How to Change Armor Color in Destiny

With a number of players complaining that getting to the max level in Destiny is far too quick a process, it’s important to remember that there is still a whole universe full of things to see and do after hitting the soft level cap at 20.
In fact Bungie likely planned it out that way so that new players would not have to grind for hours in order to catch up with their friends, meaning that you would have a bigger group of friends to take on the end-game challenges with.

So once you have reached the level cap, how do you stand out amongst a ever-growing pool of level 20 players, showing that you, or your clan of friends, are the ultimate Guardians?

Well one way to stand out is by using armour dyes, known as ‘Shaders’, to re-paint that plain old gear into something a little more flashy.
Shaders are a fantastic item in the game to help set yourself aside from the average Guardian, capable of completely changing the look of your loadout to make it look as powerful as it really is.

So first things first: If you haven’t reached level 20 yet, this isn’t for you.
There are ways that you can acquire Shaders at lower levels, but sadly you won’t have any use for them until later on, this is strictly a reward for getting to the max level.
For those of you that have managed to get to the level-cap, there are a few different ways to get a hold of the right style for you.

Most of them will be available for purchase at one of the many vendors in The Tower, in particular at the Outfitter, as well as with the representatives of each faction in the Destiny Universe. It may take a while to track down the one you really want though, as it seems rather difficult at this point in time to find vendors that have them in stock. You’re best bet is to just regularly check each shop when you’re between missions and find yourself at The Tower, otherwise you’ll struggle to find them in any real abundance.
In addition to purchasing them at the Tower for your Glimmer, Vanguard, or Crucible Marks, you can also get them as random rewards for playing PvP matches in the Crucible, which you’re bound to run into at some point, given that a good number of Shaders require Crucible marks to purchase.
There are also a couple of codes that you can enter into the Bungie website to redeem a few shaders for absolutely nothing.

Try these out over at the Bungie Website:
Double Banshee: 7MM-VPD-MHP
Oracle 99: RXC-9XJ-4MH

So now that you’ve gotten your hands on the best damn Shader in the galaxy, it’s time to see how it looks on.

Shaders are applied exactly the same way as Emblems, just head into your Guardians inventory, and heading into the bottom screen, you’ll see an empty slot for your Shader right above your Emblem slot.
Don’t fret too much about your armour before applying the Shader, as Shaders can be reused, added and removed at will. So there’s no need to worry about them being bound to one set of gear. See, just like emblems!

So now that you’ve managed to customize your armour just the way you want it, enjoy being the envy of everyone else from Mercury to Mars!
Armour looking a little off? That might be because unfortunately Shaders can not be applied to every piece of gear. It seems to be hit and miss as to what works, but as a general rule you’ll see the best effect on Uncommon level-gear.

So there you have it, we do find it a bit of a shame that you can’t apply Shaders to each piece of gear individually, as I’m sure we’d see some pretty wacky creations.
Still, for now you can enjoy having a sweet looking set of armour that will really make you the envy of other Guardians.
