Pillars of Eternity Guide: How to Complete the His Old Self Quest

Meet Kaenra

When you first get into Copperlane, head past the protesters and over the bridge. The first building to your right is the Goose and Fox, a tavern where you will find Kaenra. She is sitting in the upper right of the tavern near the fireplace. Start talking to her. You will notice that she has facial bruises and she will start talking about her fiance, Purnisc. It’s become apparent to her that her fiance has fallen in with the wrong crowd and has started acting strange. She believes Purnisc is addicted to Svef – a kind of hallucinogenic drug. You’ll be given her engagement ring to give back to Purnisc because she says she’s done with him for good.

Go To Purnisc’s House

 

Leave the tavern and head northwest to the end of the row of houses north of the Marketplace. Enter Punisc’s home. You’ll see a bunch of drug addicts and mercenaries loitering about. Move up and right and you’ll find the room where Purnisc is standing. Talk to him and hand over Kaenra’s ring. He won’t seem too emotional about it. You have a few options in responding to him.

• You can ask him, “You don’t recognize the wedding band you gave Kaenra?” Or state, “No wonder Kaenra’s left you.”
• If you keep pushing him for answers, you can flat out attack him and his six mercenaries. Right before combat starts, he reveals that he isn’t Purnisc, but a shape-shifting wizard named Nyrid.
• Or, you can simply give him the ring and then leave him alone. At this point, your journal will update to “Uncover what happened at Purnisc’s house in Copperlane”
  
  

 Investigate Whats Going On

While in Purnisc’s house, go up and to the left to encounter a mercenary by the stairwell. He’ll block your path and tell you that no one is allowed upstairs. You can…

• Intimidate him if you have a Resolve of 14 or higher.
• Bribe him for 100 cp, which he will take.
• Or, try to walk past him anyways. This will alert all the other mercenaries and a fight will ensue.

Whatever path you choose, you’ll want to head up the stairs and fight the four mercenaries in the bedroom. When you loot them, you’ll find a bronze key. Go to the door to the bottom right of the bedroom and unlock it with the key. In here you’ll find the real Purnisc, who is bloodied and battered, but still alive. Talk to him and you’ll learn that Purnisc was a Svef dealer and held back some money to his supplier. The supplier sent the wizard, Nyrid to get the rest of the money and beat up Purnisc. Purnisc tells you he would be grateful if you killed Nyrid and the rest of the mercenaries.

Dealing With Nyrid

Head back downstairs and confront Nyrid. From here, you have two options with how to deal with him.

Option 1: Make a deal with Nyrid and kill Purnisc.
Tell Nyrid that if he gives you a discount on Svef, you will walk away from the situation. He asks you to kill Purnisc as a show of good faith. Walk upstairs, use the attack icon on Purnisc and murder him. Go back downstairs and tell Nyrid that the deed is done. You now also have a discount on Svef. If you choose this option, Kaenra will have left the tavern and the quest will be completed.

Option 2:Kill or capture Nyrid
Attack Nyrid and fight his posse of mercenaries. If you have a dungeon built in your Stronghold he will surrender when near death and be sent off to Caed Nua. You can also just flat out kill him and his men. Either way, once you are done head back upstairs and talk to Purnisc again.

Conclusions

When you talk to Purnisc, he’ll ask you if you can help him smooth things over with Kaenra. You can respond with the following:

• “Kaenra sent me here in the first place.”
• “Perhaps you should trust her to make her own decisions rather than lie to her.”
• “Don’t push your luck Purnisc”
• “Sorry, but I think I’ve done enough.”
• [Leave] “We’ll see”

If you decide to help him out – whether you’re lying or not – you can agree to go talk to Kaenra. Depending on your actions up till this point, your conclusion will be slightly different. Whatever conclusion you get, you will receive the Amulet of Unwavering Resolve from Kaenra and 1,800 party experience.

If you tell Kaenra what happened and use a Passionate or Benevolent response, she’ll agree to try to fix things with Purnisc. This will result in the couple getting back together and a discount when buying things from Purnisc. If you don’t try to change her mind about Purnisc, she will leave Defiance Bay and no discount will appear with Purnisc.
