Introduction

The Battlefield 3 Beta can be downloaded for PC, PS3 and X-BOX 360 and is available from September 29 to October 10, 2011. This “tester” version only features multiplayer contests which are restricted to taking place in the Operation Metro map under the rules of Rush mode. The full game boasts a total of 8 unique settings and five different battle modes that can be played in each of them.

The beta version offers what is known as a Battlelog that allows players to communicate with one another, strategize before the next match-up and analyze their stats. There are no time limit parameters for playing the game, outside of the dates its available, and each multiplayer battle can only take place between players using the same console.

Rush Mode

At the beginning of each match, you will either be placed on the Attacking or the Defending team which will determine your objective for the remainder of the battle.

As the Attacking team, your goal is to fight your way into the opponent’s base and locate their M-Coms to plant explosives on them. Once the timer starts, you’ll need to protect the device from the Defenders who are trying to disarm it. The Attacking team achieves victory when they have successfully destroyed every one of the opponents’ M-Coms without losing all of the re-spawn tickets they have been provided.

As the Defending team, your goal is to post up near the M-Coms in your base and eliminate any Attackers who attempt to plant explosives on it. If your opponents are successful in arming their bomb, you will need to approach the device to disarm it before the timer reaches zero. The Defending team achieves victory when the Attackers have been killed enough times to lose all of their re-spawn tickets before they can destroy all of the M-Coms

Hints and Tips

On offense, do not retreat from the M-Com after planting your explosives and don’t wait right next to it either. Find a piece of cover a short distance away and keep your sights trained on the device to eliminate any potential defusers.
When approaching an M-Com, whether on offense or defense, equip a close-range weapon or pistol to more easily clear the area of multiple enemies as quickly as possible.
On defense, equip a long-range weapon if multiple members of your team are posted up near the M-Coms and move to a distant location. Take cover into a sniping spot and keep your crosshairs aimed at the M-Com at all times to act as the last line of defense in the event your allies are taken out at by a rocket or grenade.
On offense, approach guarded M-Coms with a long-range weapon and take out any opponents in the vicinity, then equip a close range-weapon to make your final dash. This will help you fend off any enemies that approach before you plant the explosives.
When attempting to defuse an armed device, move cautiously into the area where M-Com in question is located. Be sure to check, or at least keep an eye on, any blind corners or obstacles that the enemy who planted the explosives could be hiding behind.
On defense, do not try to defend an M-Com at close range until you are joined by at least two other teammates. Your opponents are already focused on just this spot and will target you immediately for elimination, whereas you will have to keep an eye on everything in the surrounding area at every conceivable distance.
On offense, use a rocket launcher or sniper rifle from a distance to take out a large cluster of enemies guarding the M-Com. Once the area is cleared, stay put and continue aiming in that direction to provide cover for teammates who attempt to plant the explosives.
Whether arming or defusing an explosive device, crouch down first to get behind cover or to stay out of the crossfire of a teammate trying to protect you.

Operation Metro

This location is modeled after Paris, France in the not-so-distant future and split into three distinct urban territories that include city streets, a public park and an underground subway station. When moving across the entire map, the battle starts in the park, descends into the subway systems and finally comes to a head in the streets of Paris.

In the park, the combat zone will be spacious and have various small offerings of natural cover scattered throughout such as bushes, trees and rock formations. The ground is uneven for the most part, effecting your aim while firing on the run and allowing for frequent escape opportunities over hills. There are also wooden bridges, statues and stone walls stretching around the perimeter of this section of the map.

In the subway area, the battleground is cluttered and confined to tight spaces such as train cars, narrow platforms and cramped locker rooms. There are a countless number of cover-points to hide behind and rooms to duck into which encourages you to stay on the run in between obstacles rather than post up in a sniping spot. This section of the map also offers tactical vantage points from escalators, phone booths and on the subway tracks.

The streets of Paris are a balanced combination of wide-open territory that allows for strategic positioning and obstacle courses of cover that take you off the beaten path. The upper floors of the surrounding buildings have balconies and windows that can be accessed for superior vantage points, but these areas can become easy targets themselves once a sniper makes himself known. There are also parked cars and billboards to hide behind and rooftops to run across in this section of the map.

Hints and Tips

M-Com Locations in the Park
1. At the foot of the bridge by the satellite.
2. Near the green walls by the satellite.
M-Com Locations in the Subway Station
1. The bathroom.
2. In front of the red wall across from the subway cars by the graffiti and fire extinguisher.
3. Outside the locker room by the metal detectors.
4. Behind the counter in the room surrounded by broken windows across from the orange seats.
M-Com Locations on the City Streets
1. By the white van behind the bus.
2. Within the building on the corner behind the orange and white umbrellas.
In the park, you can earn a string of kills with the sniper rifle by laying down in the tall grass at the top of a hill. This will keep you concealed while maintaining your line of sight on the enemies below.
In the subway’s lower level, weave left and right through the tunnel walls and doors of the train while moving forward to your next destination. This will prevent enemies ahead or in pursuit from keeping their crosshairs trained on you.
In the subway’s upper level, stay out of the open area in the middle unless you are in the process of protecting or attacking the M-Com. There are too many hallways and entry points in the surrounding walls for enemies to suddenly emerge from.
On the streets of Paris, use the umbrellas and awnings as cover from snipers perched in the windows above, then run into the nearest doorway to escape them altogether.
In the park, avoid the paved pathways at all costs when moving across the area as they provide little cover and are usually downhill from vantage points that enemies could use to easily take you out.
Based on the average distance from enemies because of the area’s layout, long-range weapons such as the sniper rifle are most effective in the park and close-range weapons like the shot gun work best in the subway. On the streets of Paris use long-range weapons when moving through the streets or squares and equip close-range weapons when heading into a building.

Classes

Assault

The Assault kit is designed for players looking to do combat in the style of the average infantryman. The weaponry for this class is meant for multiple enemies within a medium to near distance and discharges rounds that will usually either spray or explode across the field of battle. Another perk of this kit is that it provides a fair amount of additional ammunition clips and medkits.

Engineer

For maps that feature a high volume of vehicles or heavy artillery installments, the Engineer kit is provided for the purposes of either repair or dismantlement. This class is usually equipped with mines or weapons that fire projectile missiles and rockets for the sole intention of obliterating armored transports. However, this kit is also stocked with tools that can mend damage to vehicles belonging to your allies as well as a robot that disarms explosive devices.

Recon

The Recon kit is for players who feel more comfortable doing battle with as little exposure as possible and would classify their favorite method of combat as sniping. Using this class means staying in the same area for a prolonged period of time to pick off enemies in the distance with long-range rifles or moving out into the open when no one else is around to lay down mines or other defensive measures. This kit is also lined with extremely close-range weapons as well to fend off opponents that sneak up from behind.

Support

The Support kit is used by players operating in the name of teamwork and assistance since its primary function is to either re-supply or buy time for allies mounting offensive strikes. While they will rarely hit their mark, the weaponry this class employs is powerful enough to delay the competition’s advancing forces by making them duck for cover until your own team can re-group. A unique aspect of this kit is the ability to toss ammo boxes to your comrades while you remain out of the enemy’s line of fire.

Hints and Tips

With the Assault kit, equip a weapon with explosive rounds and find a group of your teammates who are moving towards an M-Com for defusing or planting purposes. Run to the front of the pack and use your weapon to clear the path ahead of any enemies standing in your way.
When utilizing the Engineer kit on defense, stay behind cover at a mid-range distance from one of the M-Coms and wait for an opponent to plant the bomb. Take the attacker out with a projectile rocket, then use your robot to defuse the explosives.
With the Recon kit, change sniping locations after every third or fourth kill you pick up in that position. This will prevent your resurrected victims from preemptively targeting you the next time they return to the area.
With the Support kit, stay in a group or two-man team when on offense to lay down suppressive fire ahead and allow your allies to continue progressing forward.
When utilizing the Recon kit in the city of Paris, choose a room with one entry point on the upper floor of a building that overlooks a high foot-traffic area. Lay one of your mines in front of the doorway or on the stairs leading up to the room so that enemies cannot sneak up from behind.
With the Engineer kit, equip your flashlight when moving through areas such as the subway station or buildings of Paris that have narrow corridors and multiple corners. Shine the beam into the faces of opponents who suddenly appear as a means of causing temporary disorientation to make them easier targets.
When utilizing the Assault kit, team up with players of the same class to run as a group towards opponents standing their ground. Not only will your weapons work better at close-range but the medkits and defibrillators available in this clss can help revive any ally killed in the process.
When utilizing the Support kit on defense, stay crouched down by teammates guarding the M-Com and throw them supplies whenever things start looking bleak.

General Hints and Tips

If you are struck by a sniper’s gunfire, immediately drop flat against the ground before the next shot occurs to crawl away from danger. You can usually distinguish a shot from a long-range weapon by the lack of anyone in sight and the low rate of fire.
When the battle moves into the next area, you can earn a high volume of kills by posting up near the connecting points and taking out the enemies that pass through. Examples of this include laying down on top of the subway tunnel’s entrance or taking cover behind one of the cars in front of the doors leading to the city streets.
To save ammo as well as ensure a killing blow, run at full speed towards enemies with their backs to you or ones in the middle of reloading to execute a knife strike. It may take several swiping attempts to hit the mark, but you can lash out as much as you want.
Take note of any repetition in the way you or your team are perpetually eliminated during a battle and change tactics accordingly for the next respawn. For example: Equip a shotgun and check elevated vantage points if you are continuously sniped, arm yourself with a rifle if players using Assault kits are constantly managing to get too close and stick by your teammates while carrying a rocket launcher if the competition has a knack for ganging up on you.
When entering areas of the map that are littered with obstacles and cover-points, crouch down while in motion to stay protected at all times. You should also lay down when an enemy approaches before popping back up to get the jump on them.
Memorize the location of parked vehicles and other machinery, then retreat to these areas when coming under heavy fire from multiple enemies. Just before reaching these machines, open fire to blow them up and create a smoke screen as a means of escape or counterattack.
To increase accuracy when sniping, do so from a laying down position and place the crosshairs ahead of moving targets so that your aim is already steadied when the gun fires. Depending on the distance and how much the rifle can zoom in, aim the shot at the larger target of your opponent’s body to increase the chance of scoring a hit.
As a means of conserving ammo, base the choice of which gun to unholster next on the weapon’s capacity versus how many enemies you encounter. The grenade and rocket launcher are limited in rounds so save them for opportunities in which a large number of opponents can be eliminated at once. A pistol on the other hand has a surplus of bullets and works most efficiently during one-on-one situations.
The way you move during combat should be reflected by the gun you are currently holding. Sniper kills take time and patience so walk or turn, when opening fire, by gently tapping the stick and easing your pace to a grind for improved accuracy. Shotgun kills occur by spraying bullets in an up-close fashion so feel free to run full speed at your opponents and pull the trigger as soon as the crosshairs graze any part of their upper body.
Unless the situation calls for the unique functions of the other two classes, try to stay consistent in choosing either the Assault or Recon kit. They allow for more accuracy and damage when earning kills, plus there is more to gain in leveling up with the provided weapons.
When firing a shotgun at multiple enemies, aim for the space between their bodies so that the shot spreads across evenly and causes maximum damage to them both.
An effective way to use C-4 in Paris is by putting it near a M-Com, on a road that runs past tall buildings, and enter a room that overlooks the explosives. When a decent number of enemies runs by, fire down at them so that the group stops to retaliate then blow them up.
When you and a number of your teammates are killed at the same time by a grenade or bazooka, stay close to the area where you respawn to meet up with others that appear nearby. You can now gang up on the enemy that’s responsible to take revenge.
