If you have a PlayStation and like horror, Christmas has come two months early. To celebrate Halloween, the Playstation Store is running a two week Sale of the Dead with big discounts on some awesome scary games.
At MakeUseOf we’ve made no secret of our love for Halloween, and it’s great to see Sony feels the same way. The Sale of the Dead runs for two weeks and different games are discounted each week. The first week kicked off on the 21st of October, the second starts on the 28th.
Sony is offering some great discounts. They’ve always been good to PlayStation Plus customers and the Sale of the Dead is no exception. Everyone gets up to 65% off but PS Plus members get a whopping 80% off some games. Many of the best games are a couple of years old, so if you missed them the first time round, now is the time to pick them up for practically nothing.
You can see the full list of games over on the PlayStation blog. In this article, I’m going to recommend some of the best deals you can get in each week of the sale.
At the moment, unfortunately, the sale appears to be US only. If that changes, rest assured, we’ll update this article and let you know.
Week one runs from the 21st to the 27th of October. To kick things off Sony is offering discounts on some great games. There’s sixteen available across the PS3, PS4, PSP and PS Vita. Here are some of the best ones:
Dead Nation is a top-down zombie shooter that’s great fun and looks stunning. My colleague Dave went so far as to call it a game you need to play. Even at its original retail price it was a great deal. With the discount, it’s a steal.
Originally, Dead Nation was $7.99 on the PS Vita and PS3, and the Apocalypse Edition was $14.99 on PS4. During the Sale of the Dead, the PS Vita and PS3 editions drop to $3.99 and the PS4 version drops to $7.49. PS Plus customers can get them for $3.19 and $5.99, respectively.
Dead Space 2 is properly scary. I picked it up when it first came out and struggled to play it at night.
It’s a third-person survival horror game. You’re stuck, alone on a spaceship… except for the aliens that want to kill you. You have to survive, and that’s no easy task. Dave was also scared out of his mind by Dead Space 2; he listed it as one of the four games that will actually terrify you.
It’s a few years old, so the regular price is only $19.99, but it is still one of the best deals of week one. Without PS Plus it’s reduced to $6.49; with PS Plus it’s down to a ridiculous $3.89. If you want a good scare for Halloween, do yourself a favour and play Dead Space 2.
If you haven’t played Plants VS Zombies yet, you can pick it up on PS3 or PS Vita for a little over five dollars. It’s an awesome game, but if you have a smartphone, I’d recommend getting it there instead. It’s cheaper and a perfect time killer on public transport.
Dante’s Inferno on PSP is also steeply discounted from $19.99 to $6.49 ($3.89 for PS Plus customers). It’s a cult classic that divides opinion; some people love it, others hate it.
Week two runs from the 28th of October to the 3rd of November. The deals are just as good as week one. There’s twenty-two games (six more than week one!) available across the PS3, PS4, PSP and PS Vita. Here are some of the best ones:
Not only is Red Dead Redemption one of the best Rockstar games ever made; it’s one of the best games ever, period. The Undead Nightmare expansion ramped up the horror factor by adding zombies. Riding around the Wild West being chased by the living dead is one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had.
Normally selling for $39.99, Undead Nightmare gets an awesome discount down to $11.99 or $7.19 if you’ve PlayStation Plus. At that price you’d be brain dead not to pick it up.
Guacamelee! is less scary and far more ridiculous than the other games on this list. You play as Juan, a Mexican wrestler, as he fights his way through the lands of the living and the dead to save El Presidente’s daughter in this side-scrolling platformer. There aren’t too many PS4 games available in the Sale of the Dead and this is one you can grab.
As an indie game, Guacamelee! is only $14.99 regularly but still gets reduced to $10.49 and $7.34 if you have PS Plus.
Outlast is a first-person survival horror game for the PS4. Check out our comprehensive review to see if it’s for you.
Manhunt is one of the most controversial games of the last generation. Violence in video games has always been a hot button issue and Manhunt pushed things to the limit. It may not be the best game ever, but as with anything that generates controversy, it’s often worth trying them out for yourself.
What do you think of the games in the sale? Have I missed any of the best deals. Let me know in the comments.
