In the past, game developers have to spend no more than $400 for creating Android and iOS games. This decision of a company to actually offer their platform for free is already considered a great and obviously a very beneficial improvement in the mobile game industry. In the next few months, it is being said that support for Windows Phone 8 and Blackberry 10 will also become available for free.
Independent developers and those who are just starting up in mobile game development are the ones who can really take advantage of this phenomenal idea. This is one of the best means for them to develop their product and not have to worry much about problems with their budget. They are also not required to share their revenues or to purchase licenses with Unity when they begin to commercialize their mobile game.
It’s really not that surprising that the result of these changes has made the company increase the number of people in their community. Before this decision, there were more or less 13,000 people in Unity’s community. After they have allowed their cross-platform development tools to be used for free, the community has reached almost 2 million members at present.
This concept of allowing their game development tools to be accessed with no charge is specifically designed for small studios and independent game developers. This is for the purpose of developers being able to carry out or implement their creativity and develop their business in an environment where there’s less pressure when it comes to challenges in their finances. This is actually just an extension or addition of what they have launched in 2009 which is Unity Free.
Although, there were also requirements that have been made in order for the company to move forward and continue developing better tools in the future. Those bigger and already well-established companies with generated revenue that exceeded $100,000 in the previous year are still obliged to make use of the paid version.
With the number of people who have added themselves as members of the company’s community, this decision is being realized as a very successful one. It won’t be too much of a shock as well if more companies will decide to take similar steps in helping out those who are just starting out in this very complex world of Mobile Game Development
