Once you’ve acquired your first Dragon Shout in Skyrim, you’ll likely want to track down each and every one to fill out your repertoire of skills, abilities and powers. So we’ve listed all 20 Dragon Shouts in Skyrim, where they can be found and tips on how they will help you out.
Dragon Shouts are unlocked by collecting their related Words Of Power. These can be given to you after completing a quest, or found on one of the many Word Walls hidden inside dungeons throughout Skyrim.
Remember though, each new Word Of Power must first be unlocked by absorbing a Dragon Soul, and that means defeating a dragon. As they becoming harder to kill so, too, does acquiring a new Dragon Shout – so be sure to make your decisions wisely.
Animal Allegiance
This Shout enables you to charm animals not already under the control of others. Rank 1 has a small radius and lasts 30 seconds, rank 2 has a medium radius and lasts 45 seconds and rank 3 has a large radius and last 60 seconds.
Words Of Power: Raan, Mir, Tah
Word Wall Location 1: Angarvunde in The Rift. Requires dungeon quest ‘Medresi Dran and the Wandering Dead’.
Word Wall Location 2: Ancient’s Ascent (Dragon Lair) in Falkreath Hold.
Word Wall Location 3: Ysgramor’s Tomb in Winterhold. Requires Companions quest ‘Glory of the Dead’.
Aura Whisper
This Shout enables you to detect life – even through walls – of all nearby creatures, living or undead. It is ‘silent’ however, and so can be used without being detected. Rank 1 lasts for 10 seconds, Rank 2 for 20 and rank 3 for 30.
Words Of Power: Laas, Yah, Nir
Word Wall Location 1: Northwind Summit (Dragon Lair) in The Rift.
Word Wall Location 2: Valthume in The Reach. Requires dungeon quest ‘Evil in Waiting’.
Word Wall Location 3: Volunruud in The Pale. Requires Dark Brotherhood quest ‘The Silence Has Been Broken’ or dungeon quest ‘Silenced Tongues’.
Become Ethereal
With this Shout you become ghost-like, making you immune to any damage but also unable to attack or cast spells. You’ll still recover magicka and stamina, however, so great for evading danger at the last minute. Rank 1 turns you ethereal for 8 seconds, rank 2 for 13 seconds and rank 3 for 18.

Word Wall Location 1: Ironbind Barrow in Winterhold.
Word Wall Location 2: Lost Valley Redoubt in The Reach.
Word Wall Location 3: Ustengrav in Hjaalmarch. Requires main quest The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller.
Call Dragon
As obvious as it might sound, this Shout summons the dragon Odahviing to your side in battle, though you must be in an outdoors area. It will only work with all three words.
Words Of Power: Od, Ah, Viing
This Dragon Shout is learnt during the main quest ‘The Fallen’.
Call of Valor
This Shout summons a hero to your side to fight alongside you in battle. Each rank summons a different hero: rank 1 summons Gormlaith Golden-Hilt, who is equipped with a bow, a sword and a shield; rank 2 summons Felldir the Old, who uses a greatsword and has a few damaging Dragon Shouts and rank 3 summons Hakon One-Eye, who wields a battleaxe.
Words Of Power: Hun, Kaal, Zoor
This Dragon Shout is unlocked at the end of the Main Quest.
Clear Skies
Using this Shout disperses clouds and clears away fog and poor weather. It also dispels the any poison gas traps. Rank 1 lasts for 25 seconds, rank 2 lasts for 40 seconds and rank 3 lasts for 60 seconds.
Words Of Power: Lok, Vah, Koor
This Dragon Shout is learnt automatically during the main quest ‘The Throat of the World’.
Disarm
As the name suggests, this Shout disarms attackers by knocking their weapon out of their hand. Rank 1 will affect enemies up to level 12, rank 2 will disarm enemies up to level 20 while rank 3 will affect the maximum level of 30.
Words Of Power: Zun, Haal, Viik
Word Wall Location 1: Eldersblood Peak (Dragon Lair) in Hjaalmarch.
Word Wall Location 2: Silverdrift Lair in The Pale.
Word Wall Location 3: Snow Veil Sanctum in Winterhold. Requires Thieves Guild quest ‘Speaking With Silence’.
Dismaying Shout
This Shout causes enemies to run in fear. Rank 1 affects enemies up to level 7, rank 2 affects up to level 15 and rank 3 affects up to level 24.
Words Of Power: Faas, Ru, Maar
Word Wall Location 1: Dead Crone Rock in The Reach. Requires Daedric quest ‘Pieces of the Past’.
Word Wall Location 2: Labyrinthian at Hjaalmarch, in Shalidor’s Maze.
Word Wall Location 3: Lost Tongue Overlook (Dragon Lair) in The Rift.
Dragonrend
Using this Shout in a fight with a dragon forces it to land on the ground. Rank 1 will last for 15 seconds, rank 2 will last for 18 and rank 3 will land for 22 seconds.
Words Of Power: Joor, Zah, Frul
This is unlocked during the main quest ‘Alduin’s Bane’.
Elemental Fury
Using this Shout increases the speed of your attacks, each rank lasting for 15 seconds. Rank 1 increases speed by 1.3, rank 2 increases it by 1.5 and rank 3 increases it by 1.7.

Word Wall Location 1: Dragontooth Crater (Dragon Lair) in The Reach.
Word Wall Location 2: Kilkreath Ruins in Haafinger Hold. Requires the Daedric quest ‘The Break Of Dawn’.
Word Wall Location 3: Shriekwind Bastion in Falkreath Hold.
Fire Breath
As you might expect, this Dragon Shout breathes fire on your enemies. Rank 1 deals 50 points of fire damage, rank 2 deals 70 points of damage while rank 3 deals 90 points of damage.
Words Of Power: Yol, Toor, Shul
Word Wall Location 1: Dustman’s Cairn in Whiterun Hold. Requires Companions quest ‘Proving Honor’.
Word Wall Location 2: Sunderstone Gorge in Falkreath Hold.
Word Wall Location 3: Throat Of The World in Whiterun. Earned during the main quest ‘The Throat Of The World’.
Frost Breath
Like Fire Breath, but deals frost damage over five seconds, while it will also slow your enemies. Rank 1 deals 10 points of damage over five seconds, rank 2 deals 14 points of damage and rank 3 deals 18 points of damage.
Words Of Power: Fo, Krah, Diin
Word Wall Location 1: Bonestrewn Crest (Dragon Lair) in Eastmarch.
Word Wall Location 2: Folgunthur in Hjaalmarch. Requires the side quest ‘Forbidden Legend’.
Word Wall Location 3: Skyborn Altar (Dragon Lair) in Hjaalmarch.
Ice Form
This Shout sends out an ice blast, freezing any enemies in the area and dealing two points of frost damage over time. Rank 1 freezes enemies for 15 seconds, rank 2 lasts for 30 and rank 3 lasts for 60 seconds.
Words Of Power: Iiz, Slen, Nus
Word Wall Location 1: Frostmere Crypt in The Pale. Requires the dungeon quest ‘The Pale Lady’.
Word Wall Location 2: Mount Anthor (Dragon Lair) in Winterhold.
Word Wall Location 3: Saarthal in Winterhold. Requires the College Of Winterhold quest ‘Under Saarthal’ or the side quest ‘Forbidden Legend’.
Kyne’s Peace
Using this Dragon Shout calms any aggressive animals in the area. Rank 1 affects a small area and lasts for 60 seconds. Rank 2 has a medium area of effect and lasts for 120 seconds while rank 3 affects the largest area and lasts for 180 seconds.
Words Of Power: Kaan, Drem, Ov
Word Wall Location 1: Ragnvald (Dragon Priest’s Lair) in The Reach.
Word Wall Location 2: Rannveig’s Fast in Whiterun Hold.
Word Wall Location 3: Shroud Hearth Barrow in The Rift. Requires dungeon quest ‘Wilhelm’s Scream’.
Marked For Death
Using this Shout weakens your enemies armour as well as dealing damage over time. Each rank of the shout lasts for 60 seconds. Rank 1 deals 1 point of damage a second and reduces the enemies’ armour by 25, rank 2 deals 2 points of damage and reduces the enemies’ armour by 50 and rank 3 deals 3 points of damage and lowers the enemies’ armour by 75.
Words Of Power: Krii, Lun, Aus
Word Wall Location 1: Autumnwatch Tower (Dragon Lair) in The Reach.
Word Wall Location 2: Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary in Falkreath Hold.
Word Wall Location 3: Forsaken Cave in The Pale. Requires the side quest ‘The White Phial’.
Slow Time
As the name suggests, this Dragon Shout slows time, helping you rush in and defeat enemies or escape assaults. Rank 1 slows time by 70% and lasts 8 seconds, rank 2 slows down by 80% and lasts for 12 seconds while rank 3 affects 90% and lasts 16 seconds.
Words Of Power: Tiid, Klo, Ul
Word Wall Location 1: Hog’s End in The Reach. Requires the Dark Brotherhood Radiant Quest ‘The Feeble Fortune’.
Word Wall Location 2: Korvanjund in The Pale. Requires Civil War quest ‘The Jagged Crown’.
Word Wall Location 3: Labyrinthian (Dragon Priest’s Lair) at Hjaalmarch. Requires College Of Winterhold quest ‘The Staff Of Magnus.
Storm Call
Using this Shout will create a thunderstorm in the area, with lightning that strikes enemies in the area. Note: it will only work outdoors, and is great in a fight against dragons. Rank 1 summons a storm for 60 seconds, rank 2 for 120 seconds and rank 3 for 180 seconds.
Words Of Power: Strun, Bah, Qo
Word Wall Location 1: Forelhost (Dragon Priest’s Lair) in The Rift.
Word Wall Location 2: High Gate Ruins (Dragon Priest’s Lair) in The Pale.
Word Wall Location 3: Skulddfn (Dragon Priest’s Lair). Requires the main quest ‘The World-Eater’s Eyrie’.
Throw Voice
This Shout can be used to direct your voice to an alternate area, drawing enemies to investigate the sound. The only difference between ranks is the decreasing time required before it can be used again. Rank 1 has a rebuild time of 30, rank 2 with 15 and rank 1 with 5.
Words Of Power: Zul, Mey, Gut
Word Wall Location: Only an individual Word Wall is needed to unlock all three Dragon Shouts. It is found at Shearpoint in The Pale and is both a Dragon Lair and a Dragon Priest’s Lair.
Unrelenting Force
This Shout blasts your enemies, staggering them or sending them off their feet. Rank 1 has a weak strength and deals 2 points of damage, rank 2 has a medium strength and deals 5 points of damage while rank 3 has a strong force and deals 10 points of damage.
Words Of Power: Fus, Ro, Dah
Word Wall Location 1: Bleak Falls Barrow in Falkreath Hold. Requires main quest ‘Bleak Falls Barrow’ or side quest ‘The Golden Claw’.
Word Wall Location 2: High Hrothgar in Whiterun Hold. Requires the main quest ‘The Way Of The Voice’, which will teach you both the second and third Words Of Power.
Whirlwind Sprint
Using this Dragon Shout will enable you to dash forward, helping to access areas otherwise unavailable.
Words Of Power: Wuld, Nah, Kest
Word Wall Location 1: Dead Men’s Respite in Hjaalmarch. Requires the Bards’ College quest ‘Tending the Flames’.
Word Wall Location 2: High Hrothgar in Whiterun Hold. Requires the main quest ‘The Way Of The Voice’ and learnt from the Greybeards.
Word Wall Location 3: Volskygge (Dragon Priest’s Lair) in Haafingar.
