Known as the “Death Stare Stalker”, and the “Green Plughole Pugilist”, Luigi is one of those characters that is somewhat underrated but very dangerous if you know how to make use of him. There are some interesting moves that you can exploit with the overall-wearing sewage overlord. There are a few strategies you can utilize with Luigi in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U, along with some neat combos put together by some advanced players.
The first video comes courtesy of YouTuber Jtails. Things don’t actually get underway until the 3:00 mark, so feel free to skip ahead until then. He makes note of some key things you’ll need in order master Luigi, such as using his downward smash to link into Luigi’s forward-air for a few quick juggle hits, as well as using the short hop instead of the main jump in order to initiate Luigi’s dive-kick combos. Check it out below.
To get the short hop off you just have to tap the jump button.
During the short hops you can initiate dive-kick combos, such as dive-kicking into forward-tilt for quick damage.
You can also dive-kick into smash combos for massive damage. Dive-kick into up-air smash to setup for even more damage.
Luigi also can use dash combos into downward smash for some quick damage and downward smash links perfectly into forward-air attacks for quick damage.
You can see some of these moves on display courtesy of YouTuber Muramishi.
A few other things to keep in mind is dashing in with a downward grab into up-air smash sets up for some additional mid-air combos. However, keep in mind that Luigi lacks reach in mid-air combos, so use them sparingly.
Combos are quick and snappy so it’s important for Luigi to stay on the move.
As far as downsides go… Luigi has some lag coming off certain dash combos and his up ‘B’ attacks. You’re also going to be somewhat vulnerable using the ledge to launch into Luigi’s dive-kick combos, so time those correctly to avoid getting punished by an opponent who will telegraph Luigi’s ledge-flip that works as a combo initiator.
