Characters can have facial features that turn them creepy, instead of cute, which was probably the first intention. Environment design on the other hand is great, which is a plus.
Music & SFX: The music and SFX of the game deserve a 5/10. I wish I could give this a better rating, but the complete lack of personality in the one song that the game repeats doesn’t leave much space for a positive opinion. I feel like I heard this exact same elevator music before on countless occasions. The SFX are also pretty basic, and they don’t cover much other than button press sounds.
Story & Originality: The story and originality of the game gets a 5/10 from me. While the game is entertaining, the general premise of it is not unique in any way. Neither does the baking or the interior decorating aspects feel distinct enough to set this apart from so many other similar titles. The small story bits related to the characters of the game also feels somewhat slapped on, instead of being any relevant.
General Gameplay: As for its general gameplay, I give Bakery Story 2 a 5/10. While the overall gameplay is amusing and can keep you busy for a while, sadly the game turns stale after a few hours of gameplay. After unlocking most earlygame features and being stuck on doing the same things over and over again, I feel like the game would need something new to motivate players to continue. Especially as late quests can be extremely hard without gems, and there isn’t much of a reward in the end for struggling through it without spending cash.
Addictiveness: The addictiveness of this title gets a 5/10 from me. If you are looking for a bakery management game, this might do as a start, but honestly, there are just too many limiting factors to really enjoy it in the long run.
Overall Score: 5/10.
