Guide: How to Change the PS4 Controllers Volume

Silencing the DualShock 4

The PlayStation 4’s controller ships with a slew of new features, but one of the more noticeable additions is the ability for games to output audio through an onboard speaker. This creates some nifty surround sound effects in titles such as Killzone: Shadow Fall and Resogun, but isn’t ideal for late night gaming sessions. So, how can you lower those sounds – or turn them off entirely?

1. Hold the PlayStation Button

This is the button located between the analogue sticks in the lower half of the DualShock 4. Hold this down until you’re taken to a new menu.

2. Select Adjust Devices

At the top of the menu, select the ‘Adjust Devices’ icon using the X button on the DualShock 4. You’ll be taken to a second menu.

3. Lower the Volume

The top option in this new menu reads ‘Volume Control (Speaker for DualShock 4)’. Use the d-pad’s left or right buttons to raise or lower the volume. A chirp will play out of the DualShock 4 controller as you adjust it to help you to find the right setting. Move it all the way left to mute it completely, and all the way right to get the maximum volume.
