Dragon City Walkthrough

Dragon City Unofficial Guide by Mongoose General for

Dragon City is one of the latest crazes to hit the world of Facebook gaming. The general idea behind it revolves around breeding dragons and fighting enemies using their strength. Although the main theme of the game is dragons, the majority of the game is spent managing your empire to ensure you can focus on breeding and unlocking new dragons. For example, once you have hatched a dragon, you need to create the appropriate habitat for it to live in, and grow food to manage its ravenous hunger and level it up.

Getting Started

You are initially introduced to Deus, the Dragon Master, upon first playing Dragon City. The tutorial walks you through all the basics: Building, Hatching, Feeding and Farming. These sections are explored in more detail below.

You will want to choose the Earth Dragon as your first one as it gives you very high gold generation at this early stage.

Currency

Gold:

Gold is the main currency in Dragon City. It is used to purchase items, including the all-important Dragon habitats and Dragon eggs, as well as things like buildings, decorations and expansions to your city.

How to Earn Gold:

Gold is earned primarily through collecting from your Dragon's habitats. Quite why they produce Gold is a bit of a mystery, but it is not really important. The higher a Dragon's level, the more Gold you earn from its habitat. Dragons up to level 20 can earn you well into the hundreds for every collection.

Note: Habitats have a maximum gold threshold where you will stop earning at a certain point. Most of the high earning dragons live in habitats with a low threshold, preventing you from gaining too much.

Other ways to earn Gold include selling Dragons you may no longer have a use for, as well as items and eggs. Bear in mind that you can also hire friends to help your acquisition of Gold.

Certain Dragons, such as the Jade Dragon, are quick to breed and sell for 100,000 Gold. You can set up your city so that it is focused on producing these Dragons for a quick monetary return.

Build the Stadium at the earliest opportunity so that you can fight in Combat World with your Dragons for an additional way to earn.

Gems:

Gems are the 'premium currency' of Dragon City. That means that the main way to get them is to purchase them using real money. You can use Gems to speed up a variety of processes, perhaps most importantly the egg hatching process. They are also valuable as they can be converted into Gold or Food should you need either of these areas improving.

Other uses for your Gems are to upgrade the Hatchery, allowing it to hold more Eggs, expanding your current city or purchasing access to new islands, and general items.

How to earn Gems:

Unlike a lot of Facebook games, it is possible to earn the premium currency through means other than buying them with real money.

For starters, you get a free Gem every single time you level up. On their own, these won't be enough to make too much difference to your game, but every little helps.

A lot of quests in Dragon City reward you with a Gem. Breeding Hybrid Dragons will normally net you some Gems in reward.

Gems are also earned in the Stadium and Combat World Leagues - as long as you win.

Complete the various parts of the Book of Dragons to earn Gems as each one is ticked off. 5 Gems are given for completing the Legendary Dragons collection.

On Mondays, you have an additional opportunity to earn Gems. You can win up to 5 Gems in a draw - so make sure you check in each and every Monday to increase your chances of winning big. Similarly, if you log in every day, you can earn rewards, depending on how many consecutive days you have been logging in for.

Finally, you can get 'free' Gems for taking part in surveys and participating in certain offers. These are listed by clicking on the 'Earn Gems' button at the top of the screen.

Purchase Gems for the values shown below:

    - 25 Gems: $2
    - 65 Gems: $5
    - 140 Gems: $10
    - 300 Gems: $20
    - 800 Gems: $50
    - 1700 Gems: $100

Food:

Food is primarily gained through farming, which you can read more about in the section below. You can also get it by completing quests.

EXP:

Experience Points are one of the many rewards for completing quests. It is important for leveling up and gaining access to more buildings and dragons - an important part of the game.

Although there is an intial level cap in Dragon City, you can extend this by building temples. The Magic Temple raises the level cap of Dragons to Level 20 from Level 15 and it becomes available at the general Level 25. The Noble Temple raises it to 25, available at general Level 20.

Building

In order for your Dragons to flourish, you will need to build the correct habitats for them to live in. All of these can be purchased in the build menu and constructed by clicking on a free space in your kingdom.

Build Menu:

The Build Menus is where you should go to buy everything you need in the game, including Eggs, Habitats, Buildings, Decorations, Expansions and Treasture. You can also use it as a place to store items you no longer need.

Eggs:

Initially, you don't have too many Dragons at your disposal. Other Dragons are unlocked as you progress through the game - most need higher levels before you can get their eggs.

Deus Vault:

The Deus Vault is a building which allows you to purchase formulae for breeding certain types of Dragons. It costs 500,000 Gold to purchase, and this can only be done once you have reached Level 20. Once you have purchased a particular formula, in then becomes possible to breed that particular Dragon.

Hatching

Dragons are hatched from the Hatchery. Makes sense. Click the 'Buy Egg' button to purchase an encapsulated baby dragon. Eggs take a long time to hatch, but you are able to speed up the process using Gems. Once the egg has hatched, you need to choose where to place the dragon. This will be in one of the habitats that you should have constructed to make it feel at home.

The Hatchery can be upgraded three times:

Upgrade 1 (can now hold 2 Dragon eggs): 15 Gems
Upgrade 2 (can now hold 3 Dragon eggs): 30 Gems
Upgrade 3 (can now hold 4 Dragon eggs): 60 Gems

Feeding

All of the Dragons in your kingdom need to be fed regularly to keep them healthy. To do this, click on the habitat, and then on the dragon. You should see a big Feed button below its picture. Click this to Feed it. You can keep clicking until you run out of Feed. This will cause the dragon to level up.

Farming

In order to generate food, you will need a Farm. Click the Farm and then the 'Grow Food' button to begin. All the crops have their own strengths and weaknesses. Crops take time before you can harvest them. Generally, the longer they take to grow, the greater the rewards that you gain when they are harvested. All you have to do is click on the farm once the food is ready to collect it. It will then be added to your Feed stocks.

Dragon Types and Breeding

There are 9 different types of dragons that you can breed. These are:

Earth, Fire, Water, Plant, Electric, Ice, Metal, Dark and Legend.

Dragon Breeding:

As explained earlier, only a few Dragon Eggs are available to purchase from the outset in Dragon City. Others can be unlocked as you progress through the levels, but there are also many which require you to successfully breed two Dragon types to create. A guide to this is below, instructing on which combination of dragons are required to produce certain other types.

The first thing that you need is the parent dragons. For this, you will have to purchase your first egg. Through purchasing eggs, you are able to tick off the Plant, Fire, Earth, Water, Electric, Ice, Metal and Dark Dragons. Some of these require higher levels before you can buy them.

Dragons can start to breed at Level 4. They change their appearance at Level 4 and Level 7. A lot of the fun with Dragon City is about experimenting with different breeds. Although, if you want to avoid ending up with the embarassing Poo Dragon, you can follow our guide below!

Legendary Hybrid Dragons:

The dragons below take some serious effort to produce. A lot of luck is involved in producing them, and the dragon types listed below are intended as a guide only as there is still alot of mystery surrounding them.

Legendary Dragon:
Cool Fire and Soccer Dragons

Crystal Dragon:
Cool Fire and Soccer Dragons

Mirror Dragon:
Gummy and Cool Fire Dragons

Wind Dragon:
Gummy and Cool Fire Dragons OR Soccer and Cool Fire Dragons

Pure Dragons

These have been added in a recent update. Pure Dragons use all of the legendary hybrids that you may have got.

To produce a Pure Dragon, you can use any combination of legendary hybrid dragons, those are Legendary, Crystal, Mirror and Wind Dragons.

Pure Element Dragons

To be able to produce a Pure Element dragon, you need to have a Pure Dragon first. You must mix a Pure Dragon with one of the elemental dragons. You can see this below where it makes more sense:

Pure Plant Dragon:
Pure and Plant Dragons

Pure Fire Dragon:
Pure and Fire Dragons

Pure Earth Dragon:
Pure and Earth Dragons

Pure Water Dragon:
Pure and Water Dragons

Pure Electric Dragon:
Pure and Electric Dragons

Pure Ice Dragon:
Pure and Ice Dragons

Pure Metal Dragon:
Pure and Metal Dragons

Pure Dark Dragon:
Pure and Dark Dragons

It takes 48 hours to breed a Pure Dragon, and another 48 hours to hatch them. Of course, this means that you won't be able to breed or hatch any other dragons at the same time, so make sure your other Dragons are sufficient to keep things ticking over in battle until all is complete.

Some Dragons can only be gained through playing the Spell Game as part of the 'Dragon Potion' quest activity. These are:

Butterfly Dragon:
Get 10 Potions

Fossil Dragon:
Get 10 Potions

You can also get the Tropical, Blizzard and Star Dragons at 3, 5 and 7 Potions respectively, but these dragons are also available through breeding. Note that each draw in the Spell Game comes with a 6 hour cooldown time, which you can speed up by spending Gems. Every free draw that you take has a low chance of netting you the top prize of a Spell Book/Potion. To give yourself a moderate chance, you have to spend 50,000 Gold, and for a 100 percent chance, 20 Gems. It is very hard, if not impossible, to succeed without spending some gems when the Dragon Potion quest is available (it is time restricted).

TIP: You should focus on breeding Medieval and Alpine dragons as it can produce such a variety of hybrids.

Dragon Black Market

The Dragon Black Market is a minigame which allows you to pick from a pack of six Dragons, five of which you can see, and one of which is a mystery. Based on this, you make the decision to purchase the list, at which point you are able to choose from six boxes. From this box, the game picks a dragon for you at random. If you don't like the one you get, you can choose another for 10 Gems. You always get the Special Dragon last and the Mystery Dragon before the Special Dragon.

See the Dragon Types and Breeding section for a full list of the Dragons in Dragon City - this will give you an indication of the types of Dragon that you can expect to find in the Dragon Black Market before you spend any of your Gems.

Expansions

Expanding your Dragon City is a key part of the game and one which becomes essential very quickly. You can buy Expansions with Gold or Gems, depending on what you have available at the time. Updates

As Dragon City has been a popular game for a long time now, it has also received regular updates from the game's developers. Below you can see a list of all the Dragons that have been added to the game to date, as well as the additional buildings below:

Spicy Dragon:
The Spicy Dragon was added to Dragon City in May 2012. You can breed it by combining Fire and Plant Dragons (this can also result in a Firebird dragon). It takes 10 hours to hatch and costs 150 Gems if you purchase it. You can sell it for 5,000 Gold.

Storm Dragon:

Guide to Combat

Combat is an important part of Dragon City if you want to earn enough Gold and Gems to keep things moving in your city. The combat works based on a series of strengths and weaknesses that each Dragon possesses. Learn this, and you unlock the key to doing well in battle.

Having built the Stadium, you are then able to take part in combat tournaments. These involve you picking 2 or 3 dragons on your team, to fight against an opponent with the same number. You take it in turns to have an attack. As you will see below, it is important to pick a balanced set of dragons so that you have some that are strong against a variety of opposition. You can fight in one tournament every 12 hours and can also battle other players by selecting the Globe icon and choosing Combat World. You can play in Combat World three times every 6 hours, so much more regularly than the tournaments.

The basics:

Essentially, each dragon just attacks until one runs out of health. There is no way to reduce the speed at which your dragon gets damaged, by increasing defense, for example. Each type of Dragon varies in terms of its maximum health and its resistance to certain types of damage, but once the dragon has been born, you have no control over this.

If you come up against a dragon and your current one is weak against it, you can swap it out for another in your team, at the cost of a turn. It depends on just how weak the dragon is as to whether this is worth it or not.

Level your dragons up to get access to new, stronger attacks!

Attacking:

When attacking, you have a chance of dealing a certain multiplier on the standard attack amount. For example, a Critical hit, given by a dragon that is strong against another which is weak, will earn 2x damage. You can see the other similar effects that it is possible to get below:

Normal Damage:
1x

Critical Damage:
2x

Weak Damage:
.5x

Immune:
0x

As stated above, the type of dragon you are using and the type you are up against effects which of these you receive.

Picking the Right Dragon

Making sure you are sensible in your choice of dragon before going into battle will help avoid any silly losses. Each dragon has strengths and weaknesses, and you can see these in the table below:

Earth Dragons:
Strong Against: None
Weak Against: Ice, Water and Metal
Resistant To: Electric and Fire
Resisted By: Metal and Water

Water Dragons:
Strong Against: Earth, Fire and Electric
Weak Against: Fire and Dark
Resistant To: Earth, Water and Plant
Resisted By: Ice

Fire Dragons:
Strong Against: Ice, Water and Plant
Weak Against: Water and Electric
Resistant To: Ice, Metal, Plant and Fire
Resisted By: Metal, Earth and Fire

Metal Dragons:
Strong Against: Ice and Earth
Weak Against: Electric
Resistant To: Fire, Earth and Metal
Resisted By: Electric and Fire

Ice Dragons:
Strong Against: Earth
Weak Against: Fire and Metal
Resistant To: Water
Resisted By: Fire

Plant Dragons:
Strong Against: Water
Weak Against: Earth and Ice
Resistant To: Dark
Resisted By: Fire

Electric Dragons:
Strong Against: Fire and Metal
Weak Against: Water
Resistant To: Electric and Metal
Resisted By: Earth

You can find out the element for your dragon by looking at its stats screen. The element you want to pay attention to is the one that is shown first on the stats screen. This should allow you to pick your dragon sensibly.

Legendary Dragons

Legendary Dragons do not have weaknesses. They are resistant to any normal attacks (shown with a fist in game) and do not have weaknesses to any element attacks.

Guide to Farming

Farming is a necessity to get enough food for your dragons to level up and become more powerful - or more importantly to earn you more Gold.

Farms:

Farms are the standard way to grow food for your dragons. You can build a lot of these and upgrade them, depending on what your Dragon City level is. You can see the Farm types listed below, along with how much they cost and the amount of EXP they get you:

Food Farm::
This is unlocked at Level 1, costs 100 Gold and earns 100 EXP.

Big Food Farm:
This is unlocked at Level 8, costs 25,000 Gold and earns 25,000 EXP.

Huge Food Farm:
This is unlocked at Level 18, costs 500,000 Gold and earns 250,000 EXP.

What to Grow

You will want to think carefully about the food you should grow in your city, as picking the wrong crop can be a waste of time and effort. The better farms listed above can grow different food, more quickly and with a greater reward. You should pick the type of crop based on how long you are going to be away from Dragon City for - if you are leaving the game overnight, you may as well plany a long crop which will be ready when you get back and give you a good reward. If you will be at your computer the whole time, go for shorter crops.

Dragon Bell:
This is grown at the Food Farm, takes 30 seconds to harvest, costs 50 Gold and gives you 10 Food and 25 EXP. Food per hour: 1200. Cost Per Food: 5 Gold.

Hot Dragon Chili:

Star Shines:
This is grown at the Huge Food Farm, takes 48 hours to harvest, costs 5 million Gold (!) and gives you 100,000 Food and 2,500,000 EXP. Food per hour: 2083. Cost Per Food: 50 Gold.

TIP: Pick your crop based on the time you have, and the Gold available. If you can put the effort in, the quick crops are best. Going away for a while? Save up your Gold to buy some of the high-end crops to give you a nice windfall when you return.

Gifts

A good way to skip some of the hassle above is to send gifts (and receive them) from your friends in Dragon City. It is possible to gift each other 1,000 Food each day, which is not too shabby! Use the Gift menu to do this and set up reciprocal gifting with your friends to add a nice little bonus to your game.

Cheats and Hacks

There are no legitimate cheats available for Dragon City. If it seems like people are cheating, the chances are they have just put a lot of money into the game. You may see of some people claiming to have 'hacked' the game. Any method of cheating or hacking that requires you to download software or give out your account details is highly likely to result in your losing your account and all your hard work in Dragon City. To succeed at the game, follow the tips and information in this guide, or spend your cash on advancing.

Tips

Dragon Breeding Tips:

When breeding dragons, remember that mixing any two Elemental types will produce a new type of dragon. This makes it possible to get very creative with combining dragon types, if you want the surprise of not knowing what will come out of the mix.

Some elemental combinations, using our guide above, for example, can produce multiple dragon types as the end result. This is down to chance and you often just have to persevere to get the one you want.

You cannot breed Fire and Ice, Water and Dark, Plant and Electric, Electric and Ice, Electric and Plant, Ice and Fire, Ice and Electric, Ice and Dark, Dark and Water or Dark and Ice dragons together. It just doesn't work because their two elements are too opposed.

Other Tips:

Don't be afraid to sell dragons that are not earning you enough or pulling their weight. While it is easy to get attached to them, some dragons can earn you large payouts should you choose to sell them.

Collect your Gold! Be sure to check regularly to make sure your hatcheries are not filled up with Gold. If you don't clear the Gold into your coffers on a regular basis, you are wasting all that hard-earned money!
