Time for more mall exploration. The first obvious landmark is straight ahead. Circle the carousel to find a horse Ellie can ride.
Completing the ride leads to Riley presenting Ellie with a pun book. There are tons of puns to read – 22 in total! Ellie puts away the book when she enters another activity, so watch out if you want to hear them all.
Behind the Merry-Go-Round, you can find an artifact in the fast food burger joint. Check out the kitchen.
Your goal? That’s upstairs, but take a detour down the steps to find a photo booth.
When you’re ready, go to the active escalator and ride it up. Ahead, and to the right, you’ll find an arcade. Not a ton to see here, but there’s a Jak X Racing machine in the back left corner.
To the right, Ellie can give the broken Angel Knives machine a try.
Using the machine, Riley will narrate an imaginary fight. To complete this section, you’ll need to press the buttons as they appear in the lower left corner. Whenever buttons are connected with a “+” plus sign, that means you’ll need to hold each connected key to finish the combination.
Riley runs off after the ensuing discussion, leading Ellie into a creepy storage room. The exit door is in the back right.
The double doors lead into a department store where Riley is waiting. And she has water guns!
Riley challenges Ellie to another game. This time, you’re both armed with water guns. Press [R1] to pump and reload the squirt gun.
Use the shelves for cover, and try to hit Riley with more water to fill her blue meter. Next, you’ll have to play hide-and-seek.
Periodically, Riley will yell, revealing her position if you’re keeping an ear to the ground. Use the close-listening ability to detect Riley when she moves.
Win two out of three rounds to finish this section. Actually, you can lose too – there’s no penalty! You’ll just miss out on a trophy.
After completing the water gun fight, the chapter will end and you’ll return to present-Ellie.

Chapter 5: The Enemy of My Enemy
Jumping from the helicopter with the medical kit, move through the path left and approach the Octopus Records store.
Get close, and a group of armed scavengers will appear. One of the men is jumped by an infected, dropping his bow. Grab it before going after the thugs.
There’s an extra arrow next to the body of the dead bandit, but there’s not much cover or room to hide out here. Move to the left and enter the record store for a better chance at hiding.
One of the three bandits will wander into the store alone. Stun them with a brick/bottle, or just sneak up and stab them.
There’s more items to scavenge behind the counters in the store. Resupply with a brick/bottle to easily deal with the next thug, just wait for the last two to spread out.
If you’re caught while taking out one of them, just whip out the pistol and shoot the last thug down before moving on.
On the way out, build a few molotov cocktails or nail bombs. They’ll really help in the following encounters.
Enter the hallway to the restrooms past the record store. Past the men’s room, you’ll find an open vent. Sneak through – there’s an artifact if you follow the blood trail.
Inside the sports store, you’ll find a group of infected just below while bandits wander around in the distance.
Toss a brick or bottle toward the bandits to draw the infected out. They’ll fight each other, thinning their ranks. Stay hidden until one group or the other is dead.
Try throwing a molotov cocktail at a bandit while they’re being attacked by two or more infected. You’ll kill three or more birds with one stone.
Wipe out the last enemies and check behind the counter for extra bullets. Outside the store, look for a pile of junk Ellie can climb to drop into yet another store.
Again, you’ll find a group of infected to the right while bandits wander in from the left. Don’t wake up the infected in the back rooms!
Instead, sneak toward the fallen roof until the bandits appear. Throw a molotov, bomb, or brick/bottle at the bandits to draw out the infected.
Once again, wait for the infected to pick off the bandits, or vice versa. Stay hidden, then deal with the left-overs with your pistol or the bow.
Check out the back rooms where the infected were hanging out, then climb out through the wrecked ceiling over on the far side of the store.
Climb up, and pull open the shutter to return to the starting atrium.
Outside the locked room with Joel, the gang of thugs are trying to break in. Stop them – sneak behind the railing on the right and toss a bomb or molotov to kill two of the bandits.
Enter the two-story store on the right for good cover, and lots of extra gear. Don’t leave the thugs alone for too long, someone will rush to start breaking the lock. Pick them off quick, they make an easy target.
After clearing both floors of thugs, don’t try to get to Joel just yet. Instead, prepare for another wave. Build smoke bombs, nail bombs, molotovs, or whatever you prefer. Heal up, and collect any extra ammo left behind by corpses.
A sniper will fire from above when Ellie tries to enter the locked door. Drop a smoke bomb or rush to the store on the left to hide.
From here, you can easily pick off any bandits that try to break into Joel’s room. They’ll keep trying if you use the bow.
Clear out the second wave, then rejoin Joel to complete this tough chapter.

Chapter 6: Escape from Liberty Gardens
Ellie and Riley are on the run at the start of the chapter. While Riley barricades the door on the right, Ellie can start trying to lift the shutter straight ahead. Riley will help. Hold [Triangle] to raise it, then run in to grab a cart.
Move the cart to prop up the shutter. Riley will shoot out the lock on the door ahead, leading into a loading bay. Avoid the infected on the left and climb through the back of the truck.
Down the hallway, Riley will duck under the junk. Follow her, but an infected will grab Ellie. Mash [Square] then rush to help Riley. Run to the infected attacking her and press [Triangle] to bring it down.
Run up the stairs to the right to enter an orange hallway. Make a sharp turn right just past the stacked crates, and jump the tables.
Entering an unfinished section of the mall, hop the railing to the right and leap over the gap on the scaffolding. Riley will lead you left. Vault the wooden barrier, then follow Riley up and around the scaffolding.
Jumping up onto the metal platform causes it to tip over. An infected will attack her – mash [Square] until Riley arrives, but unfortunately she’s tackled too. Rush to her aid and hit [Triangle] to kill the creature.
