Buy Exotic loot using Strange Coins in Destiny

Thought that the only currencies in Destiny were Glimmer and faction Marks? Think again, as hidden away in the dark corners of the galaxy are an ultra rare form of currency which are so valuable that with just a few of them, you can buy yourself some rare and powerful exotic loot! If you know where to look that is.

I’ve never seen any reputable trader accepting these so called ‘strange coins’ before! Aren’t they just useless pieces of junk?
Well no, it may be true that you’ll have a hard time finding a trader in the Tower that will accept this form of currency, but if you know where, and crucially when, to look, you’ll find a mysterious store where you can buy some incredibly powerful items.

The mystery trader in question is Xûr, the Agent of the Nine, who will drift into the Tower every weekend, from Friday to Sunday, bringing with him a selection of Exotic pieces of equipment (one for each class), along with an Exotic weapon and Engram. He’ll also sell some unusual consumables that aid you in gaining weapon skill faster, and some Sparrow upgrades.

So that all seems completely normal and above board so far, but how do we get our hands on some of these ‘Strange Coins’?
Well it’s not so difficult as it turns out, as there are quite a few different opportunities for you to get your hands on them each week, including as rewards from Public Events (once a day), random mission rewards when playing on harder difficulties, occasional blue item drops during combat, Cryptarch item packages when levelling up, strike missions, and most reliably from Weekly Challenges.

The weekly challenge is a mission that, as the name suggests, will be different each week. The reason that the weekly challenge is the best way method of collecting Strange Coins though is that you are rewarded with a number of them for completing the mission on each difficulty, quickly gaining you a good number of Strange Coins when all of them are completed.
Another important point about Strange Coins that we should mention is that they can be exchanged between your characters using the vault, and yep, you can get the weekly challenge reward on each character. So if you have three levelled up characters, you’re netting yourself close to 30 coins each week, and when that’s added to the odd coin you should be getting a hold of from other sources, you should have plenty for that nice Exotic Armour piece or Exotic Weapon that will really let you do some damage.

How much will you need to save up in order to be able to buy some of the best Exotic items that Destiny has to offer? Well depending on what is on offer that week, Xûr will sell you an exotic piece of armor for 13 strange coins, and exotic weapon for 23 strange coins, an exotic engram for 23 Motes of Light, consumables for just one strange coins, and some vehicle upgrades for 23 strange coins.
His prices aren’t cheap, but if you have a number of powerful Guardians at hand you should be able to grind out enough Strange Coins for one or two exotic items each week.

So there you have it, follow these tips and you’ll soon be on your way to having all of the best exotic loot that you can carry! It won’t be easy going but it’s definitely worth investing a little time to between Crucible matches and Strike missions.
