Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has 13 Standing Stones that litter the landscape. Keeping track of each of these 13 Stand Stones can be tricky, so we’ve listed them here for a quick reference guide, should you ever feel the need to switch.
You can only have one Stone active at any one time, so to help you make that decision we’ve even suggested which might be useful and when. Not all will be beneficial to your particular character.
Location: Falkreath Hold
Best Use: Increases the speed at which all Warrior abilities level up, useful for characters that prefer using only melee attacks.
How To Find: One of the three Standing Stones you visit after escaping the beginning area in Helgen. The comrade you are running with will point them out as you make your way down the hill towards Riverwood. If you missed this, then keep heading along the west road until it curves up the mountain.
Location: Falkreath Hold
Best Use: Increases the speed at which all Thief abilities level up, useful for characters that prefer sneaking, archery and general roguery.

Best Use: Increases the speed at which all Mage abilities level up. Unsurprisingly, useful for characters who chose to use magic of all kinds.

Location: The Reach
Best Use: Increases the speed at which all skills level up. Isn’t as effective as the Warrior, Thief or Mage Stones, but still useful for those characters who like to use a bit of everything.
How To Find: This stone can be found to the northeast of Markarth, north of Kolskeggr Mine. Keep following the path from Markarth to the northeast until you find the mine, then head north.
Location: Hjaalmarch Hold
Best Use: This Stone doubles the speed of Magicka recovery, but makes its user twice as vulnerable to magic. A double edged blade that makes Mage’s able to cast more spells in a fight, but makes them a real liability in fights against other magic users. Counter this by increasing your health, or using spells that protect against magic.
How To Find: Locate Fort Snowhawk to the west of Morthal. From there, head a little way to the north to find the stone.
Location: Eastmarch Hold
Best Use: Using this Stone will add you a bonus 50 Magicka, as well as absorb 50% spell damage. It will, however, half your Magicka regeneration – which can easily be offset by enchanted mage robes.
How To Find: This Stone is located to the south of the area. Look for Mistwatch keep as a landmark, the Stone itself is located a short way to the west, near to Darkwater Crossing.
Location: Falkreath Hold
Best Use: This Stone provides a permanent boost to Health and Stamina recovery with a boost of +25%. There are no downsides to this, so useful for warriors to give them an edge in battle.
How To Find: In the centre of Lake Illinalta north of Falkreath is a small island. On this island is The Lady Stone. If you’re looking for a nearby landmark, the keep Illinalta’s Deep can be seen to the north, or the Half-Moon Mill directly to the west.
Location: The Pale
Best Use: Like the Lady Stone, this Standing Stone also provides two beneficial effects with zero negative effects. The first is the additional 50 points of damage resistance, while the second is 25% magic resistance. This is brilliant for Mages, offering additional damage resistance, or excellent for anyone who wants to take more damage.
How To Find: This Stone is a little trickier to find, hidden out away from main roads and out in the sticks. It can be found to the northeast of Labyrinthian, or directly to the west of Fort Dunstad.
Location: Whiterun Hold
Best Use: This Stone raises the dead of all creatures – human or otherwise – that you have killed. As you might expect, this is rather handy in any battle with large groups of enemies.
How To Find: From Whiterun take the path east and over the east bridge. Keep following the path and you’ll see the Stone along the way.
Location: Winterhold Hold
Best Use: Having this Stone active provides you with the Paralyze ability, which affects a target for 5 seconds and deals 25 points of damage. While this is useful, it is possible to replicate this effect through a spell or poison – so not worth keeping on to.
How To Find: To the east of the College Of Winterhold is a wrecked ship (The Pride Of Tel Vos), directly northeast of here is a small island in the water – the Standing Stone is located here.
Location: The Rift
Best Use: Equipping this Standing Stone will give you the Invisibility spell, which can be kept active for 60 seconds. While this is helpful if you prefer a stealthy character, its uses are obviously handy for anyone. This effect can be simulated with spells, but even still The Shadow Stone can be handy for its powerful ability.
How To Find: From Riften and Mistveil Keep, take the south road until you locate Snow-Shod Farm. From there, head southeast until you find the Stone. It’s not much further.
Location: Haafingar Hold
Best Use: By giving you additional carry weight by 100 and removing any movement penalty, the Steed Stone is useful both for those who like to carry a lot of loot and heavy armour-clad warriors.
How To Find: Locate Fort Hraggstad in north section of the area. From there keep heading east and you will, eventually, come to the Standing Stone.
Location: Winterhold Hold
Best Use: Using this ability will enable its users to unlock any expert or lower lock once a day. Its use is obvious, but if you’re not too bad at lockpicking there are much greater Standing Stones to use.
How To Find: From Winterhold, leave to the west exit and follow the coastline along the west. You’ll find this on the small section of land that juts out into the water.
