Basic Strategy

Grappling

Grappling can best be utilized as either a defensive or offensive measure to slow the pace down in your favor. Depending on your fighter’s style, it may be the only effective method in doing significant damage to the opponent while keeping yourself out of harm’s way. A successful result of most standing grapples is that the fighter on the receiving side of the maneuver will end up on his back, thus shifting the balance of power in the match. While locking up, you can either use a combination of head and body shots to separate yourself from the opponent or a takedown maneuver that will place you in an advantageous ground position. Once on the ground, you can either continuously work multiple sections of the body with a variety of well placed blows or lock the body part into a submission hold.

Hints and Tips

  1. As a defensive strategy, grapple with an opponent whenever they go into a flurry of continuous combination strikes that you are having trouble blocking. This works especially well for the slower characters of the game that can’t keep up with lightning-quick sparring or for the fighters with a wrestling or ground-based combat style.
  2. When trying to come from behind in a fight, use the combination strike grapple rather than the takedown. Your opponent will need to be savvy enough to block each of your multiple punches or kicks, whereas they will only have to counter one takedown maneuver.
  3. Before attempting the grapple, you should throw your opponent off-guard with a few strikes to keep the odds in your favor that he won’t strike first or counter. You should also wait to grapple until after the opponent has made his attempt to hit you so that you don’t walk right into a combination.
  4. After dropping an opponent with a combination strike, either quickly back away as soon as the maneuver is over or prepare for a counter evasion since it is almost guaranteed that your opponent is going to try to swipe at you from the ground.
  5. Use the takedown grapple if you have one or more sections of the opponents body glowing red from massive injury. This will put you on the ground with him and allow you to be more precise in focusing on that particular area of vulnerability.
  6. If grappling on the ground appears to not be going your way after a long struggle, simply break the hold the next time you gain a position of control. Try weakening the opponent’s arms before returning to the ground so that they will be less successful in fending off your attacks.

Striking

By themselves, the majority of punches, kicks and knee thrusts will not do much to drain an opponent’s health. To really do the most damage, you will have to string them together in such a way as to work around the competition’s blocks and evasions, while hitting the vulnerable areas as often as possible. The timing and area of contact for each strike can range anywhere from a quick jab against the ribs to a roundhouse kick under an opponent’s chin that seems to spin your fighter around for an eternity. The unevenness of combining this wide variety of attacks the will have a disorienting effect on when and where your opponent will need to protect himself.

Hints and Tips

  1. When going toe-to-toe with someone in an exchange of sparring maneuvers, keep the rhythm of alternating between blocks and strikes consistent so as not to leave yourself open. Do not try to strike an opponent as he is striking you, instead you should wait until you have successfully blocked a combination or there is a pause in their assault before you start hitting back.
  2. Until you have mastered striking someone in an effective and continuous manner, use a rule of three for hitting an opponent in between each of your blocks. Make sure to mix it up between striking the body twice before dealing a single blow to the opponent’s face and vice versa.
  3. If you are able to execute a combo effectively enough to start accumulating hit points off to the side of the screen, do not stop your current method and area of assault until the opponent is able to counter.
  4. If you are having trouble getting past the opponent’s blocking or evasive maneuvers, use a few of the strikes that combine with the step movement. This will allow you a better chance of making solid contact and open the door for further combinations.
  5. When your health is low and the opponent is consistently on the attack with heavy blows, use your fastest strikes in a repetitive combo that will quicken the pace and cut off his ability to build up enough energy to deliver harder hitting attacks.
  6. To successfully deliver the charge attack, step away a few times to get buy yourself enough time to build up the momentum required. If timed it correctly, the opponent should be moving in your direction as the hit makes contact and at a distance where you are just out of his reach.

Submission

Submission or bone-breaking maneuvers can cause by far the most damage to your opponent’s health, but they are also the tallest mountain to climb when it comes to execution. Your opponent will need to either be weakened or caught off-guard to put him a position that these holds can applied and then you will have to be faster on the stick when applying damage. The upside to these maneuvers is that you localize them to a specific limb or area of the body, thus draining the opponents health faster, and they can be used to quickly put competitors in the red early on in the fight. The downside is that not all fighters can execute these moves effectively and opponents can often counter these holds into submission moves of their own.

Hint and Tips

  1. When an opponent positions you in the final stage of a submission hold, use your palm to wiggle the joystick back and forth as an escape tactic rather than just your fingers.
  2. When attempting to string multiple submission moves together during the same takedown, strike the opponent in the area you are targeting next in between each one. This will decrease his chances of being able to counter you, soften up the limb you are planning to do damage to and keep a consistent drain on the opponent’s health.
  3. A submission is one of the best ways to finish a fight. Even with a decent amount of health left, the multiple counts of damage you can execute from the takedown maneuver to the actual hold will surely drain whatever is left of your opponent’s bar.
  4. If your opponent is constantly escaping or countering your holds, then use striking moves while on the ground before entering rush mode as a final assault to better ensure that the maneuver sticks this time.
  5. While locked up in the submission hold, use the adrenaline button when your bar is halfway full to give it the extra boost needed to finish the maneuver. This is especially useful when playing against fighters who seem to be quicker on the sticks than you are.

Countermeasures

When only a single strip of health remains in your life bar, knowing how to counter and block your opponent’s attacks is all that stand between you and defeat. Reversing a strike in particular will deal more damage than a normal punch or kick and on the ground, countering will help you escape a submission one only to put in the position to deliver one of your own. The key to mastering countermeasures is all about timing and opportunity, which is most easily recognized by watching and learning the movements of your opponent as he attacks you. Learning this defense mechanism before any offensive ones should be your first priority as it can help you last a whole fight without taking a single loss in health when used correctly.

Hints and Tips

  1. One of the prime situations for countering and re-countering attacks when one opponent lays on the ground while the other stands over him. As the standing player, you should keep your finger on the counter button if you are approaching for a ground attack and as the ground player you should be ready to strike out as soon as you hit the floor.
  2. To counter a player who is consistently in a state of blocking, use your charged attack to break open his defense and stun him, then move in for whatever assault you’d like to execute next.
  3. Watch for your opponent to make a forward motion with any of their limbs as a sign of a striking attack in its beginning stages. When you see this movement, press the counter button immediately as it will be help you evade the quicker assaults. Slower attacks will be more obvious, as your opponent will need to rear back first before delivering the blow.
  4. The easiest attack to counter is a kicking strike, especially to the ribs. When executing one, be prepared for your leg caught and move your finger to the counter button as it is in motion to avoid probable retaliation.
  5. When severely injured, keep the red areas of your body protected at all costs or step away from each your opponent’s attacks. By consistently blocking one area, the opposing fighter will eventually focus in on another thus giving you the opportunity to draw him into a counter maneuver.

Finding the Weakness

Each competitor you face can more easily be defeated by recognizing their specific weakness, whether it be one they already possessed or one created during the match is up to you. The body icon at the top of the screen is your best indicator as to where the competitor is becoming vulnerable. Based on this it can be determined which of your attacks are working, which of his defenses are failing or both. The more you continue to pound on these vulnerable body parts, the more damage the opponent will take with each attack and the less effect his strikes will be when using these limbs.

Hints and Tips

  1. For an opponent who is consistently blocking, do not give up your striking attack since the constant defense will eventually weaken the competition legs or arms for later submission hold focus.
  2. The head will weaken quicker than the other body parts, so attack this region first if your primary source of offense is striking assaults. You know the tactic is working as soon as your opponent is busted open and bleeding.
  3. Enemies who primarily lash out with kicks or other leg strikes can be knocked off their feet by attacking this region. As soon as your opponent is supporting himself on one leg, make your move and attack his lower extremities once he hits the ground.
  4. If your opponent is especially aggressive in attacks of every kind, then you can choose to move from each limb one at a time in succession to weaken his entire body overall.

Fighting Style Guide

Boxing

  • Since a boxer will only strike out with his hands, players who use these fighters will be at a disadvantage when it comes to reach. You will need to attack opponents quickly and at close range in order to do significant damage, so keep at a distance until an opening presents itself then step forward into the other fighter and deliver a series of combos before stepping away again.
  • Obviously, boxers will need to stay on their feet to keep the advantage so become adept as possible at blocking and counter-attacking to deliver the most damage possible. This is also useful since a lot of strikes will be exchanged it the period of time it takes for these characters to wear their opponents down with strikes alone.
  • Without the ability to utilize a kick, boxers lose a lot of the combat variety that can factor into confusing an opponent as to how you’ll strike next. Counteract this by regularly switching the area of the body you attack and keeping your combo strung together for longer periods of time to increase the rate of damage.
  • One of the most damaging attacks you can use as a boxer is by grappling the opponent and dealing out a powerful three hit combo. This is especially useful when trying to spar with another boxer who keeps beating you to the punch, literally.
  • Due to the necessity of being evasive as a boxer, since your consistent striking leaves you open to counter-attacks, utilize the rush mode ability when using this fighter more than any other. By slowing things down, especially in the closing moments of the match, it can help you retaliate as much as possible and deal even more damage than normal.
  • Unless you are in the straddling position, avoid ground attacks as much as possible to avoid the possibility of being put in a submission hold. Break away from these situations whenever you have control and return to a standing position to protect your arms from being damaged.
  • One effect string of attacks is to lock up with the opponent and execute a powerful three-hit combo that puts them on the ground, then get into the straddling position on top of them and vigorously pound their face into the mat. Make sure that when you first lock up with them on the ground that you are prepared to block their escape attempt.
  • Although you should move back and forth consistently between attacking the body and the head, it’s usually more prudent to keep the slim majority of strikes directed at an opponents face. Not only because it is the weakest area, but also because it will allow you more openings when pummeling the other fighter in ground positions.

Jiu-Jitsu

  • Your primary focus when using a fighter trained in jiujitsu should be to get your opponent on the mat and work on damaging a specific part of the body. This style in particular will allow you a wide breadth of submission hold for various body parts, so be as exact in your assault as possible.
  • When standing, spend as little time as possible lashing out with strikes unless you are using them to open up your opponent for a rappel attack. Once you are grappling, don’t waste time with the combinations body blows but go straight into a takedown maneuver.
  • If your opponent is especially adept at knocking you to the mat, like a boxer for example, use the grapple button from the ground to apply a leg-lock submission hold when he walks over. Continue weakening his lower extremities with submission holds from the straddling position.
  • One of the fastest ways to gain a victory with this fighting style is from the chest to chest ground position. While in this state, maintain control by using two or three strikes to the face in between submission holds that focus on the neck and arms of your opponent.
  • If your opponent is constantly wiggling away from you or only allowing for one submission hold to be applied during each ground exchange, use striking maneuvers and take downs to fill your rush bar. Once it’s at maximum capacity, drop the other fighter to the mat, then use the ability to slow things down and block his escape attempts as a means to executing more submission holds in a row.
  • One of the easiest ways to start wearing your opponent down with submission holds is by grappling with him in first moments of the match and immediately applying a guillotine choke. This is one of the few submission maneuvers that can be applied from a standing position and it can lead to other holds, like the triangle choke, as long as you are able to block the other fighter’s escape attempt.
  • The majority of striking attacks will be slower than average when using this style so your best bet is primarily using kicks. Unlike punches, they have both reach and power, which will keep your opponent at a distance until you are ready use a takedown.
  • Demian Reis is the only fighter in this game trained in any type of jiujitsu, so if this is your preferred style then it will make it easier to also discover the individual character’s advantages as well. For instance, check his command list for combinations that utilize both strikes and grappling attacks to assault your opponents on both fronts.

Judo

  • Characters in this game that are trained in judo will primarily focus their attacks on the upper portion of their opponent’s body. They will also be proficient in executing some of the more devastating takedown maneuvers that can then lead to submission holds.
  • The majority of judo-style submission holds will focus on causing the greatest possible damage to an opponent’s arms. This is both useful in the submission process as well as weakening the other fighter’s blocking defenses against striking and grapple assaults.
  • Striking attacks with this player will come at a lower velocity but they will carry enough power to cause damage when strung together as combos. The more you connect with these hits, the faster they will be delivered further down in the combination sequence.
  • Do not enter into a sparring match with players who are known for their quickness as you will be unable to up with them. Block their first few attacks at the beginning of the match, then go straight into a takedown maneuver to immediately drain their health significantly.
  • Since injuring a player’s arms from the ground is primarily where you will excel using the judo-style, use your strikes effectively to damage the next vulnerable area of your opponent, his head. Once you have sufficiently softened up the other fighter’s blocking defenses, you will be able to make a bigger impact on his face region without the fear of a counter-attack.
  • Judo takedown maneuvers immediately put you chest-to-chest with your opponent on the ground. Once you have laid him out like this, move into the straddling position for a more effective approach to striking his face and using the devastating arm bar submission.
  • If a competitor continues managing to escape from you on the ground position, use your charged attack to open him up for follow-up takedown damage. Unlike most charged attacks, the one associated with judo tends to be delivered at a more accelerated speed thus raising the likelihood of connecting with it.
  • The only character in this game who uses a judo fighting-style is Tomo Hashimoto, so if this is your preferred style then you should also utilize the individual advantages of the character. For example, his ability to cartwheel over a fallen opponent to reach the upper body area immediately and apply a submission.

Karate

  • The karate fighting-style is best applied to breaking an opponent down across all sections of their body using a flurry of punches, kicks and kneeing strikes. The only weakness for characters utilizing this combat technique is during the ground game, so try to keep yourself and the other fighters standing for as long as possible.
  • Kicking appears to work best under this style of fighting, especially when connecting combos between different parts of the opponent’s body. For example, a few well-placed shots to the abdomen will cause enough damage to put the other fighter on guard in that region so that you can then follow up with a spinning kick to his face.
  • If an opponent pins you to the mat, use the opportunity to cause continuing damage to his body by executing blows to the abdomen with your strengthened knee strikes.
  • Kicking after a strafe will execute some of the more varied and damaging maneuvers in the game. They can cause you to spin or come off the ground completely during the execution and leave your opponent clueless as to where the hit will land.
  • While a fighter trained in karate cause the most damage by lashing out with his legs, the punches he delivers are also quite useful during combat. They come in quick succession and when directed at the face, they can open up the other fighter’s defense for a more powerful kicking strike.
  • The majority of karate’s offensive maneuvers in this are most powerful when directed at the abdomen so try to keep the majority of your combos in this area. Even when attack from a straddling position on the ground, blows can be delivered directly to the midsection rather than to the face, which is how most other fighters operate.
  • Unlike other character who rely primarily on striking attacks, the karate-style of fighting also allows for an effective takedown during the grapple process. Take advantage of this whenever possible if not enough of your standing strikes are landing to attempt a new flurry of attacks from the ground.
  • Yuki Hashimoto is the only character in the game that utilizes the karate fighting-style, so take advantage of his individual advantages as well if you prefer this technique. For instance, his charged attack can cover a good distance of the ring and occurs with less warning than most of the others available.

Kick Boxing

  • Much like regular boxing, kick boxing’s ability to wear an opponent down with numerous standing strikes is almost overshadowed by the disadvantages apparent during ground combat. Unlike regular boxing however, this fighting-style allows for more variation by enabling you lash out with both your hands and feet. Do not forget this advantage during your matches or opponents will quickly learn the best way in which to counter you.
  • Combination attacks are the best way to defeat opponents under this style. As soon as an opponent begins blocking your kicks, quickly switch over to a string of jabs and vice versa. The more powerful blows are effective as well, but they should be used sparingly so as not to disrupt your momentum.
  • When grappling, use the kicking combination as an effective three-hit sequence and grapple your opponent once his on the ground to continue pummeling him. This tactic will almost surely bring the other fighter’s face region into the red early on in the match.
  • Use punches and kicks after strafing as effective disorienting measure against your opponent’s blocking defense. In either strike, they can be alternated to attack the abdomen and head repeatedly and powerfully.
  • Some of the most damage you can impose on a player is in the straddling position as each of your shots seems to thunder against the other fighter’s face through the use of fist and elbow strikes. Once the opponent begins to continuously block you however, bring him back to his feet while sustaining the grapple and apply a combination to put him on the mat again.
  • If you are facing off against a particularly quick-paced fighter, use your punching combos as the primary strike in delivering damage to him. Unlike the kicking combos, your fighter can string more of them together and execute them with more speed.
  • Since the majority of your more powerful kicks require time and opportunity, use a stepping motion to defend yourself against opposing strikes rather than putting up a block. If you are having trouble escaping from the other fighter, due to his reach or the size of the ring, go into a grapple and put him on the ground, then back away to prepare your next assault.
  • Avoid using the charged attack unless you are positive it will land. It is often blocked and requires too much time to build up the energy required for execution.

MMA

  • As you would expect from the titular fighting style, MMA-trained competitors are arguably the strongest performing characters in the game. This is due to their proficiency in all areas of combat, whether it be in striking, takedowns or submission holds.
  • When striking, MMA fighters are able to effectively deliver blows using their fists, feet and knees. Regardless of where the hit comes from, this style guarantees that the attack will possess an impressive amount of both speed and power.
  • Feel free to confidently cycle back and forth between any of your MMA fighter’s strikes combos. Each one has the potential to occur quickly and with impact, so use them in any order or amount you choose to disorient an opponent’s defensive strategy.
  • Since MMA fighters are trained to compete from any position, use this to your advantage when attacking a specific body part. For example, you can use a string of strong kicks at the beginning of the match to weaken an opponent’s leg until he begins to defend the area more consistently. Once this happens, use a take down to put the competition on its back and apply a knee bar submission hold to finish off the limb.
  • MMA fighters are adept at striking or vying for position on the ground, so you should try to make use of this advantage before applying a submission hold. After taking an opponent down to the canvas, move into a straddling position and deliver blows aimed at his face with your powerful fists. Either the head or the arms blocking the head of the competition will be softened up in no time.
  • A fighter trained in the MMA style is best utilized by assaulting his opponents with strikes, throws or holds that occur quickly and often. With this in mind, try to avoid the charged attack as much as possible to avoid slowing down the momentum your character requires.
  • The only fighter in this game trained in the MMA style of combat is Jack Saxon so learn and use his individual advantages during the match as well. For instance, Saxon’s long legs will allow you to deliver kicks from a further distance than other characters.
  • When it comes to submissions, an MMA fighter is well versed in both applying and countering these types of maneuvers. If an opponent is consistently blocking your attempts to lock in a submission hold, purposely drop your defenses so that they can apply one of their own then execute a reversal when the timing is right.

Muay Thai

  • Fighters trained in Muay Thai are able to utilize offensive assaults during any of the possible scenarios presented in this game, but their real strength is in beating opponents to a bloody pulp with their hands and feet. Deal out a high rate of striking attacks from either a standing or ground position and switch between them frequently to disorient the competition’s defensive tactics.
  • When pummeling an opponent from the ground position, stick primarily to blows delivered via the fist as they tend to be more devastating in damage and can be dealt out in quick succession. While these fighters are able to execute submission holds during these situations, choosing to simply hand out a beating as often as possible will pay off in the long run.
  • While these characters are equally fast with their hands and feet, fighters trained in muay thai are able to make more precise attacks through the execution of a well-placed kick. Within a few seconds you can deliver three kicks in quick succession that move from the head to the abdomen then down to the legs.
  • Whereas a muay thai fighter’s legs or knees can be exact in their strikes, the character’s powerful fists and elbows are able to deal out severe damage in larger quantities. Keep these attacks aimed at any region above their waist and execute a two-hit combo every time for additional damage at a higher rate.
  • A good tactic when using these fighters is to keep your opponent at bay with various combos and licks until half of their life has been depleted. Now grapple with them and execute a three-hit knee combo to put them on the mat, then use a takedown as they get to their feet and pummel them repeatedly about the head.
  • Use the three-hit knee combo during the grapple to lay your opponent out with a may thai fighter, then enter into a leg lock submission hold to damage the competitor’s ability to stay balanced. This will better help you sweep his feet out from under him during a string of kicking attacks.
  • Malaipet is the only character trained in the muay thai fighting style, so learn and use his individual advantages during the match, such as his devastating charged attack.
  • Make frequent use of rush mode when fending off an enemy’s striking attacks to aid you in countering them. The muay thai fighter’s reversal assault is usually extremely damaging in its own right.

Savate

  • The fighting style of savate works most effectively when powerful kicks are used to strike high up on a standing opponent’s body or damaging their limbs as they lay on the ground. Avoid ground combat as much as possible when controlling these fighters and use their long-legged attacks instead to keep grappling opponents at bay.
  • Pierre Matiss is the only fighter trained in savage style so learn and use his individual advantages during each match. For example, he has the unique ability to jump into the air and stomp on the head of his downed opponent.
  • While powerful knee and kicking strikes are a savate fighter’s bread an butter, the quick jabs they can employ are useful in their own way. For example, by throwing a few rare display of punches into the abdomen area of your opponent you can distract him long enough to execute a devastating roundhouse kick that might have easily been blocked before.
  • The most effective striking maneuvers these fighters have are the two-hit kick combos that deliver one blow each to the face and body. This can usually stun an opponent long enough for the more damaging kicks that you must execute after a stepping movement.
  • For the amount of damage it causes, the time it takes in executing a savate fighter’s charged attack is not worth the risk of being attacked halfway through. Only utilize this strike if you have a considerable lead or the opponent is much slower than you are.
  • Use rush mode as often as possible to aid you in better countering an opponent’s striking attacks. The reversals that savate fighters execute cause substantial damage that will help you regain the lead during a match.
  • When attacking from the ground position, use your knees more often than your arms to strike an opponent’s midsection. Savate fighters are able to completely weaken these areas more quickly, allowing you to then focus on additional limbs to damage.
  • The exceptionally long reach that these characters have with their kicking attacks should be used more often to fend off grapplers rather than just trying to reverse their holds.

Wrestling

  • The two areas in which wrestlers excel are attacks executed against opponents from the ground and the takedowns that put them there. When using these characters, avoid staying on your feet for as long as possible by locking up with the other fighter when the match begins.
  • Since the majority of a wrestler’s offense consists of maintaining control and weakening specific areas of an opponent’s body, a good place to begin focusing your attacks is on the arms and upper body region. This will lower the likelihood of being countered and utilizes the more powerful of your submission holds.
  • Wrestlers in this game possess the most unique and damaging takedowns in comparison to the other fighters. These maneuvers allow your character pinpoint a specific limb and use it to throw your opponent to the ground so learn which ones target which areas for more effective damage strategy.
  • When pinning your opponent to the ground flip and turn him as often as possible into different positions. This will allow you to perform an even wider variety of submission holds and disorient the other fighter as far as planning a defense.
  • When you are actually forced to engage in striking combat, try to be as exact as possible when choosing an area to attack. Since your kicks and punches are not as effective as the average fighter’s, you can at least add additional damage to the body part you plan to target for submission purposes later.
  • When blocking against striking attacks, try to counter the assault rather than block it if possible. This will keep your arms from weakening in their ability to apply holds and it will allow you to stun the opponent for a follow up takedown maneuver.

Facing the Competetion

The strategies listed below should not be considered an exact blue print for how to win a match, because not every fighter will react the same way every time. The following is more of a series of suggestions in the event you are having trouble with a particular opponent or if you are using a fighter whose offensive strengths are not to your liking and you need a general battle plan.

St. John Ackland / Ilya Kilmenko

Fighting Style: Wrestling

  1. Back away from your opponent as soon as the match begins or after returning to a standing position. This will allow you to keep a safe distance during a wrestler’s first opportunity to execute a grappling takedown and turn the momentum in their favor.
  2. When the wrestler move towards you in an attempt to get within grappling range, evade him by executing a strike that require a step sideways or backward. If you make successful contact with this attack, immediately follow it up with a series of combos.
  3. Make a point to strike more towards your opponent’s upper body so that even if they block you will at least cause damage to their arms. This will weaken their ability to apply effective submission in the event they get you to the ground.
  4. If the wrestler is blocking too much for you to cause significant damage or using counter-measures that succeed more times than not, then wait for an opportunity to lock up into a grappling position. If possible, use a tactic that applies combo strikes or other maneuvers that break the hold rather than moving the other fight to the ground.
  5. It is advisable to keep away from a downed wrester, as they will use the opportunity to quickly apply a leg lock. If it’s necessary to attack them in this position, be prepared to counter an attack before attempting one of your own.

Dante Algearey / Jerome Banner

Fighting Style: Kickboxing

  1. Use counter-attacks when fending off the strikes of a kickboxer as a means to put them down or in a position that is more to your benefit. Since you never know how or where these fighters will lash out, this will allow you to escape combos more quickly than continuously guessing which area to block.
  2. Wait until these fighters have finished a combo attempt before moving in for a grapple. The reason being is that you want to lock-up with them as soon as possible before they can slip in a lighting-quick jab or kick.
  3. When grappling with a kickboxer, use a leg takedown maneuver if possible to move the fight to the mat. If your fighter is ill-equipped for ground combat, use a grapple move that will at least knock the opponent over, then quickly approach their downed body and execute a strike to their legs.
  4. Once you are locked up on the ground, execute submission holds that target a kickboxer’s legs and arms. Be sure to strike them often in between these maneuvers and always be ready to counter escape attempts.
  5. If you are using another fighter who relies primarily on striking-attacks, make the best use possible of rush mode to aid you in better countering and reversing sparring situations. You should also start the match by continuously attacking a kickboxer’s upper body, so that he injures his arms while blocking, before shifting focus to his legs.

Yuki Hashimoto

Fighting Style: Karate

  1. If you absolutely have to attack a karate-trained fighter from a standing position, use rush mode to help counter their quickly-executed strikes. You should also focus your kicks and punches on their legs in an attempt to sweep them from under them and move the fight onto the mat.
  2. Since these fighters are proficient with all sorts of strikes, alternate between applying holds to their arms and legs to weaken both at the same time.
  3. Try to grapple with these fighters as often as possible and execute a few strikes while locked up before moving onto the takedown. This will help in slowing the pace and lowering the chances of being caught in a combo or charged attack situation.
  4. When an opponent is knocked down, approach them and apply a move that will either initiate ground combat or one that immediately locks in a submission hold. Try to move in as quickly as possible and be prepared to counter any strike they attempt from the ground.
  5. Whichever area of the karate fighter’s body turns red first should be continuously focused on immediately afterwards. This will help you end the match more quickly, leaving less opportunity for the opponent to escape back to a standing position.

Tomo Hashimoto

Fighting Style: Judo

  1. Keep your distance from judo-trained fighters as much as possible until you are ready to move in for the attack. The reason being is that they are proficient in grappling attacks as well as striking ones, making distance the only guaranteed strategy for preventing both.
  2. If you are forced into a corner or the opponent is too quick for you to step away from striking assaults, block your head when in doubt of which area a judo combatant will target next. These fighters are already inclined to striking the upper areas of their opponents and your head will less resistant to damage than your torso.
  3. Save your uses of rush mode for when you need to counter grapples or offensive ground maneuvers. As long as it’s not during a combo, a judo fighter’s strikes should be slow enough to see coming the first time.
  4. When pinned to the ground, use strikes and reversals to regain control of the situation. You can then either break the hold to return to a standing position or apply a submission, but do not try to continuously block the onslaught of strikes coming at you.
  5. The charged attack delivered by judo-trained fighters will come at quicker speed than those executed by most other fighters. When ever you see them rearing back for this maneuver, immediately put up a block to protect your head rather than risking a counter or evasive step.

Malaipet

Fighting Style: Muay Thai

  1. Keep your face protected as much as possible during matches with muay thai fighters. Their devastating strikes will be able to reduce this area down to red in no time, leaving you at an early disadvantage.
  2. If you have to pick an area of the body to target when facing off against these fighters, choose the arms as they tend to deliver the more strengthened blows.
  3. Do no engage in an exchange of punches while on the mat with muay thai-trained fighters. If they are able to put you in a position where several blows can be delivered in succession from the ground, the damage will be greater than on average.
  4. If the muay thai fighter you are facing is prone to delivering kicks more than punches, be sure to step away from the exchange rather than block or counter. This is because the damage dealt from their feet will come at a faster rate than from their hands.
  5. If you are caught in a string of combos, use rush mode immediately to help you in counteracting the attack. Without the ability to strike you, a muay thai fighter will be unable to effectively mount an offense.

Pierre Matiss

Fighting Style: Savate

  1. Your primary focus when taking on this fighter should be to get his legs as weakened as possible so that less damaged can be delivered from them. Once his kicks are no longer a threat, you can attempt to counter his strikes rather than absorbing damage with blocks.
  2. If you are laying on the ground and Matiss approaches you, either strike out or counter as quickly as possible to avoid the devastating head stomp maneuver.
  3. The reach of Matiss’ legs make it nearly impossible to step away from him effectively during striking attempts. Try to time a side-step evasion, then execute a strike of your own to either follow it up with a combo or grappling maneuver.
  4. Get the savate-trained fighter on the ground as quickly as possible when the match starts. If you can do it with a sweep or leg takedown, then you’ve already taken a huge lead in the fight.
  5. Use rush mode as often as possible when in a standing position with Matiss. They should help you executing countermeasures, which will eliminate one of his only means to cause effective.

Mariano Mendoza / Jens Pulver

Fighting Style: Boxing

  1. If you are quicker-paced striker than the boxer you are up against, keep a steady stream of punches and kicks coming in their direction. Even if they continually block, you’ll at least be weakening their most important asset: their arms.
  2. If you are able to bring these character to the ground, then you’ve pretty much made their ability to fight null and void. Just be sure that you are preparing for them to escape or counter you before each offensive move you make.
  3. Use rush mode as often as possible when in a standing position with these fighters. This will help you in avoiding their devastating combos and their grapple attacks.
  4. Grapple with these fighters as soon as the match starts to keep the match’s momentum in your favor. Once you have locked up with them, either use a combo strike or takedown to continue keeping them from striking out at you.
  5. A boxer will primarily strike out at your face and abdomen so choose either of these two areas for blocking purposes when he starts hitting you with combos.

Demian Reis

Fighting Style: Jiu-Jitsu

  1. Avoid the grappling maneuvers of this fighter at all cost as they can easily lead to a highly-damaging submission hold. If you do end up in this position, switch to rush mode if possible to better help you counteract the hold.
  2. Keep this fighter on his feet for the most part to avoid his numerous submission holds. Be sure to strike out in the same area repeatedly so that he will throw up a block and allow you to damage his arms.
  3. Another time to use rush mode is when you are locked up on the ground. This will help you escape the holds more easily and possibly even reverse them altogether.
  4. Jiu-jitsu fighters have some of the slower striking attacks in the game so opt to counter any combos they throw your way and always be on the look out for their more powerful kicks.

Jack Saxon

Fighting Style: MMA

  1. Since Jack Saxon’s MMA fighting-style is effective across all combat positions, you’re best option is to exploit your own character’s strength’s rather than trying to find Saxon’s weaknesses.
  2. As a wrestler or other ground-based fighter, grapple with Saxon and immediately use a takedown to put him on the mat. You can now target his arms for submission holds which will lower his effectiveness in blocking and striking.
  3. As a boxer or other striking-based fighter keep your combos going for as long as possible and alternate often between Saxon’s body regions. If he manages to bring you to the ground, try to regain position with a counterattack and pummel him with various strikes to the head.
  4. As a judo or other grappling-based fighter use rush mode on a regular basis to aid you in counter Saxon’s strikes. Once you have him stunned or vulnerable, lock into a grapple and execute a takedown, then back away and repeat the process to continue wearing him down.
  5. If you are able to focus on a specific part of Saxon’s body during striking combat, choose the head region as it is the most vulnerable area on any fighter in the game.
