Believe it or not, video games consoles have been with us since the 1970s. This means anyone aged under 40 probably won’t even remember a time when they didn’t exist. Mind. Blown.
Having now reached the dizzying eighth generation of video games hardware — with the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U — it’s high time we took a look back at what has gone before.
The best way of doing this is surely to ask you, the MakeUseOf readership, to tell us all about the video games console you remember most fondly, and why it retains a place in your heart. Therefore, we want to know, What Is Your Favorite Games Console Of All Time?
You have dozens of consoles to choose from, dating all the way back to the Magnavox Odyssey released in 1972, and ending with the current trio already named above.
We don’t mind which generation your most beloved console belongs to, as long as you choose just one from the long history of video games. And then tell us, via the comments section below, why that particular console resonated with you to such a degree that you are happy naming it as your favorite of all time.
This question was prompted by my personal favorite games console of all time celebrating an important birthday. The Dreamcast recently turned 15, having been first released on Sept. 9, 1999. And while this particular games console failed so spectacularly that it took Sega out of the hardware business, it captured my heart and is still, to this very day, refusing to let go.
The video below — which shows a bunch of stupid teenagers failing to be impressed by the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) — also played its part. We expect the NES to be named at least a few times during this discussion, and yet here are some youngsters totally disrespecting this fantastic slice of retro gaming goodness. The fools.
We cannot let them get away with this. The best way of battling against such ignorance is for us to collectively take an enjoyable trip down memory lane. This is where nostalgia resides, making us smile as we recount past glories. You know, when video games were actually challenging.
