Guide: How to Turn the PS4 Controller On and Off

Let there be light on the DualShock 4

What good are games without a controller? Unless you’ve been spending too much time with a certain other console’s hands-free capabilities, you’re going to need to hook up the DualShock 4 to actually play some games on your PlayStation 4. But how do you turn the device on and off? Well, it’s quite straight-forward really.

1. Turning the DualShock 4 On

You’re not going to turn the controller on with sweet little nothings; instead you need to push the PlayStation button located between the analogue sticks in the centre of the device. If you’re not getting a response, your controller may be out of battery or not properly calibrated. In this instance, connect the DualShock 4 to your console using the provided Micro USB cable, and push the PlayStation button again.

2. Turning the DualShock 4 Off

This is slightly trickier unless you’ve got a doctorate in DualShock 4 science. To turn off the controller, hold the PlayStation button located between the analogue sticks in the centre of the device. Wait until a menu appears, and select ‘Adjust Devices’. You’ll be taken to a new menu, which includes the ‘Turn Off Device’ option at the bottom. Scroll down to it using the d-pad, and press the X button.
