1. Introduction and Controls
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Welcome to the guide for the latest entry in the NBA2K franchise. This guide
will help you master every mode in the game, along with a basic explanation of
many of the game’s features.

When at the Home Menu screen, flick the right analog stick in any direction to
bring up the Main Menu. This will allow you to move between modes easier.

The controls throughout the game are varied based on a variety of factors. For
the sake of simplicity, I will list the controls for basic offense and basic
defense moves. Keep in mind that the wording for the controls was taken
directly from the NBA 2K13 instruction manual.

2. MyPlayer
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Upon booting up the game, the first task you’ll be aske to complete is to
create a MyPlayer account. You’ll need to do this in order to access the game’s
online features. You’ll have to input your birth date, an e-mail address, set
up a username, create your actual player, and then name the player before this
process is complete.

The main screen of MyPlayer hosts a lot of information. On the right side of
the screen will be your player. On the left side of the screen will be your
Gamertag, your personal record, the amount of Virtual Currency you have, and
the cumulative amount of Virtual Currency you’ve earned throughout your entire
NBA 2K13 career.

================
=MyPlayer Store=
================

NBA 2K13 features Virtual Currency. VC is earned by winning games and
completing challenges.

—>APPAREL SHOP<—
This is where you can purchase new clothes for your player. The clothes are
separated into four different categories:

Premium Tops
Plain Tops
Bottoms
Suits

The items in the different categories range in VC price from below 1,000 to
5,000. The Game starts you off with 1,000 VC automatically. This doesn’t leave
you with many clothing options at the beginning of the game, but there are
some items you’ll be able to afford at the beginning.

—>TEAM SHOP<—
Here you can purchase more clothing options, but these ones are based on the
different NBA teams in the game. Once again, the items in this store cost VC.
Every team is represented by their own merch in the game. Whichever team you
chose as your favorite team at the start of the game will always be the first
team shown when you open this menu.

—>ACCESSORY SHOP<—
In this store you can find accessories for your player. There are three
different categories for accessories. Yet again, all the items found in this
store can be purchased with VC.

Gear
Headwear
Jewelry

Jewelry itself is separated into three different categories as well:

Blue Diamond Jewelry Collection
Gold Jewelry Collection
Platinum Jewelry Collection

The jewelry collections can be purchased using Microsoft Points at 2000 (a
little over $20) apiece.

==============
=V.I.P. Stats=
==============

After playing at least one game, you can check your MyPlayer stats here for
the latest updates on all of your different statistics.

===============
=Edit MyPlayer=
===============

If you don’t like the customized player you made at the beginning of the game,
you can edit their appearance here. The player creation system is quite
comprehensive. These are all the different aspects of the player that can be
edited and customized:

Skin Tone
Muscle Tone
Eye Color
Hair Style
Hair Length
Hair Color
Beard Style
Moustache
Goatee
Eyebrow
Facial Hair Color
Face Type
Head Type
Head Package

You can also start a brand new player from scratch if you’d like, make more
detailed customizations of the players head, randomize their head, reset the
head to default settings, and add tattoos.

At the bottom of the MyPlayer menu you will see an option to edit your
MyPlayer account. From here you can edit the information that you gave the
game at the start.

3. MyCareer
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
MyCareer is the dominant game mode in NBA 2K13.

==============
=The Creation=
==============

The creation process is not over when you’re done tinkering with MyPlayer. On
the contrary, MyCareer thrusts you right back into the creation process. Now
you have to edit other aspects of your player.

—>VITALS<—
These are important, so pay attention. You can change the nickname of your
player, their birthday, and whatever else, but there are also more important
aspects about your player that need to be customized from this section.

For one, you will have to choose what position your player will play as in the
game. Choosing different positions will alter their height automatically based
on the average height for real life players playing that position in the
actual NBA.

The positions you can choose from are as follows:

Point Guard
Shooting Guard
Small Forward
Power Forward
Center

The default option is to choose Point Guard.

From there, you can also choose the play style of your created player. Your
options for this category are as follows:

All-Around
Pass First
Scoring
Defensive
3pt Specialist
Athletic

All-Around is the default option. What it does is essentially make it so your
player can be active in all the different aspects of the game. The other
categories are self-explanatory. Choosing a Defensive player will mean that
your player will focus more on playing defense in the game. Four sets of
play types can later be chosen further down the menu, as well as more
cosmetic features, and the dominant hand of your created player.

—>BODY AND HEAD<—
More cosmetic customization is to be had under this category. From here, you
can choose the height and weight of your character.

—>ATTRIBUTES<—
Your choices under “Vitals” can be seen here in statistical form. The highest
Overall score you can gain for your player at the start of the game is by
sticking with the default settings of choosing a “Point Guard” player with an
“All Around” Play Style. Their Overall will be 65 if you choose this set-up.
Other set-ups will result in lower Overalls, but higher stats in more specific
and focused areas. Conveniently, you can edit your Play Style and Position from
this menu as well.

—>SIGNATURE<—
These are various animations that can be chosen for the actions of your player
on the court.

When you are done editing your player, press start. Create a new save, and
then get ready for the rest of your career!

=====================
=The Rookie Showcase=
=====================

When your player is all made up and ready to go, your first game will be the
Rookie Showcase. The teams are the Stars and the Elites. This first game is
huge in that it determines what NBA teams will be interested in you, and your
position in the draft.

You start this game at a grade of C. You are graded based on your performances
and how well you work with your team. Pass the ball a lot and let your team
run with it to help improve your grade. Don’t be a ball hog, and be careful of
getting too many fouls.

Fouls can happen easy, and in this game, it can really break you. Getting too
many fouls will require you to sit out for an extended period of time, and by
the time you rejoin the game, the other team will most likely be in the lead,
and your grade will take a huge hit. This also limits the amount of time you
have to try to build your grade back up.

Take the shots that you can get. A two-pointer is a hell of a lot better than
not scoring at all, and the other team will be fairly consistently scoring as
well because they are equally matched to you. Whenever you steal the ball back,
take this as an opportunity to score a nice two-pointer. Don’t waste it by
going for a three and surrendering the ball back to them. It’s these moments
that will help you get ahead in the game.

======================
=Pre-Draft Interviews=
======================

When the Rookie Showcase has concluded, win or lose, you’ll be assigned a grade
and next up you’ll have a series of interviews for teams that are interested in
drafting you as a player. Go through the conversation options. You can choose
to be nice or be a jerk. The way you present yourself in these interviews will
affect the draft.

===========
=NBA Draft=
===========

Watch the draft. You’ll find out what team has drafted you.

======================
=Contract Negotations=
======================

During your Rookie Year, you will not be given the choice of negotiating your
contract. In subsequent years, when your contract is up, you can choose to
pursue other teams and sign a new contract. Negotiations can then be done to
try to get a better deal on your contract.

==========
=Play Now=
==========

Once you’ve been drafted to a team, you now have a chance to start playing
some basketball games! You can choose the “Play Next Game” to jump into a game
immediately, or “Play Next Key Game” to play the next major game.

==================
=Signature Skills=
==================

Skills can be unlocked and assigned to your created player by going through
MyCareer mode. Obviously, you will want to choose skills that cater to your
play style. The skills are separated into three categories of “Offensive”,
“Defensive”, and “Other”.

—>Offensive<—

Highlight Film
Finisher
Acrobat
Spot Up Shooter
Shot Creator
Deadeye

—>Defensive<—

Defensive Anchor

—>Other<—

========
=Drills=
========

These mini-games will be based on your player’s position. They are designed to
help you play your position a bit better. There are a limited number of drills
to play each week. Playing the drills are beneficial for your own skills as
well as your created player’s abilities.

========================
=Legends Training Camps=
========================

Various NBA legends are on hand to train you and help you improve your skills
on the court. Of course, they only work for a price. VC must be spent to
purchase the talents of the NBA legends. You can go through two training camp
sessions per season. Completing these Training Camps will boost your
Attributes. The following Legends are available for Training Camp purposes:

Bill Russell
Larry Bird
Magic Johnson
Michael Jordon
Jerry West
Hakeem Olajuwon
John Stockton
Dennis Rodman
Isiah Thomas

=============
=Shootaround=
=============

Free shooting. Just run around and shoot the balls. The goal here is to improve
your shots, obviously.

===========
=Scrimmage=
===========

Games against your own team for practice.

========
=Player=
========

—>Upgrades<—
Using VC, you can purchase new Signature Skills, Animations, and Attributes.
This is how you can improve your Player’s performances.

—>Social Media<—
You’ll find a fictional version of Twitter here, but that’s not all there is to
this section. Social media is how to build your fanbase, which is also done by
spending VC. You can check to see which notable fans out there are yours as
well to sort of gauge your progress. Obviously the more fans you have, the
fatter your contracts will be every time that you’re up for a resigning.

—>My Shoes<—
Another way to boost the stats of your players is to equip certain shoes on
them. You have to sign with a sponsor before you’re able to use their brand of
shoes, but 2K branded shoes are available to you from the start of the game.

The following brands are available in the game:

Nike
Jordan
Adidas
Converse
Reebok
Under Armour
Spalding
2K Brand

All of the 2K Brand shoes are equippable from the outset of the game.

—>Player Card<—
All there is to know about your created player can be found on their Player
Card. Height, weight, age, personality, years they’ve been pro, their overall
rank, where they’re from, their status, their stats, award history, and much
more. If you are a guy that likes to crunch the numbers, visit the Player Card
often.

========
=Career=
========

—>Meet With GM<—
Have a complaint about the coach? Don’t like a particular player on the team?
You can get them in hot water by arranging a meeting with the GM. You can sit
down with the GM at any time by going to the main menu.

—>My Endorsements<—
Endorsements are earned basically by playing well. Endorsements are a gauge of
your popularity. They can appear in a variety of forms. The earliest
endorsement you’ll get is a nifty billboard. You can view your endorsements
from here. You’ll notice a positive correlation between your overall popularity
(i.e., the amount of fans) with your endorsements.

—>Career Milestones<—
These are mini-challenges that can be completed to earn extra VC.

—>Career Timeline<—
If you want to reminisce about the early days of your NBA career, then you can
cycle through the timeline.

—>Hall of Fame Progress<—
Complete the following tasks to get into the NBA Hall of Fame. You only have to
complete 10 of the challenges to make your way into the Hall of Fame, which is
the ultimate goal of the game.

Score 10,000 career points
Record 2,500 career assists
Record 1,000 career steals
Get selected to 5 All-Star Teams
Win the MVP award
Win an NBA Title
Make the Playoffs 4 times
Make the Conference Finals 2 times
Win Scoring Title (must qualify for League Leaders)
Lead league in Assists at end of season (must qualify for League Leaders)
Finish season in Top 10 for Scoring, Assists, and Steals
Get 50 A+ Teammate Grades
Break a Single Season Record (Pts, Reb, Ast, Stl, Blk, 3PT)
Record 250 career double-doubles
Record 25 career triple-doubles

Very conveniently, there are counters next to the goals that require a certain
amount of tasks to be completed so you can keep track of your progress for
each individual goal.

—>Retire<—
When you’re ready to retire your created player, then choose this option from
the menu. This can be done at any time. Then you can create a new player and
start a new career.

go.

======
=Team=
======

In MyCareer, you will be playing as your “MyPlayer” created player, true, but
your team is important, too. While you won’t be controlling any of them
directly, working together with your team is paramount in performing well in
games.

—>Schedule<—
Find out what your list of upcoming games looks like.

—>Roster<—
Want to know the top players on your team? Then this is the place to go. You
can also find out which players will replace the top stars if they need
replacing in games.

4. MyTeam
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -

—>Collection<—
All the items you own are here. Players, coaches, playbooks, arenas, and
uniforms that you own for your team can all be found here. You can sell items
from here if you’d like.

—>MyTeam<—
Actual management of your team is handled under the “MyTeam” tab. To start a
MyTeam career, you need to have at least 12 players. The booster pack that you
are given at the start of MyTeam will have all the items you need. Go here and
activate all the players that you were given. Then cycle over using the
triggers.

Now you need to add an arena, a playbook, two different uniforms, and a coach
to your team. Make the proper assignments.

If you’d like to add more items to your “MyTeam”, then you need to go to the
Market and buy them using VC. VC is earned in a variety of ways, but you can
also sell the items given to you with the booster pack to purchase new items.
Keep in mind that if you do this without enough VC to purchase new items, then
you won’t be able to play MyTeam until you build up enough VC.

—>Road to the Playoffs<—
When your team is ready, you can start the Road to the Playoffs. This is an
online-based mode in which you are paired up with players of similar skill
levels. Winning three games places you in the 8th seed. After 12 games are
played online, your final seed will be determined and then you will be given a
prize based on what seed you finished the game in.

—>Exhibition Games<—
If you want to practice, you can play against the AI to brush up on your skills
before jumping into Road to the Playoffs. There are three different difficulty
levels available.

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
5. Game Modes
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
If you want a straight NBA 2K experience without all the huff and fluff of the
new version, this is where you’ll want to be.

—>The Association/Season<—
These modes let you play a straight season of NBA. You can choose when you
start the season as well as a variety of other options. In The Association
mode, you have a lot more customization options available to your season,
whereas season mode will just get you right into the games.

—>Playoffs<—
A quick-jump to the playoffs. If you lose, you’re out!

—>Practice<—
Practice actually entails a lot of different modes and features to help you
become better at the game. Training Camps are available to help you practice
all the different moves in the game. It keeps track of how many different
times you performed each action, and you can complete the Training Camp by
completing all the different moves a certain number of times.

—>NBA: Creating A Legend<—
After choosing an existing player on an NBA team, you then play through the
seasons controlling only them. This is like the MyCareer mode, except without
all the interviews and press conferences and all of that jazz tacked on as
well.

–>NBA Blacktop<—
Exactly what it sounds like, NBA Blacktop allows you to take the professional
players of the NBA and take the to the blacktop. You have to purchase each
player individually using VC.

The possible matches are as follows:

1v1
2v2
3v3
4v4
5v5

The matches with less players will be played with half court rules. Half court
rules means that three-pointers are  two pointers instead, and two pointers
now 1 pointers. Every time position of the ballc hanges, you have to run
beyond the three-point line to make it official.

online matches so that you can get used to the slight lag in the player
movements.

shoes here that can be equipped to your MyPlayer. You can listen to Jay Z
music under the “2K Beats” option, and edit the music that plays in the
arenas. You can see creations other players have uploaded to the 2K Sports
servers, and also upload your own creations.

The game’s credits can be viewed here. Plus, cheat codes can be inputted in
this section. For a full listing of cheat codes in the game, please refer to
the “Unlockables” section of the guide.

In reality, there’s a metric ton of content to unlock in NBA 2K13. To post all
the items available to purchase and their VC price would be a truly ridiculous
task. Instead, this section will be reserved for achievements, items that are
unlocked by completing in-game actions, and for cheat codes and other secrets
in the game.

10. Hints and Tips
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
To cap off this guide, I will leave you with a few tips and tricks to the
NBA2K13 trade. Now, I fully acknowledge that there are far more talented
gamers out there in regards to NBA 2K13. If you want to submit your own tips
and hints, then please shoot me an e-mail. You can find my e-mail at the top of
the guide!

SHOOTING – There are a few things you need to keep in mind when shooting in
NBA 2K13. Pay attention to the bottom of your player’s reticule. When there are
more yellow slots filled, that means that the shot is better. Your position on
the court will affect this meter. The blocking of your opponent will also
lower this meter. Just because a meter is low doesn’t mean you will miss a
shot, however.

At the top of a shot, watch the player’s hands. Hold LT and flick the right
analog stick up to start the shot. At the top of the shot, as soon as the
ball is about to leave the player’s hands, release LT and the right analog
stick at the same time for a good shot.

SCORING AND STAYING AHEAD – When playing games, it’s unwise to constantly go
for threes. Even the best players won’t be able to score three’s constantly,
and missing a three will often result in your opponents rebounding the ball.
When you post on the board and start getting ahead, it’s best to try to
maintain that lead by going for two’s.

STEALING – Reach-in fouls can happen a lot if you constantly try to knock the
ball from your opponent’s hands. The best way to steal the ball is wait for
the other player to try to pass, and then throw yourself in front of the ball.

PURPOSEFUL FOULS – Sometimes it can be advantageous to foul your opponent. If
you notice an opponent constanly going for lay-ups, then foul them to stop
them from scoring the 2. This will initiate two free shots, in which they have
a chance to gain those two points, but there’s a chance they will miss a
basket or two, so in the end, they wind up with less points than they would
have otherwise gotten.

PASS THE BALL – This is especially paramount in MyCareer. Passing the ball
encourages teamwork and will build up your grade for that game. If you are a
ball hog, your grade will lower. Not to mention that a player stuck with the
ball the entire time will be fatigued when they go to make a shot.

KNOW YOUR ROLE – The game conveniently provides a means of showing you what
your role is. An arrow around your player’s reticule will point them to the
player on the opposite team that they are supposed to be guarding/blocking.
When you are on offense, it will tell you the player that is supposed to be
guarding/blocking you, so that you can avoid them and plan your shots and
passes accordingly.
